1Multi-scale phylogenetic structure in coastal dune plant communities across the globe显示文摘Aims Studies integrating phylogenetic history and large-scale community assembly are few,and many questions remain unanswered.Here,we use a global coastal dune plant data set to uncover the important factors in community assembly across scales from the local filtering processes to the global long-term diversification and dispersal dynamics.Coastal dune plant communities occur worldwide under a wide range of climatic and geologic conditions as well as in all biogeographic regions.However,global patterns in the phylogenetic composition of coastal dune plant communities have not previously been studied.Methods The data set comprised vegetation data from 18463 plots in New Zealand,South Africa,South America,North America and Europe.The phylogenetic tree comprised 2241 plant species from 149 families.We calculated phylogenetic clustering(Net Relatedness Index,NRI,and Nearest Taxon Index,NTI)of regional dune floras to estimate the amount of in situ diversification relative to the global dune species pool and evaluated the relative importance of land and climate barriers for these diversification patterns by geographic analyses of phylogenetic similarity.We then tested whether dune plant communities exhibit similar patterns of phylogenetic structure within regions.Finally,we calculated NRI for local communities relative to the regional species pool and tested for an association with functional traits(plant height and seed mass)thought to vary along sea–inland gradients.Important Findings Regional species pools were phylogenetically clustered relative to the global pool,indicating regional diversification.NTI showed stronger clustering than NRI pointing to the importance of especially recent diversifications within regions.The species pools grouped phylogenetically into two clusters on either side of the tropics suggesting greater dispersal rates within hemispheres than between hemispheres.Local NRI plot values confirmed that most communities were also phylogenetically clustered within regions.NRI values decreased with increasing plant height and seed mass,indicating greater phylogenetic clustering in communities with short maximum height and good dispersers prone to wind and tidal disturbance as well as salt spray,consistent with environmental filtering along sea–inland gradients.Height and seed mass both showed significant phylogenetic signal,and NRI tended to correlate negatively with both at the plot level.Low NRI plots tended to represent coastal scrub and forest,whereas high NRI plots tended to represent herb-dominated vegetation.We conclude that regional diversification processes play a role in dune plant community assembly,with convergence in local phylogenetic community structure and local variation in community structure probably reflecting consistent coastal-inland gradients.Our study contributes to a better understanding of the globally distributed dynamic coastal ecosystems and the structuring factors working on dune plant communities across spatial scales and regions.Ane Kirstine Brunbjerg Jeannine Cavender-Bares Wolf L.Eiserhardt Rasmus Ejrnæs Lonnie W.Aarssen Hannah L.Buckley Estelle Forey Florian Jansen Jens Kattge Cynthia Lane Roy A.Lubke Angela T.Moles Ana Laura Monserrat Robert K.Peet Julissa Roncal Louise Wootton Jens-Christian Svenning 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,2:9

3New Applications of Zirconium Phosphate Nanomaterials显示文摘CONSPECTUS:The 2-D layers of the inorganic ion exchangerα-zirconium phosphate(Zr(HPO_(4))2·H_(2)O,α-ZrP)make this compound particularly stable to low pH,high temperature,and ionizing radiation.Initially studied for its ion exchange properties,once the conditions for its synthesis in crystalline form was accomplished by James Stynes and Abraham Clearfield in 1964,numerous other types of studies and applications followed.Extensive studies in the 1960s and 1970s on the thermodynamics of ion exchange led to insights into the intercalation mechanism of this material.The Clearfield group solved the crystal structure in 1968 and refined it in 1977.Powder methods were pioneered by the Clearfield group to solve the structure of this type of materials.In 1968 Giulio Alberti reported means to prepare zirconium phosphonates expanding the chemistry of these layered compounds.New phases of ZrP were also discovered(e.g.,γ,θ,λ,τ)and the applications ranged from heterogeneous catalysis to intercalation chemistry and solid-state proton conductors.Methods to exfoliate the layers of ZrP were developed in the 1990s as interest grew in new applications of these types of materials.For example,protein and enzyme intercalation was accomplished starting in the 1990s by the McLendon,Mallouk,and Kumar groups.In the early 2000s,the Colon group pioneered the use of théθphase of ZrP for the direct intercalation of large inorganic metal complexes that could not be directly intercalated into theαphase.Initial studies in the Colon group ranged from applications of these directly intercalated ZrP derivatives in photophysics and photochemistry,́amperometric biosensors,vapochromism,and vapoluminescence.Over the past decade,new applications of these materials have been developed in anticancer drug delivery and electrocatalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).ZrP has now proven to be a promising drug nanocarrier and its unique chemical microenvironment provided by theα-type layers and the interlayer space enhances catalytic activity for numerous types of reactions.Further elucidation of the catalytic active species under operando conditions as well as the chemical structure of drug-intercalated derivatives should provide new insights that will advance the design and development of new compounds with desired properties.The initial pioneering efforts of Clearfield and Alberti are being continued by numerous research groups providing new exciting areas of development on the chemistry of layered M(IV)phosphate and phosphonate compounds.In this Account we present the efforts of the Colon group during the past decade on studies of théapplications of ZrP for anticancer drug delivery and electrocatalysis of the OER.Mario V.Ramos-Garcés Julissa González-Villegas Aleannette López-Cubero Jorge L.Colón 2021Accounts of Materials Research2021,2,9:1

7Genetic diversity and relatedness inferred from microsatellite loci as a tool for broodstock management of fine flounder Paralichthys adspersus显示文摘Paralichthys adspersus is a native species from the Pacific coast of South America that is of great economic importance for Peruvian aquaculture.Even though establishing sustainable farming depends on avoiding irreversible damage to the population gene pool due to processes such as inbreeding,studies focusing on genetically characterizing farmed stocks are yet to be documented.By using ten microsatellite loci on captive and wild individuals of P.adspersus,we successfully characterized the only commercial broodstock of this species in Peru by means of determining the genetic diversity and inferring relatedness.Although most microsatellite loci showed deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium,the genetic diversity levels in the commercial broodstock were considered healthy compared to those obtained for a wild population,with an average number of alleles of 17.40,an effective number of alleles of 9.14,and an observed and expected heterozygosity of 0.49 and 0.87.No significant differences between the broodstock and the wild population in terms of genetic diversity were observed.The fixation index and analysis of molecular variance also indicated a low rate of differentiation between both populations.In relatedness estimation,the analysis based on five method-of-moment estimators and a maximum-likelihood estimator showed the category“unrelated”as being the most probable relationship among the individuals within the commercial broodstock.Our findings reveal the conservation of genetic diversity in this population and outline potential breeding strategies that hatchery managers could use to minimize the loss of genetic diversity and long-term inbreeding.This could help establish proper genetic management in captive populations of P.adspersus and should apply to other captive stocks where pedigree information is lacking.Julissa J.Sanchez-Velasquez Percy N.Pinedo-Bernal Lorenzo E.Reyes-Flores Carmen Yzasiga-Barrera Eliana Zelada-Mazmela 2022Aquaculture and Fisheries2022,7,6:0

10Spatial patterns of distribution and abundance of Harrisia portoricensis,an endangered Caribbean cactus显示文摘Aims The spatial distribution of biotic and abiotic factors may play a dominant role in determining the distribution and abundance of plants in arid and semiarid environments.In this study,we evaluated how spatial patterns of microhabitat variables and the degree of spatial dependence of these variables influence the distribution and abundance of the endangered cactus Harrisia portoricensis.Methods We used geostatistical analyses of five microhabitat variables(e.g.vegetation cover,soil cover and light incidence)and recorded the abundance of H.portoricensis in 50 permanent plots established across Mona Island,Puerto Rico,by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service as part of the Forest Inventory and Analysis(USDA–FIA).We also used partial Mantel tests to evaluate the relationships between microhabitat variables and abundance of H.portoricensis,controlling for spatial autocorrelation.Important findings Abundance of H.portoricensis showed strong affinities with microhabitat variables related to canopy structure,soil cover and light environment.The distribution of this cactus species throughout the island was consistent with the spatial variation patterns of these variables.In general,landscape-level analyses suggested a predictive value of microhabitat traits for the distribution and abundance of this endangered species.For sensitive cacti species,wherein abundance may be influenced by similar variables,these types of analyses may be helpful in developing management plans and identifying critical habitats for conservation.Julissa Rojas-Sandoval Elvia J.Meléndez-Ackerman 2013Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,6:0
