1Long-term success of ahmed glaucoma valve in refractory glaucoma显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the long-term results and complications of ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation in refractory glaucoma.· METHODS:A retrospective review of 13 patients (13 eyes) with refractory glaucoma who underwent AGV implantation and had a minimum follow-up of 18 months was performed.All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement before surgery and at 1 month,3 months,6 months,1 year after surgery and yearly afterwards.Complications and the number of antiglaucoma medications needed were recorded.· RESULTS:Mean age was 27.3±16.0 years.All eyes (100%) had at least one prior incisional surgery.Mean follow-up was 61.3±30.8 months.IOP was reduced from a mean of 35.0±7.0mmHg to 18.2±7.9mmHg at 12 months and to 17.0±4.1mmHg at 96 months (P <0.05) with a lower number of medications from baseline,76.9% patients required additional procedures to achieve the success criteria set by previously published series.The most common complications were encapculated cyst formation in eight eyes (61.5%) and tube exposure in four eyes (30.8%).· CONCLUSION:Encapsulated cyst formation was the most common complication which hindered succesful IOP control after AGV implant insertion for refractory glaucoma.Despite cyst excision with anti-fibrotic agents,successful IOP reduction was not achieved in 76.9% of the patients without antiglaucoma medication.Mahmut Kaya Zeynep Ozbek Aylin Yaman Ismet Durak 2012International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2012,5,1:15
2Numerical and analytical simulation of the structural behaviour of fully grouted cable bolts under impulsive loading显示文摘Designing reliable yielding support system to mitigate the effect of the kinetic energy in burst-prone conditions in mining and tunneling excavations is one of the challenges for geotechnical engineers. A combination of the support elements can be used to increase rock strength and minimise the displacement of unstable rock mass. It is important to understand how the support system works to ensure the stability of underground excavations. Cable bolts have been commonly used as an effective underground support system and an element of reinforcement to improve rock stability. Cable bolts are usually considered to be subjected to static loads under relatively low stress environments, however, in burst-prone conditions, they might be subjected to dynamic loads. Cable bolts as well as other support elements are used in burst-prone conditions to absorb the kinetic energy of the removed rock to avoid sudden and violent failures. This paper develops numerical and a novel analytical simulation technique for cable bolts to assess their structural behaviour under static and dynamic loading conditions. 3Assessment of energy release mechanisms contributing to coal burst显示文摘Coal burst is a dynamic release of energy within the rock(or coal) mass leading to high velocity expulsion of the broken/failed material into mine openings. This phenomenon has been recognised as one of the most catastrophic failures associated with the coal mining industry, which can often lead to injuries and fatalities of miners as well as significant production losses. This paper aims to examine the mechanisms contributing to coal burst occurrence, with an emphasis on the energy release concept. In this study, a numerical modelling study has been conducted to evaluate the roles and contributions of difference energy components. 4Methods applied in Australian industry to evaluate coal mine slope stability显示文摘Strata failure is a principal hazard in open cut coal mining as it has the potential to cause multiple fatalities.Prior to the excavation of any slope,a geotechnical assessment should review the likely slope performance,including the risk of slope failure.Controls to manage this risk to an acceptable level should accompany the geotechnical analysis.A survey of 43 practising geotechnical engineers indicated that kinematic and 2D limit equilibrium analyses were the methods most commonly applied to analyse excavated slope stability.While these methods are well established and widely applied in the broad rock engineering disciplines(e.g.civil,hard rock),a recent review of over 60 slope failures suggests these methods have limited suitability for modelling the complex failure mechanisms observed in excavated coal mine slopes.Kinematic techniques do not adequately capture the rock mass component of excavated slope failure and do not provide a geospatial location of potential failure,while 2D limit equilibrium techniques do not adequately capture the 3D mechanisms of excavated slope failures.Methods which do consider the 3D mechanisms of slope failure are summarized for industry consideration and application.Alison McQuillan Ismet Canbulat Joung Oh 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,2:4
5Fundamentals of modern ground control management in Australian underground coal mines显示文摘Underground coal mining is inherently hazardous,with uncontrolled ground failure regarded as one of only several critical risks for multiple fatality events.Development,implementation and management of overarching systems and procedures for maintaining strata control is an important step to mitigating the impact of ground failure hazards at a mine site operational level.This paper summarised the typical pro-active ground control management system(PGCMS)implemented in various Australian underground coal mines.Australia produces approximately 100 million tonnes a year of metallurgical and thermal coal from approximately 30 of the world’s safest longwall mines operating in New South Wales and Queensland.The increased longwall productivity required to achieve both high levels of safety and profitability,places significant emphasis on the reliability of pro-active ground control management for longwall mining operations.Increased depths,adverse geological conditions,elevated variable stress regimes and weaker ground conditions,coupled with an industry wide need for increased development rates continue to make ground control management challenging.Ground control management is not only about ground support and pillar design though but also a structured process that requires a coordinated effort from all levels of the workforce to both minimise the occurrence of adverse geotechnical events and mitigate the potential risks when they do occur.The PGCMS presented in this paper is proven to provide both a safer and more productive mine environment through minimisation of unplanned delays.The critical elements of the method are presented in detail and demonstrate the utility and value of a ground control management system that has potential for implementation in underground coal mining globally.Jason Emery Ismet Canbulat Chengguo Zhang 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,5:4
6New risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes显示文摘This paper presents a new risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes. This new empirical-statistical slope stability assessment methodology(SSAM) is intended for use by geotechnical engineers at both the design review and operational stages of a mine's life to categorise the risk of an excavated coal mine slope. A likelihood of failure is determined using a new slope stability classification system for excavated coal mine slopes developed using a database of 119 intact and failed case studies sourced from open cut coal mines in Australia. Consequence of failure is based on slope height and stand-off distance at the toe of the excavated slope. Results are presented in a new risk matrix, with slope risk being divided into low, medium and high categories. The SSAM is put forward as a new risk assessment methodology to assess the potential for, and consequence of, excavated coal mine slope failure.Unlike existing classification systems, assumptions about the likely failure mode or mechanism are not required. Instead, the SSAM applies an approach which compares the conditions present within the excavated slope face, with the known past performance of slopes with similar geotechnical and geometrical conditions, to estimate the slope's propensity for failure. The SSAM is novel in that it considers the depositional history of strata in an excavated slope and how this sequence affects slope stability. It is further novel in that it does not require explicit measurements of intact rock, rock mass and/or defect strength to rapidly calculate a slope's likelihood of failure and overall risk. Ratings can be determined entirely from visual observations of the excavated slope face. 7A semi-quantitative coal burst risk classification system显示文摘Safety is the highest priority in the mining industry as underground mining in particular poses high safety risks to its workers. In underground coal mines, coal bursts are one of the most catastrophic hazards, which involves sudden and violent dynamic coal mass failure with rapid ejection of the broken material into the mine workings. Despite decades of research, the contributing mechanisms of coal bursts are still not completely understood. Hence, it remains challenging to forecast coal bursts and quantify their likelihood of occurrence. However, a range of geological and geotechnical factors are associated with coal bursts and can increase the coal burst proneness. This paper introduces a semi-quantitative coal burst risk classification system, namely, BurstRisk. Based on back-analysis of case histories from Australia, China and the United States, BurstRisk classifies the coal burst risk into three categories:low, medium and high risk. In addition, it allows mining engineers to modify the weighting of the selected factors based on specific conditions. The risk classification charts introduced are for both longwall retreat and development sections of long-wall mining operations. 8Effects of environmentally friendly agricultural land protection programs: Evidence from the Lake Seyfe area of Turkey显示文摘The primary purpose was to investigate the effect of the Environment Friendly Agricultural Land Protection(EFALP) program initiated in 2006.More specifically,the study objectives were to determine the adoption levels of environmentally friendly practices,the extension activities being performed in the region,and to analyse the factors influencing the adoption of the program.Respondents were selected by drawing two stratified samples based on farm size.Cross tabulation and chisquare tests of independence were used to achieve the first objective of the study.Focus-group interviews were conducted for the second objective,and finally,a binary logistic-regression model was applied for the third objective.The findings showed that the adopter farmers used land protection measures extensively relative to the non-adopters,and the Ministry of Food,Agriculture,and Livestock of Turkey,provides useful extension services in the region.Farm size,irrigated land,income level,specialization area,cooperative membership,and travel frequency to large cities influence the adoption of the EFALP program.The conclusion is that the promoted program significantly influenced the protection of the land and other natural resources,and therefore,the regions implementing programs of this type must be extended to other environmentally sensitive areas of the country.Ismet Boz 2016Journal of Integrative Agriculture2016,15,8:3

10Endoscopic ear surgery显示文摘Objectives:This article reviews the advantages and disadvantages of endoscopic ear surgery(EES).Method:Pubmed,Google and the Proquest Central Database at Kirikkale University were queried using the keywords'endoscopic ear surgery','ear surgery'and'endoscopy'to identify the literature needed for the review.Results:Endoscopes allow for enhanced surgical visualisation.The distal part of the apparatus is illuminated and contains lenses angled to allow a wider view of the operative area.Transcanal endoscopic techniques have transformed the external ear canal(EAC)into an operative gateway.The benefits EES can offer include wider views,enhanced imaging capabilities and increased magnification,and ways to see otherwise poorly visualisable portions of the middle ear.EES permits surgeons to operate using minimally invasive otological techniques.When compared with microscope-assisted surgery,endoscopic tympanoplasty has been shown to require a shorter operating time in some instances.There are a number of drawbacks to EES,however,which include the fact that it is a single-handed technique,that the light source may produce thermal injury and that visualisation using the endoscope is severely curtailed if bleeding is profuse.Conclusion:EES is a safe and effective technique.The current literature supports the idea that the results achieved by endoscopic methods are usually comparably beneficial to results obtained using conventional microscopic methods.Ismet Emrah Emre Cemal Cingi Nuray Bayar Muluk Joao Flaavio Nogueira 2020Journal of Otology2020,15,1:3
11Risk management in open cut coal mines显示文摘There are a number of geotechnical systems used at open cut operations of Anglo American's Metallurgical Coal business unit in Australia. These systems are mainly mine site specific, based on geological information and used as hazard plans. They are qualitative and reliant upon the experienced judgement of site based engineers and the general workforce. They are not suitable for calculating the associated risks of geological structures and mining responses. A uniform risk rating system that can be used to provide an unbiased, standard and quantifiable assessment of the risk from highwall and lowwall failures is therefore developed using the experience gained with such systems in Anglo American's South African operations. This system is a semi-quantitative risk rating system and takes into account the relative differences in the importance of hazards as experienced at each mine site as a result of different combinations of geotechnical factors and mining conditions. It is based on critical geotechnical and other parameters that have been identified by site mining engineers, geologists and geotechnical engineers. The primary advantage of this risk rating system is that all open cut mines in the Anglo American's Metallurgical Coal operations use a near identical system, which enables the user to compare the risk after each blast and with other mines. The system can be adjusted to meet local mine specific requirements. The implementation of this system, a computer program that automatically calculates the risks and recommends predetermined controls, has been made as practical and as easy to use as possible.
