| 1 | Hepatocellular carcinoma: Review of disease and tumor biomarkers显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is a common malignancy and now the second commonest global cause of cancer death. HCC tumorigenesis is relatively silent and patients experience late symptomatic presentation. As the option for curative treatments is limited to early stage cancers, diagnosis in non-symptomatic individuals is crucial. International guidelines advise regular surveillance of high-risk populations but the current tools lack sufficient sensitivity for early stage tumors on the background of a cirrhotic nodular liver. A number of novel biomarkers have now been suggested in the literature, which may reinforce the current surveillance methods. In addition, recent metabonomic and proteomic discoveries have established specific metabolite expressions in HCC, according to Warburg's phenomenon of altered energy metabolism. | 3 | Removal of primary iron rich phase from aluminum-silicon melt by centrifugal separation显示文摘Recycling is a major consideration in continued aluminum use due to the enormous demand for high quality products. Some impurity elements gradually accumulate through the repetitive reuse of aluminum alloy scrap. Of them, the iron content should be suppressed under the allowed limit. In the present research, a novel separation method was introduced to remove primary iron-rich intermetallic compounds by centrifugation during solidification of Al-Si-Fe alloys. This method does not use the density difference between two phases as in other centrifugal methods, but uses the order of solidification in Al-Si-Fe alloys, because iron promotes the formation of intermetallic compounds with other alloying elements as a primary phase. Two Al-Si-Fe alloys which have different iron contents were chosen as the starting materials. The iron-rich phase could be efficiently removed by centrifuging under a centrifugal force of 40 g. Coarse intermetallic compounds were found in the sample inside the crucible, while rather fine intermetallic compounds were found in the sample outside the crucible. Primary intermetallic compounds were linked to each other via aluminum-rich matrix, and formed like a network. The highest iron removal fraction is 67% and the lowest one is 7% for Al-12Si-1.7Fe alloy. | 4 | Dynamic recrystallization behavior and microstructural evolution of Mg alloy AZ31 through high-speed rolling显示文摘High-speed rolling(HSR) is known to improve the workability of Mg alloys significantly, which makes it possible to impose a large reduction in a single pass without fracture. In the present study, dynamic recrystallization(DRX) behavior and microstructural and textural variations of Mg alloy AZ31 during a HSR process were investigated by conducting rolling with different imposed reductions in the range of 20%–80% at a high rolling speed of 470 m/min and 400?C. High-strain-rate deformation during HSR suppresses dislocation slips but promotes twinning, which results in the formation of numerous twins of several types, i.e., {10–12} extension twins, {10–11} and {10–13} contraction twins,and {10–11}–{10–12} double twins. After twinning, high strain energy is accumulated in twin bands because their crystallographic orientations are favorable for basal slips, leading to subsequent DRX at the twin bands. Accordingly, twinning activation and twinning-induced DRX behavior play crucial roles in accommodating plastic deformation during HSR and in varying microstructure and texture of the highspeed-rolled(HSRed) sheets. Area fraction of fine DRXed grains formed at the twin bands increases with increasing rolling reduction, which is attributed to the combined effects of increased strain, strain rate,and deformation temperature and a decreased critical strain for DRX. Size, internal strain, and texture intensity of the DRXed grains are smaller than those of unDRXed grains. | 6 | Accelerated precipitation behavior of cast Mg-Al-Zn alloy by grain refinement显示文摘This study demonstrates that the precipitation behavior of ?-Mg17 Al12 phase during aging and the resultant variation in hardness and mechanical properties of cast Mg-Al-Zn alloy are strongly dependent on initial grain size. Grain size reduction accelerates discontinuous precipitation at the early stage of aging treatment by increasing the area fraction of grain boundaries that can act as nucleation sites for discontinuous precipitates(DP), but it does not influence DP growth rate. Grain refinement also prematurely terminates continuous precipitation because the formation of a large number of DP reduces the amount of Al dissolved in the matrix, which is required for the formation of continuous precipitates(CP). This promotion of DP formation and early termination of CP formation significantly decrease the peak-aging time to one-third. The enhanced precipitation behavior also leads to an additional hardness improvement in the aged alloy, along with an increase in hardness owing to grain boundary strengthening by grain refinement. The amount of increase in hardness changes with aging time, which is determined by the variation of three variables with aging time: DP fraction difference between refined and nonrefined alloys, hardness difference between DP and matrix, and matrix hardness difference between the two alloys. Grain refinement improves both tensile strength and ductility of the homogenized alloy owing to grain boundary strengthening and suppression of twinning activation, respectively. | 8 | Garcinia Cambogia attenuates diet-induced adiposity but exacerbates hepatic collagen accumulation and inflammation显示文摘AIM: To investigate long-term effects of Garcinia Cambogia (GC), weight-loss supplement, on adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese mice. METHODS: Obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD, 45 kcal% fat) with or without GC (1%, w/w) for 16 wk. The HFD contained 45 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 35 kcal% carbohydrate. They were given free access to food and distilled water, and food consumption and body weight were measured daily and weekly, respectively. Data were expressed as the mean ± SE. Statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package for the social science software program. Student's t test was used to assess the differences between the groups. Statistical significance was considered at P < 0.05. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in body weight and food intake between the groups. However, the supplementation of GC significantly lowered visceral fat accumulation and adipocyte size via inhibition of fatty acid synthase activity and its mRNA expression in visceral adipose tissue, along with enhanced enzymatic activity and gene expression involved in adipose fatty acid β-oxidation. Moreover, GC supplementation resulted in significant reductions in glucose intolerance and the plasma resistin level in the HFD-fed mice. However, we first demonstrated that it increased hepatic collagen accumulation, lipid peroxidation and mRNA levels of genes related to oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) and inflammatory responses (tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) as well as plasma alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase levels, although HFD-induced hepatic steatosis was not altered. | 9 | Microstructural evolution and grain growth mechanism of pre-twinned magnesium alloy during annealing显示文摘The microstructural evolution and underlying grain growth mechanism of a{1012}-twin-containing Mg alloy during annealing are investigated through quasi in situ electron backscatter diffraction measurements of a rolled AZ31 alloy subjected to precompression along the rolling direction(RD).The precompressed material shows a partially twinned structure consisting of a twinned region and a residual matrix region,and this structure changes to an almost twin-free structure consisting of grown grains with serrated grain boundaries in twinand matrix-originated regions after annealing at 250℃ for 1 h.In addition,the average grain size almost doubles and the internal strain energy decreases significantly after annealing.These microstructural variations are induced mainly by grain growth through the strain-induced migration of high-angle grain boundaries without the movement of twin boundaries.The twinned region of the precompressed material has higher stored strain energy than the residual matrix region because the crystallographic orientation of the former region is favorable for basal slip and because of the occurrence of the dislocation transmutation reaction in the twins.For reducing the total strain energy accumulated in the precompressed material,the residual matrix region—having lower stored strain energy—preferentially grows while consuming the twinned regions formed in the surrounding grains during annealing.As a result,the area fraction of grains with a matrix texture increases whereas that of grains with a twin texture decreases after annealing.The twin texture intensity increases significantly and this texture becomes more concentrated along the RD because the highly RD oriented twins tend to grow during annealing on account of their fairly low stored strain energy. | Ye Jin Kim Jong Un Lee Young Min Kim Sung Hyuk Par | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,4: | 3 |

| 11 | Two-dimensional Dirac plasmon-polaritons in graphene,3D topological insulator and hybrid systems显示文摘Collective oscillations of massless particles in two-dimensional(2D)Dirac materials offer an innovative route toward implementing atomically thin devices based on low-energy quasiparticle interactions.Strong confinement of nearfield distribution on the 2D surface is essential to demonstrate extraordinary optoelectronic functions,providing means to shape the spectral response at the mid-infrared(IR)wavelength.Although the dynamic polarization from the linear response theory has successfully accounted for a range of experimental observations,a unified perspective was stll elusive,connecting the state-of-the-art developments based on the 2D Dirac plasmon-polaritons.Here,we review recent works on graphene and three-dimensional(3D)topological insulator(TI)plasmon-polariton,where the mid-IR and terahertz(THz)radiation experiences prominent confinement into a deep-subwavelength scale in a novel optoelectronic structure.After presenting general light-matter interactions between 2D Dirac plasmon and subwavelength quasiparticle excitations,we introduce various experimental techniques to couple the plasmonpolaritons with electromagnetic radiations.Electrical and optical controls over the plasmonic excitations reveal the hybridized plasmon modes in graphene and 3D Tl,demonstrating an intense near-field interaction of 2D Dirac plasmon within the highly-compressed volume.These findings can further be applied to invent optoelectronic biomolecular sensors,atomically thin photodetectors,and laser-driven light sources. | Chihun In Un Jeong Kim Hyunyong Choi | 2022 | Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,11: | 2 |
| 12 | GnRH impairs diabetic wound healing through enhanced NETosis显示文摘It has been reported that neutrophil extracellular traps(NETs)impair wound healing in diabetes and that inhibiting NET generation(NETosis)improves wound healing in diabetic mice.Gonadotropin-releasing hormone(GnRH)agonists are associated with a greater risk of diabetes.However,the role of GnRH in diabetic wound healing is unclear.We determined whether GnRH-promoted NETosis and induced more severe and delayed diabetic wound healing.A mouse model of diabetes was established using five injections with streptozotocin.Mice with blood glucose levels>250 mg/dL were then used in the experiments.GnRH agonist treatment induced delayed wound healing and increased NETosis at the skin wounds of diabetic mice.In contrast,GnRH antagonist treatment inhibited GnRH agonist-induced delayed wound healing.The expression of NETosis markers PAD4 and citrullinated histone H3 were increased in the GnRH-treated diabetic skin wounds in diabetic mice and patients.In vitro experiments also showed that neutrophils expressed a GnRH receptor and that GnRH agonist treatment increased NETosis markers and promoted phorbol myristate acetate(PMA)-induced NETosis in mouse and human neutrophils.Furthermore,GnRH antagonist treatment suppressed the expression of NETosis markers and PMA-induced NETosis,which were increased by GnRH treatment.These results indicated that GnRH-promoted NETosis and that increased NETosis induced delayed wound healing in diabetic skin wounds.Thus,inhibition of GnRH might be a novel treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. | Yun Sang Lee Sung Un Kang Myung-Hoon Lee Haeng-Jun Kim Chang-Hak Han Ho-Ryun Won Young Uk Park Chul-Ho Kim | 2020 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2020,17,8: | 2 |

| 14 | Numerical modeling of sedimentation control scenarios in the approach channel of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage,South Korea显示文摘The effects of sedimentation reduction at the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage(NREB) in Korea were quantitatively analyzed with respect to different sediment control methods using the calibrated and validated two-dimensional model.The countermeasures of sediment dredging,sediment flushing,channel geometry change,and a combination of flushing and channel geometry change were examined for the approach channel of the NREB.The flood event and channel geometries of the 3.8 km section upstream of the NREB surveyed before and after dredging in 2007 were used for modeling conditions.As a result,the half of sediments dredged in 2007 could be eliminated naturally by floods without dredging.The numerical simulation of sediment flushing indicated that the deposition height decreased in the entire simulation section with the minimum and maximum reductions from 0.3 in to1.3 m in deposition height.The channel contraction method produced quantitatively the largest amount of sedimentation reduction and sediment flushing and dredging followed.Sedimentation reduction by a combination of flushing and channel contraction was up 10%compared to the individual method of channel contraction. | Un Ji Eun-Kyung Jang Gwonhan Kim | 2016 | International Journal of Sediment Research2016,31,3: | 2 |

| 17 | Effect of composite yogurt enriched with acacia fiber and Bifidobacterium lactis显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether composite yogurt with acacia dietary fiber and Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) has additive effects in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: A total of 130 patients were randomly allocated to consume, twice daily for 8 wk, either the composite yogurt or the control product. The composite yogurt contained acacia dietary fiber and high-dose B. lactis together with two classic yogurt starter cultures. Patients were evaluated using the visual analogscale via a structured questionnaire administered at baseline and after treatment. RESULTS: Improvements in bowel habit satisfaction and overall IBS symptoms from baseline were significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (27.16 vs 15.51, P = 0.010, 64.2 ± 17.0 vs 50.4 ± 20.5, P < 0.001; respectively). In constipation-predominant IBS, improvement in overall IBS symptoms was significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (72.4 ± 18.4 vs 50.0 ± 21.8, P < 0.001). In patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS, improvement in bowel habit satisfaction from baseline was significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (32.90 vs 7.81, P = 0.006).
