1Use of albendazole sulfoxide, albendazole sulfone, and combined solutions as scolicidal agents on hydatid cysts (in vitro study)显示文摘AIM: To establish which scolicidal agents are superiorand more suitable for regular use.METHODS: Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleceswere obtained from 25 patients with liver hydatidcysts. Various concentrations of albendazole sulfone,albendazole sulfoxide, and albendazole sulfone andalbendazole sulfoxide mixed together in concentrationsof 50 μg/mL, and H2O2 in a concentration of 4%, NaCl20%, and 1.5% cetrimide-0.15% chlorhexidine (10%Savlon-Turkey) were used to determine the scolicidaleffects. Albendazole (ABZ) derivatives and otherscolicidal agents were applied to a minimum of 100scoleces for 5 and 10 min. The degree of viability wascalculated according to the number of living scolicesper fi eld from a total of 100 scolices observed underthe microscope.RESULTS: After 5 min, ABZ sulfone was 97.3%effective, ABZ sulfoxide was 98.4% effective, and thecombined solution was 98.6% effective. When sulfone,sulfoxide and the combined solutions were compared,the combined solution seemed more effective thansulfone. However, there was no difference when thecombined solution was compared with sulfoxide. After10 min, hypertonic salt water, sulfone, sulfoxide, andthe combined solution compared to other solutionslooked more effective and this was statisticallysignificant on an advanced level. When sulfone,sulfoxide, and the combined solutions were compared with each other, the combined solution appeared more effective than sulfone. When the combined solution was compared with sulfoxide, there was no difference.CONCLUSION: Despite being active, ABZ metabolites did not provide a marked advantage over 20% hypertonic saline. 2Comparison of corneal endothelial changes following phacoemulsification with transversal and torsional phacoemulsification machines显示文摘AIM:To compare and evaluate the phacoemulsification parameters and postoperative endothelial cell changes of two different phacoemulsification machines, each with different modes, but also to assess the relationship between postoperative endothelial cell loss and the phacoemulsification parameters, as well as the other factors in both groups.METHODS:This prospective observational study was comprised of consecutive eligible cataract patients operated with phacoemulsification technique performed by the same surgeon using either a WHITESTAR Signature Ellips FX(transversal, group 1) or Infiniti OZil IP(torsional, group 2) machine.RESULTS:The study included 86 patients. Baseline characteristics in the groups were similar. The median nuclear sclerosis grade was 3(2-4) in the first group and2(2-4) in the second group(P =0.265). Both groups had similar phacoemulsification needle times(group 1: 60.63±36 s; group 2: 55.98±30 s; P =0.789). The percentage of endothelial cell loss 30 d after surgery ranged from 3% to15% with a median of 7% in group 1, and from 2% to13% with a median of 6% in group 2; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups(P =0.407). Hexagonality(P =0.794) and the coefficient of variation(CV; P =0.142) did not differ significantly between the groups before and 30 d after surgery. Asignificant positive correlation was found between the endothelial cell loss and nuclear sclerosis grade(group1: P <0.001; group 2: P <0.001) and between the endothelial cell loss and average phacoemulsification power(group 1: P =0.007; group 2: P =0.008).CONCLUSION:Both of these machines were efficient,with similar endothelial cell loss. 3Effects of glutamine and curcumin on bacterial translocation in jaundiced rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of curcumin on bacterial translocation and oxidative damage in an obstructive jaundice model and compare the results to glutamine, an agent known to be effective and clinically used. METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar-Albino rats, weighing 200-250 g, were randomly divided into three groups (8 in each group). After ligation of the common bile duct in all animals, GroupⅠ received oral normal saline, Group Ⅱ received oral glutamine and Group Ⅲ received oral curcumin for seven days. Blood samples via cardiac puncture, tissue samples (terminal ileum, liver and mesenteric lymph node) and peritoneal fluid were obtained from the animals at the time of death to investigate bacterial translocation and oxidative damage. RESULTS: We observed that both glutamine and curcumin reduced bacterial translocation in blood, hepatocellular damage, plasma cytokine levels, oxidative tissue damage and apoptosis significantly compared to the control group. Additionally, glutamine showed protective effects on ileal epithelium and reduced villus atrophy. 4Development of ecoregion-based merchantable volume systems for Pinus brutia Ten. and Pinus nigra Arnold. in southern Turkey显示文摘Estimating individual tree volume is one of the essential building blocks in forest growth and yield models.Ecologically based taper equations provide accurate volume predictions and allow classification by merchantable sizes, assisting in sustainable forest management.In the present study, ecoregion-based compatible volume systems for brutian pine and black pine in the three ecoregions of southern Turkey were developed. Several well-known taper functions were evaluated. A secondorder continuous-time autoregressive error structure was used to correct the inherent autocorrelation in the hierarchical data, allowing the model to be applied to irregularly spaced and unbalanced data. The compatible segmented model of Fang et al.(For Sci 46:1–12, 2000) best described the experimental data. It is therefore recommended for estimating diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for the three ecoregions and two species analyzed. The nonlinearextra sum of squares method indicated differences in ecoregion and tree-specific taper functions. A different taper function should therefore be used for each pine species and ecoregion in southern Turkey. 5Improving mechanical and antibacterial properties of PMMA via polyblend electrospinning with silk fibroin and polyethyleneimine towards dental applications显示文摘Poly(methylmethacrylate)(PMMA)is a widely used material in dental applications,particularly as denture resins.Due to thermally unstable and wet oral cavity,the implanted PMMA based resins occasionally deform and grow bacterial biofilms at the interface between oral cavity and the biomaterial.Several strategies attempted earlier to improve the bacterial resistance and mechanical performance of PMMA.Poly(ethyleneimine)(PEI)is a hyperbranched cationic polymer shown earlier to improve antibacterial activity of resins but do not improve mechanical properties of the resins alone,while silk fibroin(SF)is a natural biopolymer with unique material properties.In this study,we combined SF and PEI towards development of antibacterial and mechanically superior PMMA based materials towards overcoming its drawbacks.Using polyblend electrospinning to combine SF,PEI and PMMA,we successfully developed intrinsically antibacterial and mechanically reinforced nanofiber mats.We propose that the resulting nanofiber mats have the potential to be incorporated into PMMA based denture resin materials to overcome the problems of patients and improve their quality of life.Ugur Yunus Karatepe Tugba Ozdemir 2020Bioactive Materials2020,5,3:3
