1Trichoderma-Induced Improvement in Growth, Photosynthetic Pigments, Proline, and Glutathione Levels in Cucurbita pepo Seedlings under Salt Stress显示文摘Salt stress is one of the major abiotic stress in plants.However,traditional approaches are not always efficient in conferring salt tolerance.Experiments were conducted to understand the role of Trichoderma spp.(T.harzianum and T.viride)in growth,chlorophyll(Chl)synthesis,and proline accumulation of C.pepo exposed to salinity stress.There were three salt stress(50,100,and 150 mM NaCl)lavels and three different Trichoderma inoculation viz.T.harzianum,T.viride,and T.harzianum+T.viride.Salt stress significantly declined the growth in terms of the shoot and root lengths;however,it was improved by the inoculation of Trichoderma spp.C.pepo inoculated with Trichoderma exhibited increased synthesis of pigments like chl a,chl b,carotenoids,and anthocyanins under normal conditions.It was interesting to observe that such positive effects were maintained under salt-stressed conditions,as reflected by the amelioration of the salinity-mediated decline in growth,physiology and antioxidant defense.The inoculation of Trichoderma spp.enhanced the synthesis of proline,glutathione,proteins and increased the relative water content.In addition,Trichoderma inoculation increased membrane stability and reduced the generation of hydrogen peroxide.Therefore,Trichoderma spp.can be exploited either individually or in combination to enhance the growth and physiology of C.pepo under saline conditions.Mona H.Soliman Taghreed S.Alnusaire Nessreen FAbdelbaky Aisha A.M.Alayafi Mirza Hasanuzzaman Mohamed M.Rowezak Mohamed El-Esawi Amr Elkelish 2020Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2020,89,3:4
2Exogenous Selenium Mitigates Salt Stress in Soybean by Improving Growth,Physiology,Glutathione Homeostasis and Antioxidant Defense显示文摘The mechanism of selenium(Se)-induced salt tolerance was studied in moderately sensitive soybean(Glycine max L.)plants.To execute this view,soybean plants were imposed with salt stress(EC 6 dS m^(−1))applying NaCl.In other treatments,Se(0,25,50 and 75μM Na_(2)SeO_(4))was sprayed as co-application with that level of salt stress.Plant height,stem diameter,leaf area,SPAD value decreased noticeably under salt stress.Altered proline(Pro)level,together with decreased leaf relative water content(RWC)was observed in salt-affected plants.Salt stress resulted in brutal oxidative damage and increased the content of H_(2)O_(2),MDA level and electrolyte leakage.Exogenous Se spray alleviated oxidative damage through boosting up the antioxidant defense system by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase(CAT),peroxidase(POD)and glutathione reductase(GR),as well as by improving non-enzymatic antioxidants like glutathione(GSH)and GSH/glutathione disulfide(GSSG).The upregulated antioxidant defense system,restored Pro and leaf RWC,higher SPAD value conferred better growth and development in Se-sprayed salt-affected soybean plants which altogether put forth for the progressive yield contributing parameters and finally,seed yield.Among different doses of Se,soybean plants sprayed with 50μM Na_(2)SeO_(4)showed better salt tolerance.Hesham F.Alharby Mirza Hasanuzzaman Hassan S.Al-Zahrani Khalid Rehman Hakeem 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,2:3
3Nutrient dynamics in the Sundarbans mangrove estuarine system of Bangladesh under different weather and tidal cycles显示文摘Introduction:Seasonal and tidal variations in nutrient concentration and water quality were investigated in the western Sundarbans of Bangladesh during the post-monsoon,winter and monsoon seasons during 2010–2011.Methods:Water collected from the surface,middle and bottom layers at six locations of the Kholpetua-Arpangashia river system during high and low tides was analyzed for temperature,salinity,pH,dissolved oxygen(DO),total dissolved solids(TDS),electrical conductivity(EC)and dissolved nutrients(NO3–N,PO4–P,SO4 and NH3–N).Results:The study revealed that nutrient concentrations were influenced by seasonal changes.Mean nutrient levels during post-monsoon,winter and monsoon seasons,respectively,were in the following ranges:nitrate(0.06–0.40,0.06–0.46 and 0.08–0.46 mg/L);phosphate(0.09–0.18,0.05–0.42 and 0.10–0.16 mg/L);sulphate(58.71–86.14,68.68–119.01 and 78.15–136.47 mg/L)and ammonia(0.02–0.08,0.02–0.04 and 0.26–0.38 mg/L).Increased levels of PO4–P,SO4 and NH3–N and lower DO and salinity were recorded during the monsoon period.Most of the experimental sites showed higher NO3–N content during monsoon,whereas few elevated concentrations were observed during post-monsoon and winter periods.High and low tidal waters contained mean nutrient levels in the following ranges:nitrate(0.05–0.46 and 0.04–0.40 mg/L);phosphate(0.05–0.42 and 0.07–0.18 mg/L);sulphate(63.63–125.36 and 58.71–136.47 mg/L)and ammonia(0.02–0.38 and 0.02–0.37 mg/L)without following any distinct fluctuation patterns.The western part of the Sundarbans receives less freshwater input during the monsoon season than other areas of the ecosystem,which reduces the variability of nutrient levels and water quality components.Conclusions:This study provides considerable advances in understanding the seasonality of nutrient distribution with possible tidal influence.The data generated from this study will guide continuing efforts to support a sound management for coastal mangrove ecosystems.Shak Md Bazlur Rahaman Lipton Sarder Md Sayadur Rahaman Alokesh Kumar Ghosh Sudhin Kumar Biswas SM Shahjahan Siraj Khandaker Anisul Huq Abul Farah Md Hasanuzzaman Shikder Saiful Islam 2013Ecological Processes2013,2,1:2
4Phytochemical and in vitro biological investigations of methanolic extracts of Enhydra fluctuans Lour显示文摘Objective:To study the phytochemical and biological properties(antioxidant,anthelmintic and thrombolytic)of methanolic extracts of Enhydra fluctuant Lour.,a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family.Methods:The phytochemical evaluation was carried out by qualitative analysis.In vitro antioxidant activity of extract was studied using free radical scavenging assay,ability of reduction,total phenol and total flavonoid contents determination assays.The anthelmintic activity was determined using paralysis and death time of Pheretima posthuma(earthworm)and thrombolytic activity by clot disruption assay.Results:The phytochemical evaluation showed significant presence of flavonoids,triterpenes,carbohydrate,reducing sugars,saponins,phenols,diterpenes,protein and tannin.The antioxidant activity was found significant[IC_(50)(135.20±036)μg/mL]as compared to ascorbic acid[(130.00±0.76)μg/mL].The reducing power was increased with concentration.Total phenol and total flavonoid contents were(153.08±0.38)mg/mL and(172.04±0.56)mg/mL respectively.The paralysis and death time of earthworms for different concentrations of extract were determined and compared with albendazole.The results showed that 10 mg/mL of the crude extract had similar effect with albendazole.Additionally,the crude extract showed a concentration depended relationship with its anthelmintic property.The clot lysis activity of crude extract was compared to the standard streptokinase's clot lysis(40.13%)activity and found significant(31%).Conclusions:The study proves that the crude methanolic extract of Enhydra fluctuant Lour,has significant antioxidant,anthelmintic and thrombolytic activity containing wide range of phytochemicals.Sourov Kuri Mustahsan Billah S.M.Masud Rana Zannatul Naim Mahmodul Islam Hasanuzzaman Ramjan Ali Rana Banik 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,4:2
5Targeting Glycinebetaine for Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Crop Plants:Physiological Mechanism,Molecular Interaction and Signaling显示文摘In the era of climate change,abiotic stresses(e.g.,salinity,drought,extreme temperature,flooding,metal/metalloid(s),UV radiation,ozone,etc.)are considered as one of the most complex environmental constraints that restricts crop production worldwide.Introduction of stress-tolerant crop cultivars is the most auspicious way of surviving this constraint,and to produce these types of tolerant crops.Several bioengineering mechanisms involved in stress signaling are being adopted in this regard.One example of this kind of manipulation is the osmotic adjustment.The quarternary ammonium compound glycinebetaine(GB),also originally referred to as betaine is a methylated glycine derivative.Among the betaines,GB is the most abundant one in plants,which is mostly produced in response to dehydration caused by different abiotic stresses like drought,salinity,and extreme temperature.Glycinebetaine helps in decreased accumulation and detoxification of ROS,thereby restoring photosynthesis and reducing oxidative stress.It takes part in stabilizing membranes and macromolecules.It is also involved in the stabilization and protection of photosynthetic components,such as ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase,photosystem II and quarternary enzyme and protein complex structures under environmental stresses.Glycinebetaine was found to perform in chaperone-induced protein disaggregation.In addition,GB can confer stress tolerance in very low concentrations,and it acts in activating defense responsive genes with stress protection.Recently,field application of GB has also shown protective effects against environmental adversities increasing crop yield and quality.In this review,we will focus on the role of GB in conferring abiotic stress tolerance and the possible ways to engineer GB biosynthesis in plants.Mirza Hasanuzzaman Aditya Banerjee M.H.M.Borhannuddin Bhuyan Aryadeep Roychoudhury Jubayer Al Mahmud Masayuki Fujita 2019Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2019,88,3:2
6Potassium-Induced Regulation of Cellular Antioxidant Defense and Improvement of Physiological Processes in Wheat under Water Deficit Condition显示文摘Drought is the most common form of abiotic stress that reduces plant growth and productivity.It causes plant injuries through elevated production of reactive oxygen species(ROS).Potassium(K)is a vital plant nutrient that notably ameliorates the detrimental effect of drought stress in the plant.A pot experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Stress Responses,Faculty of Agriculture,Kagawa University,Japan,under controlled environment of green house to explore the role of K in mitigating drought severity in wheat(Triticum asevitum L.)seedlings.Three days after germination,seedlings were exposed to three water regimes viz.,100,50,and 20%field capacity(FC)for 21 days.Potassium was adjusted in Hoagland nutrient solution at 0,6 and 12 mM concentration and applied to pot instead of normal water.Results show that,water deficit stress notably reduced plant growth,biomass accumulation,leaf relative water content(RWC)along with reduced photosynthetic pigments.Increased amount of biochemical stress markers viz.,malondialdehyde(MDA),hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)),methylglyoxal(MG),proline(Pro)as well as an impaired antioxidant defense system were observed in drought affected wheat plants.On the contrary,K supplementation resulted in improvement of biochemical and physiological parameters that worked behind in improving growth and development of the wheat plants.In addition,enzymes of ascorbateglutathione(AsA-GSH)cycle were also enhanced by supplemented K that accelerated the ROS detoxification process in plant.Although glyoxalse system did not performed well till MG was detoxified might following another short stepped pathways.Our results revealed that drought stressed plants showed better performances in terms of biochemical and physiological attributes,antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system,as well as ROS detoxification due to K supplementation with better performance at 12 mM K added in 50%FC growing condition.Abdul Awal Chowdhury Masud MdFazlul Karim M.H.M.Borhannuddin Bhuyan Jubayer Al Mahmud Kamrun Nahar Masayuki Fujita Mirza Hasanuzzaman 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,2:2

17Changes in Germination and Seedling Traits of Sesame under Simulated Drought显示文摘Drought is considered one of the leading abiotic constraints to agricultural crop production globally.Present study was conducted to assess the effects of different drought treatments(viz.Control,10%PEG,and 20%PEG)on seed germination,germination indices,seedling traits,and drought tolerance indices of sesame.Our results showed that maximum reduction in the studied parameters was observed at higher PEG concentration(i.e.,20%PEG).As compared to control,the drought treatments viz.10%and 20%PEG decreased the values for germination indices,such as germination percentage,coefficient of variation of germination time,germination index,and seedling vigor index.Similarly,for seedling traits,the values were decreased for root length,shoot length,root shoot ratio,root fresh weight,shoot fresh weight,root dry weight and shoot dry weight under 10%and 20%PEG treatments significantly in comparison with control.Furthermore,relative to control,the values for drought tolerance indices,such as germination drought tolerance index,root length drought tolerance index,shoot length drought tolerance index,total seedling length drought tolerance index,root fresh weight drought tolerance index,shoot fresh weight drought tolerance index,total fresh weight drought tolerance index,root dry weight drought tolerance index,shoot dry weight drought tolerance index and total dry weight drought tolerance index were also reduced under 10%and 20%PEG treatments,respectively.Our results confirms that drought impact on seed germination and seedling traits could be quantified by using different indices which can further help to design drought adaptation and mitigation strategies.Based on these results it can be concluded that germination indices,seedling traits,and drought tolerance indices have great potential to simulate drought stress impacts on different crop traits thus they should be used in all kinds of stress related studies.Mukhtar Ahmed Ahmed M.S.Kheir Muhammad Zeeshan Mehmood Shakeel Ahmad Mirza Hasanuzzaman 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,4:1
