| 1 | Retinopathy of prematurity: Past, present and future显示文摘Retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) is a vasoproliferative disorder of the retina occurring principally in new born preterm infants. It is an avoidable cause of childhood blindness. With the increase in the survival of preterm babies, ROP has become the leading cause of preventable childhood blindness throughout the world. A simple screening test done within a few weeks after birth by an ophthalmologist can avoid this preventable blindness. Although screening guidelines and protocols are strictly followed in the developed nations, it lacks in developing economies like India and China, which have the highest number of preterm deliveries in the world. The burden of this blindness in these countries is set to increase tremendously in the future, if corrective steps are not taken immediately. ROP first emerged in 1940 s and 1950 s, when it was called retrolental fibroplasia. Several epidemics of this disease were and are still occurring in different regions of the world and since then a lot of research has been done on this disease. However, till date very few comprehensive review articles covering all the aspects of ROP are published. This review highlights the past, present and future strategies in managing this disease. | 2 | Antioxidant activity and phenol and flavonoid contents of eight medicinal plants from Western Nepal显示文摘OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoids contents of selected medicinal plants form the Western region of Nepal.METHODS: The antioxidant activity of selected medicinal plants were determined by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity; total ferric ion reducing ability through spectroscopic analysis. The content of total phenols was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, whereas Aluminum chloride colorimetric method was used for flavonoid determination.RESULTS: Extracts of Syzygium Operculatus(87%),Astilbe Rivularis(83%) and Mallotus Philippnensis(88%) showed significant free radical scavenging activity with effective concentration(EC50) close to that of ascorbic acid. Syzygium Operculatus(96%),Astilbe Rivularis(97%) and Mallotus Philippnensis(97%) had potent reducing power in concentration dependent fashion. Those plant extract with higher free radical scavenging and ferric reducing effect also showed the greater content of both phenols and flavonoids, suggesting the correlation between polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity. Those plant extracts which showed better antioxidant activity assays, also demonstrated higher total phenol and flavonoid contents. | 4 | Curcumin induces differentiation of embryonic stem cells through possible modulation of nitric oxide-cyclic GMP pathway显示文摘Curcumin,an active ingredient of dietary spice used in curry,has been shown to exhibit anti-oxidant,anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative properties.Using EB directed differentiation protocol of H-9 human em-bryonic stem(ES)cells;we evaluated the effect of cur-cumin(0-20μmol/L)in enhancing such differentiation.Our results using real time PCR,western blotting and immunostaining demonstrated that curcumin signifi-cantly increased the gene expression and protein levels of cardiac specific transcription factor NKx2.5,cardiac troponin I,myosin heavy chain,and endothelial nitric oxide synthase during ES cell differentiation.Further-more,an NO donor enhanced the curcumin-mediated induction of NKx2.5 and other cardiac specific proteins.Incubation of cells with curcumin led to a dose depend-ent increase in intracellular nitrite to the same extent as giving an authentic NO donor.Functional assay for second messenger(s)cyclic AMP(cAMP)and cyclic GMP(cGMP)revealed that continuous presence of cur-cumin in differentiated cells induced a decrease in the baseline levels of cAMP but it significantly elevated baseline contents of cGMP.Curcumin addition to a cell free assay significantly suppressed cAMP and cGMP degradation in the extracts while long term treatment of intact cells with curcumin increased the rates of cAMP and cGMP degradation suggesting that this might be due to direct suppression of some cyclic nucleo-tide-degrading enzyme(phosphodiesterase)by curcu-min.These studies demonstrate that polyphenol curcu-min may be involved in differentiation of ES cells partly due to manipulation of nitric oxide signaling. | Kalpana Mujoo Lubov ENikonoff Vladislav G Sharin Nathan SBryan Alexander YKots Ferid Murad | 2012 | Protein & Cell2012,3,7: | 5 |

| 7 | Association of NFKB1 gene polymorphism (rs28362491) with levels of inflammatory biomarkers and susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy in Asian Indians显示文摘AIM To investigate the association of NFKB1 gene-94 ATTG insertion/deletion(rs28362491) polymorphism with inflammatory markers and risk of diabetic nephropathy in Asian Indians.METHODS A total of 300 subjects were recruited(100 each), normoglycemic,(NG); type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) without any complications(DM) and T2 DM with diabetic nephropathy [DM-chronic renal disease(CRD)]. Analysis was carried out by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and ELISA. Pearson's correlation, analysis of variance and logistic regression wereused for statistical analysis.RESULTS The allelic frequencies of-94 ATTG insertion/deletion were 0.655/0.345(NG), 0.62/0.38(DM) and 0.775/0.225(DM-CRD). | 10 | Nitrate regulates rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbiosis in common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)显示文摘Nitrogen‐limited conditions are considered to be a prerequisite for legume‐rhizobial symbiosis, but the effects of nitrate‐rich conditions on symbiotic status remain poorly understood. We addressed this issue by examining rhizobial(Rhizobim tropici) and arbusclarmycorrhizal(Glomus intraradices) symbiosis in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Negro Jamapa under nitrate pre‐incubation and continuous nitrate conditions. Our results indicate that nitrate pre‐incubation, independent of the concentration, did not affect nodule development. However, the continuous supply of nitrate at high concentrations impaired nodule maturation and nodule numbers. Low nitrate conditions, in addition to positively regulating nodule number, biomass, and nitrogenase activity, also extended the span of nitrogen‐fixing activity. By contrast, for arbuscular mycorrhizae, continuous 10 and 50mmol/L nitrate increased the percent root lengthcolonization, concomitantly reduced arbuscule size, and enhanced ammonia transport without affecting phosphate transport. | 14 | A hybrid weed optimized coverage path planning technique for autonomous harvesting in cashew orchards显示文摘A coverage path planning algorithm is proposed for discrete harvesting in cashew orchards.The main challenge in such an orchard is the collection of fruits and nuts lying on the floor.The manual collection of fruits and nuts is both time consuming and labour intensive.The scenario begs for automated collection of fruits and nuts.There are methods developed in research for continuous crop fields,but none for discrete coverage.The problem is visualized as a graph traversal problem and paths for autonomous maneuvering are generated.A novel Mahalanobis distance based partitioning approach for performing coverage is introduced.The proposed path planner was able to achieve a mean coverage of 52.78 percentage with a deviation of 18.95 percentage between the best and worst solutions.Optimization of the generated paths is achieved through a combination of local and global search techniques.This was implemented by combining a discrete invasive weed optimization technique with an improved 2-Opt operator.A case study is formulated for the fruit picking operations in the orchards of Puducherry.The performance of the proposed algorithm is benchmarked against existing methods and also with performance metrics such as convergence rate,convergence diversity and deviation ratio.The convergence rate was observed to be 99.97 percent and 97.83 percent for a dataset with 48 and 442 nodes respectively.The deviation ratio was 0.02 percent and 2.16 percent,with a convergence diversity of 1.18 percent and 30.14 percent for datasets with 48 and 442 nodes.The achieved solutions was on par with the global best solutions achieved so far for the test datasets. | Kalaivanan Sandamurthy Kalpana Ramanujam | 2020 | Information Processing in Agriculture2020,7,1: | 3 |
| 15 | Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the Northeastern states of India显示文摘Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a rare disease in most parts of the world, except for Southeast Asia, some parts of North Africa and the Arctic. It is mostly seen in people of Chinese origin. In India, NPC is also rare, except for the Hill States of Northeast India, particularly Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. The striking feature of NPC in Northeast India is that the incidence ranges over the complete spectrum from the lowest (as 0.5/100 000 to 2.0/100 000 among Caucasoid) to the highest (as ~20/100 000 among Cantonese/Zhongshan dialect Chinese). The age-adjusted rate of NPC in Kohima district of Nagaland State is 19.4/100 000, which is among the highest recorded rates. By contrast, in Assam, one of the so-called Hill States but not itself a hilly state, NPC is much less common. The Northeastern region is distinguished by a preponderance of the Tibeto-Burman languages and by variable mongoloid features among peoples of the region. The nature of the migratory populations who are presumed to be bearers of the mongoloid risk is unknown, but these NPC occurrence features provide an outstanding opportunity for NPC risk investigation, such as that of the hypothesis of Wee et al. for westward displacement of Chinese aborigines following the last glacial maximum. | Amal Chandra Kataki Malcolm J.
