| 1 | Cultured meat from muscle stem cells: A review of challenges and prospects显示文摘Growing muscle tissue in culture from animal stem cells to produce meat theoretically eliminates the need to sacrifice animals. So-called 'cultured' or 'synthetic' or 'in vitro' meat could in theory be constructed with different characteristics and be produced faster and more efficiently than traditional meat. The technique to generate cultured muscle tissues from stem cells was described long ago, but has not yet been developed for the commercial production of cultured meat products. The technology is at an early stage and prerequisites of implementation include a reasonably high level of consumer acceptance, and the development of commercially-viable means of large scale production. Recent advancements in tissue culture techniques suggest that production may be economically feasible, provided it has physical properties in terms of colour, flavour, aroma, texture and palatability that are comparable to conventional meat. Although considerable progress has been made during recent years, important issues remain to be resolved, including the characterization of social and ethical constraints, the fine-tuning of culture conditions, and the development of culture media that are cost-effective and free of animal products. | 4 | Laboratory Study of Geotextiles Performance on Reinforced Sandy Soil显示文摘This paper presents the results of triaxial tests conducted for the investigation of the influence of geotextiles on stress-strain and volumetric change behaviour of reinforced sandy soil. Tests were carried out on loose sandy soil. The experimental program includes drained compression tests on samples reinforced with different values of both geotextiles layers(Ng) and confining pressure(σ′c). Two methods of preparation were used: air pluviation(AP) and moist tamping(MT). Test results show that the geotextiles induce a quasi-linear increase in the stress deviator(q) and volume contraction in the reinforced sand. Method of preparation significantly affects the shear strength; samples prepared by the air pluviation method and mobilized deviator stresses are significantly higher than those prepared by moist tamping method. Geotextiles restrict the dilation of reinforced sandy soil and consequently the contraction increases. The mobilized friction angle increases with increasing number of layers and decreases with increasing initial confining pressure. Samples prepared by moist tamping present mobilized friction angles significantly lower than those prepared by air pluviation method. For samples prepared by the air pluviation method, the secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% decreases with increasing geotextile layers; those prepared by the moist tamping method, secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% increases with increasing number of geotextile layer sand confining pressure. | 5 | Use of soft computing techniques for tunneling optimization of tunnel boring machines显示文摘Thanks to advances in tunnel boring machine(TBM)and monitoring,significant progress has been achieved in the application of soft computing techniques for the optimization of TBM tunneling and the reduction of disturbance related to tunneling in urban areas.Because experimental,analytical,and numerical methods have limitations in solving problems related to TBM tunneling,engineers can use soft computing techniques in analyzing the relationship between the target tunneling responses and influential design inputs parameters,including the geometrical,geological,and TBM operational factors.These techniques are useful in achieving robust and low-cost solutions.However,engineers face difficulties in making an optimal choice of the soft computing technique to solve the complex problems related to TBM tunneling.To help with this choice,this study presents state of the art about the use of soft computing techniques in TBM tunneling through practical applications.The study proposes recommendations for the optimal use of these techniques,in particular(i)the importance of preliminary analyses for the selection and reduction of input parameters,(ii)the necessity to complete insufficient data using laboratory tests and numerical modeling,(iii)the selection of reduced number of hidden layers and nodes to avoid overfitting,(iv)the use of recurrent neural networks to deal with time-series data,and(v)the association of soft computing methods with hybrid optimization techniques to reduce the risk of convergence to local minima. | Isam Shahrour Wengang Zhang | 2021 | Underground Space2021,6,3: | 2 |
| 6 | Self-reported Taste and Smell Disorders in Patients with COVID-19:Distinct Features in China显示文摘Last December 2019,a cluster of viral pneumonia cases identified as coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)was reported in Wuhan,China.We aimed to explore the frequencies of nasal symptoms in patients with COVID-19,including loss of smell and taste,as well as their presentation as the first symptom of the disease and their association with the severity of COVID-19.In this retrospective study,1206 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were included and followed up by telephone one month after discharged from Tongji Hospital,Wuhan.Demographic data,laboratory values,comorbidities,symptoms,and numerical rating scale scores(0–10)of nasal symptoms were extracted from the hospital medical records,and confirmed or reevaluated by the telephone follow-up.From patients(n=1172)completing follow-up,199(17%)subjects had severe COVID-19 and 342(29.2%)reported nasal symptoms.20.6%COVID-19 patients had loss of taste(median score=6),while 11.4%had loss of smell(median score=5).Loss of taste scores,but not loss of smell scores,were significantly increased in severe vs.nonsevere COVID-19 patients.Interleukin(IL)-6 and lactose dehydrogenase(LDH)serum levels were positively correlated with loss of taste scores.About 80%of COVID-19 patients recovered from smell and taste dysfunction in 2 weeks.In this cohort,only 1 out of 10 hospital admitted patients had loss of smell while 1 out of 5 reported loss of taste which was associated to severity of COVID-19.Most patients recovered smell and taste dysfunctions in 2 weeks. | Jia SONG Yi-ke DENG Hai WANG Zhi-chao WANG Bo LIAO Jin MA Chao HE Li PAN Yang LIU Isam Alobid De-yun WANG Ming ZENG Joaquim Mullol Zheng LIU | 2021 | Current Medical Science2021,41,1: | 2 |
