| 1 | Edible Bird's Nest Attenuates Menopause-Related Bone Degeneration in Rats via Increasing Bone Estrogen-Receptor Expression显示文摘Objective:To investigate the mechanistic basis for the attenuation of bone degeneration by edible bird's nest(EBN)in ovariectomized rats.Methods:Forty-two female Sprage-Dawley rats were randomized into 7 groups(6 in each group).The ovariectomized(OVX)and OVX+6%,3%,and 1.5%EBN and OVX+estrogen groups were given standard rat chow alone,standard rat chow+6%,3%,and 1.5%EBN,or standard rat chow+estrogen therapy(0.2mg/kg per day),respectively.The sham-operation group was surgically opened without removing the ovaries.The control group did not have any surgical intervention.After 12 weeks of intervention,blood samples were taken for serum estrogen,osteocalcin,and osteoprotegerin,as well as the measurement of magnesium,calcium abd zinc concentrations.While femurs were removed from the surrounding muscles to measure bone mass density using the X-ray edge detection technique,then collected for histology and estrogen receptor(ER)immunohistochemistry.Results:Ovariectomy altered serum estrogen levels resulting in increased food intake and weight gain,while estrogen and EBN supplementation attenuated these changes.Ovariectomy also reduced bone ER expression and density,and the production of osteopcalcin and osteorotegerin,which are important pro-osteoplastic hormones that promote bone mineraliztion and density.Conversely,estrogen and EBN increased serum estrogen levels leading to increased bone ER expression,pro-osteoplastic hormone production and bone density(all P<0.05).Conclusion:EBN could be used as a safe alternative to hormone replacement therapys for managing menopausal complications like bone degeneration. | HOU Zhi-ping TANG Shi-ying Jl Hai-ru HE Pei-yuan LI Yu-hong DONG Xian-ling DU Meng-nan Ismail Maznah HE Wen-jing | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2021,27,4: | 6 |
| 2 | Novel fibrin-fibronectin matrix accelerates mice skin wound healing显示文摘Plasma fibrinogen(F1)and fibronectin(pFN)polymerize to form a fibrin clot that is both a hemostatic and provisional matrix for wound healing.About 90%of plasma F1 has a homodimeric pair ofγchains(γγF1),and 10%has a heterodimeric pair ofγand more acidicγ′chains(γγ′F1).We have synthesized a novel fibrin matrix exclusively from a 1:1(molar ratio)complex ofγγ′F1 and pFN in the presence of highly active thrombin and recombinant Factor XIII(rFXIIIa).In this matrix,the fibrin nanofibers were decorated with pFN nanoclusters(termedγγ′F1:pFN fibrin).In contrast,fibrin made from 1:1 mixture ofγγF1 and pFN formed a sporadic distribution of“pFN droplets”(termedγγF1+pFN fibrin).Theγγ′F1:pFN fibrin enhanced the adhesion of primary human umbilical vein endothelium cells(HUVECs)relative to theγγF1+FN fibrin.Three dimensional(3D)culturing showed that theγγ′F1:pFN complex fibrin matrix enhanced the proliferation of both HUVECs and primary human fibroblasts.HUVECs in the 3Dγγ′F1:pFN fibrin exhibited a starkly enhanced vascular morphogenesis while an apoptotic growth profile was observed in theγγF1+pFN fibrin.Relative toγγF1+pFN fibrin,mouse dermal wounds that were sealed byγγ′F1:pFN fibrin exhibited accelerated and enhanced healing.This study suggests that a 3D pFN presentation on a fibrin matrix promotes wound healing. | Carlos Poblete Jara Ou Wang Thais Paulino do Prado Ayman Ismail Frank Marco Fabian Han Li Licio A.Velloso Mark A.Carlson William Burgess Yuguo Lei William H.Velander Eliana P.Araújo | 2020 | Bioactive Materials2020,5,4: | 5 |

| 4 | Mitotic motor CENP-E cooperates with PRC1 in temporal control of central spindle assembly显示文摘Error-free cell division depends on the accurate assembly of the spindle midzone from dynamic spindle microtubules to ensure chromatid segregation during metaphase-anaphase transition.However,the mechanism underlying the key transition from the mitotic spindle to central spindle before anaphase onset remains elusive.Given the prevalence of chromosome instability phenotype in gastric tumorigenesis,we developed a strategy to model context-dependent cell division using a combination of light sheet microscope and 3D gastric organoids.Light sheet microscopic image analyses of 3D organoids showed that CENP-E inhibited cells undergoing aberrant metaphase-anaphase transition and exhibiting chromosome segregation errors during mitosis.Highresolution real-time imaging analyses of 2D cell culture revealed that CENP-E inhibited cells undergoing central spindle splitting and chromosome instability phenotype.Using biotinylated syntelin as an affinity matrix,we found that CENP-E forms a complex with PRC1 in mitotic cells.Chemical inhibition of CENP-E in metaphase by syntelin prevented accurate central spindle assembly by perturbing temporal assembly of PRC1 to the midzone.Thus,CENP-E-mediated PRC1 assembly to the central spindle constitutes a temporal switch to organize dynamic kinetochore microtubules into stable midzone arrays.These findings reveal a previously uncharacterized role of CENP-E in temporal control of central spindle assembly.Since CENP-E is absent from yeast,we reasoned that metazoans evolved an elaborate central spindle organization machinery to ensure accurate sister chromatid segregation during anaphase and cytokinesis. | Xu Liu Leilei Xu Junying Li Phil Y.Yao Wanjuan Wang Hazrat Ismail Haowei Wang Bryce Liao Zhihong Yang Tarsha Ward Ke Ruan Jianchun Zhang Quan Wu Ping He Xia Ding Dongmei Wang Chuanhai Fu Zhen Dou Feng Yan Wenwen Wang Xing Liu Xuebiao Yao | 2020 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2020,12,8: | 3 |
| 5 | Effects of Additional HONO Sources on Visibility over the North China Plain显示文摘The objective of the present study was to better understand the impacts of the additional sources of nitrous acid(HONO)on visibility, which is an aspect not considered in current air quality models. Simulations of HONO contributions to visibility over the North China Plain(NCP) during August 2007 using the fully coupled Weather Research and Forecasting/Chemistry(WRF/Chem) model were performed, including three additional HONO sources:(1) the reaction of photo-excited nitrogen dioxide(NO*2) with water vapor;(2) the NO2 heterogeneous reaction on aerosol surfaces; and(3) HONO emissions. The model generally reproduced the spatial patterns and diurnal variations of visibility over the NCP well. When the additional HONO sources were included in the simulations, the visibility was occasionally decreased by 20%–30%(3–4 km) in local urban areas of the NCP. Monthly-mean concentrations of NO-3, NH+4, SO2-4and PM2.5were increased by 20%–52%(3–11μg m-3), 10%–38%, 6%–10%, and 6%–11%(9–17 μg m-3), respectively; and in urban areas, monthly-mean accumulationmode number concentrations(AMNC) and surface concentrations of aerosols were enhanced by 15%–20% and 10%–20%,respectively. Overall, the results suggest that increases in concentrations of PM2.5, its hydrophilic components, and AMNC,are key factors for visibility degradation. | 12 | Metallic and highly conducting two-dimensional atomic arrays of sulfur enabled by molybdenum disulfide nanotemplate显示文摘Element sulfur in nature is an insulating solid.While it has been tested that one-dimensional sulfur chain is metallic and conducting,the investigation on two-dimensional sulfur remains elusive.We report that molybdenum disulfide layers are able to serve as the nanotemplate to facilitate the formation of two-dimensional sulfur.Density functional theory calculations suggest that confined inbetween layers of molybdenum disulfide,sulfur atoms are able to form two-dimensional triangular arrays that are highly metallic.As a result,these arrays contribute to the high conductivity and metallic phase of the hybrid structures of molybdenum disulfide layers and two-dimensional sulfur arrays.The experimentally measured conductivity of such hybrid structures reaches up to 223 S/m.Multiple experimental results,including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),transition electron microscope(TEM),selected area electron diffraction(SAED),agree with the computational insights.Due to the excellent conductivity,the current density is linearly proportional to the scan rate until 30,000 mV s^(−1) without the attendance of conductive additives.Using such hybrid structures as electrode,the two-electrode supercapacitor cells yield a power density of 10^(6) Wh kg^(−1) and energy density ~47.5 Wh kg^(−1) in ionic liquid electrolytes.Our findings offer new insights into using two-dimensional materials and their Van der Waals heterostructures as nanotemplates to pattern foreign atoms for unprecedented material properties. | Shuze Zhu Xiumei Geng Yang Han Mourad Benamara Liao Chen Jingxiao Li Ismail Bilgin Hongli Zhu | 2017 | npj Computational Materials2017,,1: | 1 |
