2Use of light-emitting diode(LED)lamps in combination with metal halide(MH)lamps reduce fuel consumption in the Vietnamese purse seine fishery显示文摘The use of high-power lights during night-time purse seining is common in Vietnam.Typically,metal halide(MH)lamps are used in the commercial fishery to attract fish,however these lights require more energy,have a shorter lifespan,and lower chromatic performance than light emitting diode(LED)lamps.This study examined catch efficiency and fuel consumption when using LED lamps in combination with reduced numbers of MH lamps(10.24 kW),compared to conventional lighting(28.6 kW),used during purse seining off the coast of Ninh Thuan province,Vietnam.The economic performance associated with using LED lamps in this fishery was also assessed.We found no significant differences in catch rates between the different light treatments,however fuel consumption was significantly reduced.Fuel consumption per nightly trip using LED with MH lamps was 70.8 l(11.1 l/h)compared to114 l(17.45 l/hr)using MH lamps alone,an estimated 37.9%reduction in fuel consumption.An investment in LED lamps by a fishing enterprise will require additional initial costs,however our analysis revealed the financial break-event point can be reached after approximately 101 nightly trips when the fuel price is at the 2015 level of USD$0.74 per l.Fishing enterprises can increase their profitability,and reduce CO2 emissions,by using LED lamps in the Vietnamese purse seine fishery.Khanh Q.Nguyen Phu D.Tran Luong T.Nguyen Phuong V.To Corey J.Morris 2021Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,4:2

10Fishing for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) with pots and gillnets: A catch comparison study along the southeast coast of Labrador显示文摘Gillnets are the primary fishing gear used to catch Atlantic cod(Gadus morhua)in coastal areas of Newfoundland and Labrador but are known to catch non-target species and produce lower quality fish than live-catch methods.The purpose of this study was to compare the catch efficiency of collapsible cod pots against gillnets near the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area(MPA),Labrador,where a reduction in by-catch is needed.Results showed that one cod pot caught half as much Atlantic cod as a gillnet,and pots had a relatively stable catch rate throughout the sampling period,whereas gillnets caught relatively few fish later in the sampling season.Moreover,nearly all fish sampled with pots were caught alive undamaged,whereas most gillnet-caught fish experienced damage or mortality.As a conservation measure pot-fishing would enable fishing within close proximity to the Gilbert Bay MPA and the live-release of visually distinguishable Gilbert Bay cod,thereby mitigating against the negative effects of commercial fishing on this protected Atlantic cod population.Khanh Q.Nguyen Corey J.Morris 2022Aquaculture and Fisheries2022,7,4:0
11Ultrafast Preparation of Nonequilibrium FeNi Spinels by Magnetic Induction Heating for Unprecedented Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis显示文摘Carbon-supported nanocomposites are attracting particular attention as high-performance,low-cost electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting.These are mostly prepared by pyrolysis and hydrothermal procedures that are time-consuming(from hours to days)and typically difficult to produce a nonequilibrium phase.Herein,for the first time ever,we exploit magnetic induction heating-quenching for ultrafast production of carbon-FeNi spinel oxide nanocomposites(within seconds),which exhibit an unprecedentedly high performance towards oxygen evolution reaction(OER),with an ultralow overpotential of only+260 mV to reach the high current density of 100 mA cm^(-2).Experimental and theoretical studies show that the rapid heating and quenching process(ca.10^(3)K s^(-1))impedes the Ni and Fe phase segregation and produces a Cl-rich surface,both contributing to the remarkable catalytic activity.Results from this study highlight the unique advantage of ultrafast heating/quenching in the structural engineering of functional nanocomposites to achieve high electrocatalytic performance towards important electrochemical reactions.Bingzhang Lu Qiming Liu Chunyang Wang Zaheer Masood David J.Morris Forrest Nichols Rene Mercado Peng Zhang Qingfeng Ge Huolin L.Xin Shaowei Chen 2022Research2022,,4:0
12Parkinson's disease: From genetics to molecular dysfunction and targeted therapeutic approaches显示文摘Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder in the elderly. As the pathogenesis of PD is still not fully understood, medications with the capacity of halting the disease progression are currently unavailable. The discovery of genes that are causative for, or increase susceptibility to PD is pivotal for the development of novel therapeutic approaches, as they are critical for the onset of PD and the molecular pathways underlying its pathogenesis. By reviewing relevant data, we discuss causative genes, and those associated with PD susceptibility and quantitative traits. Through Gene Ontology database and STRING analysis, we emphasize the roles of inorganic cation transmembrane transport pathways and hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis, in addition to the established roles of inflammation/oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of PD. It is hoped these insights 1) untangle the clinical complex presentations of PD, 2) reveal the interwoven molecular network leading to PD, and 3) identify critical molecular targets to facilitate novel PD drug discovery, with a view to providing improved consultation and personalized medicine for patients with PD in the future.Yue Huang Jun Wei Antony Cooper Margaret J.Morris 2023Genes & Diseases2023,10,3:0
