| 2 | Hydropower reservoirs on the upper Mekong River modify nutrient bioavailability downstream显示文摘Hydropower development is the key strategy in many developing countries for energy supply,climate-change mitigation and economic development.However,it is commonly assumed that river dams retain nutrients and therefore reduce downstream primary productivity and fishery catches,compromising food security and causing trans-boundary disputes.Contrary to expectation,here we found that a cascade of reservoirs along the upper Mekong River increased downstream bioavailability of nitrogen andphosphorus.The dams caused phytoplankton density to increase with hydraulic residence time and stratification of the stagnant reservoirs caused hypoxia at depth.This allowed the release of bioavailable phosphorus from the sediment and an increase in dissolved inorganic nitrogen as well as a shift in nitrogen species from nitrate to ammonium,which were transported downstream by the discharge of water from the base of the dam.Our findings provide a new perspective on the environmental impacts of river dams on nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning,with potential implications for sustainable development of hydropower worldwide. | Qiuwen Chen Wenqing Shi Jef Huisman Stephen C.Maberly Jianyun Zhang Juhua Yu Yuchen Chen Daniele Tonina Qitao Yi | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,9: | 15 |

| 5 | Prediction and diagnosis of colorectal anastomotic leakage: A systematic review of literature显示文摘Although many studies have focused on the preoperative risk factors of anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery(CAL), postoperative delay in diagnosis is common and harmful. This review provides a systematic overview of all available literature on diagnostic tools used for CAL. A systematic search of literature was undertaken using Medline, Embase, Cochrane and Webof-Science libraries. Articles were selected when a diagnostic or prediction tool for CAL was described and tested. Two reviewers separately assessed the eligibility and level of evidence of the papers. Sixty-nine articles were selected(clinical methods: 11, laboratory tests: 12, drain fluid analysis: 12, intraoperative techniques:22, radiology: 16). Clinical scoring leads to early awareness of probability of CAL and reduces delay of diagnosis. C-reactive protein measurement at postoperative day 3-4 is helpful. CAL patients are characterized by elevated cytokine levels in drain fluid in the very early postoperative phase in CAL patients. Intraoperative testing using the air leak test allows intraoperative repair of the anastomosis. Routine contrast enema is not recommended. If CAL is clinically suspected, rectal contrast-computer tomography is recommended by a few studies. In many studies a 'no-test' control group was lacking, furthermore no golden standard for CAL is available. These two factors contributed to a relatively low level of evidence in the majority of the papers. This paper provides a systematic overview of literature on the available tools for diagnosing CAL. | 7 | Climatic and tectonic controls on the fluvial morphology of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (China)显示文摘The geomorphological evolution of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau(NETP)could provide valuable information for reconstructing the tectonic movements of the region.And the considerable uplift and climatic changes at here,provide an opportunity for studying the impact of tectonic and monsoon climate on fluvial morphological development and sedimentary architecture of fluvial deposits.The development of peneplain-like surface and related landscape transition from basin filling to incision indicate an intense uplift event with morphological significance at around 10–17 Ma in the NETP.After that,incision into the peneplain was not continuous but a staircase of terraces,developed as a result of climatic influences.In spite of the generally persisting uplift of the whole region,the neighbouring tectonic blocks had different uplift rates,leading to a complicated fluvial response with accumulation terraces alternating with erosion terraces at a small spatial and temporal scale.The change in fluvial activity as a response to climatic impact is reflected in the general sedimentary sequence on the terraces from high-energy(braided)channel deposits(at full glacial)to lower-energy deposits of small channels(towards the end of the glacial),mostly separated by a rather sharp boundary from overlying flood-loams(at the glacial-interglacial transition)and overall soil formation(interglacial).Pronounced incision took place at the subsequent warm-cold transitions.In addition,it is hypothesized that in some strongly uplifted blocks energy thresholds could be crossed to allow terrace formation as a response to small climatic fluctuations(10~3–10~4 year timescale).Although studies of morpho-tectonic and geomorphological evolution of the NETP,improve understanding on the impacts of tectonic motions and monsoonal climate on fluvial processes,a number of aspects,such as the distribution and correlation of peneplain and the related morphological features,the extent and intensity of tectonic movements influencing the crossing of climatic thresholds,leading to terrace development,need to be studied further. | WANG Xianyan Jef VANDENBERGHE LU Huayu Ronald VAN BALEN | 2017 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2017,27,11: | 6 |

| 9 | From histology to micro-CT:Measuring and modeling resorption cavities and their relation to bone competence显示文摘The process of bone remodelling plays an essential role in the emergence and maintenance of bone geometry and its internal structure.Osteoclasts are one of the three main bone cell types that play a crucial role in the bone remodelling cycle.At the microstructural level,osteoclasts create bone deficits by eroding resorption cavities.Understanding how these cavities impair the mechanical quality of the bone is not only relevant in quantifying the impact of resorption cavities in healthy bone and normal aging,but maybe even more so in quantifying their role in metabolic bone diseases.Meta-bolic bone diseases and their treatment are both known to affect the bone remodelling cycle;hence,the bone mechanical competence can and will be affected.How-ever,the current knowledge of the precise dimensions of these cavities and their effect on bone competence is rather limited.This is not surprising considering the difficulties in deriving three-dimensional(3D)properties from two-dimensional(2D)histological sections.The measurement difficulties are reflected in the evalua-tion of how resorption cavities affect bone competence.Although detailed 3D models are generally being used to quantify the mechanical impact of the cavities,the representation of the cavities themselves has basicallybeen limited to simplified shapes and averaged cavityproperties.Qualitatively,these models indicate that cav-ity size and location are important,and that the effectof cavities is larger than can be expected from simplebone loss.In summary,the dimensions of osteoclastresorption cavities were until recently estimated from2D measures;hence,a careful interpretation of resorp-tion cavity dimensions is necessary.More effort needsto go into correctly quantifying resorption cavities usingmodern 3D imaging techniques like micro-computedtomography(micro-CT)and synchrotron radiation CT.Osteoclast resorption cavities affect bone competence.The structure-function relationships have been ana-lysed using computational models that,on one hand,provide rather detailed information on trabecular bonestructure,but on the other incorporate rather crudeassumptions on cavity dimensions.The use of high-resolution representations and parametric descriptionscould be potential routes to improve the quantitativefidelity of these models. | Jef Vanderoost G Harry van Lenthe | 2014 | World Journal of Radiology2014,6,9: | 3 |

| 15 | A Monte Carlo-based framework for risk-return analysis in mineral prospectivity mapping显示文摘Quantification of a mineral prospectivity mapping(MPM)heavily relies on geological,geophysical and geochemical analysis,which combines various evidence layers into a single map.However,MPM is subject to considerable uncertainty due to lack of understanding of the metallogenesis and limited spatial data samples.In this paper,we provide a framework that addresses how uncertainty in the evidence layers can be quantified and how such uncertainty is propagated to the prediction of mineral potential.More specifically,we use Monte Carlo simulation to jointly quantify uncertainties on all uncertain evidence variables,categorized into geological,geochemical and geophysical.On stochastically simulated sets of the multiple input layers,logistic regression is employed to produce different quantifications of the mineral potential in terms of probability.Uncertainties we address lie in the downscaling of magnetic data to a scale that makes such data comparable with known mineral deposits.Additionally,we deal with the limited spatial sampling of geochemistry that leads to spatial uncertainty.Next,we deal with the conceptual geological uncertainty related to how the spatial extent of the influence of evidential geological features such as faults,granite intrusions and sedimentary formations.Finally,we provide a novel way to interpret the established uncertainty in a risk-return analysis to decide areas with high potential but at the same time low uncertainty on that potential.Our methods are illustrated and compared with traditional deterministic MPM on a real case study of prospecting skarn Fe deposition in southwestern Fujian,China. | Ziye Wang Zhen Yin Jef Caers Renguang Zuo | 2020 | Geoscience Frontiers2020,11,6: | 3 |
