| 2 | The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer: system and applications显示文摘The Sunway Taihu Light supercomputer is the world's first system with a peak performance greater than 100 PFlops. In this paper, we provide a detailed introduction to the Taihu Light system. In contrast with other existing heterogeneous supercomputers, which include both CPU processors and PCIe-connected many-core accelerators(NVIDIA GPU or Intel Xeon Phi), the computing power of Taihu Light is provided by a homegrown many-core SW26010 CPU that includes both the management processing elements(MPEs)and computing processing elements(CPEs) in one chip. With 260 processing elements in one CPU, a single SW26010 provides a peak performance of over three TFlops. To alleviate the memory bandwidth bottleneck in most applications, each CPE comes with a scratch pad memory, which serves as a user-controlled cache. To support the parallelization of programs on the new many-core architecture, in addition to the basic C/C++and Fortran compilers, the system provides a customized Sunway Open ACC tool that supports the Open ACC2.0 syntax. | 3 | SCStore: Managing Scientific Computing Packages for Hybrid System with Containers显示文摘Managing software packages in a scientific computing environment is a challenging task, especially in the case of heterogeneous systems. It is error prone when installing and updating software packages in a sophisticated computing environment. Testing and performance evaluation in an on-the-fly manner is also a troublesome task for a production system. In this paper, we discuss a package management scheme based on containers. The newly developed method can ease the maintenance complexity and reduce human mistakes. We can benefit from the self-containing and isolation features of container technologies for maintaining the software packages among intricately connected clusters. | 4 | Using a global reference sample set and a cropland map for area estimation in China显示文摘A technically transparent and freely available reference sample set for validation of global land cover mapping was recently established to assess the accuracies of land cover maps with multiple resolutions.This sample set can be used to estimate areas because of its equal-area hexagon-based sampling design.The capabilities of these sample set-based area estimates for cropland were investigated in this paper.A 30-m cropland map for China was consolidated using three thematic maps(cropland,forest and wetland maps)to reduce confusion between cropland and forest/wetland.We compared three area estimation methods using the sample set and the 30 m cropland map.The methods investigated were:(1)pixel counting from a complete coverage map,(2)direct estimation from reference samples,and(3)model-assisted estimation combining the map with samples.Our results indicated that all three methods produced generally consistent estimates which agreed with cropland area measured from an independent national land use dataset.Areas estimated from the reference sample set were less biased by comparing with a National Land Use Dataset of China(NLUD-C).This study indicates that the reference sample set can be used as an alternative source to estimate areas over large regions. | YULe LI XueCao LI CongCong ZHAO YuanYuan NIU ZhenGuo HUANG HuaBing WANG Jie CHENG YuQi LU Hui SI YaLi YU ChaoQing FU HaoHuan GONG Peng | 2017 | Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,2: | 1 |
| 5 | A Fully Pipelined Probability Density Function Engine for Gaussian Copula Model显示文摘The Gaussian Copula Probability Density Function(PDF) plays an important role in the fields of finance,hydrological modeling,biomedical study,and texture retrieval. However,the existing schemes for evaluating the Gaussian Copula PDF are all computationally-demanding and generally the most time-consuming part in the corresponding applications. In this paper,we propose an FPGA-based design to accelerate the computation of the Gaussian Copula PDF. Specifically,the evaluation of the Gaussian Copula PDF is mapped into a fully-pipelined FPGA dataflow engine by using three optimization steps: transforming the calculation pattern,eliminating constant computations from hardware logic,and extending calculations to multiple pipelines. | 6 | A fully-customized dataflow engine for 3D earthquake simulation with a complex topography显示文摘With HPC(high performance computing)evolving into the exascale era,improvements in computing performance and power efficiency have become increasingly more important.Based on our previous work on enabling earthquake simulations on a large scale on Sunway TaihuLight,we further explore other possibilities to improve the application through a fully-customized hardware design on reconfigurable FPGA(field programmable gate array)devices.We investigate the feasibility and the potential benefits of a complete fixed-point design.We first perform a coarse-resolution-based simulation to analyze the representation range and precision needed to capture both the total energy and the energy distribution of variables over space and time.We then derive a complete fixed-point design that identifies the suitable bitwidth for major categories of variables and dynamically represents the range through a dynamic scaling scheme.Finally,we use the optimized fixed-point design to run a case of the Wenchuan earthquake to demonstrate the potential of supporting large-scale scientific simulations on FPGA devices.The results demonstrate that an 18-bit fixed-point design already provides an almost identical description of the seismic events in the Wenchuan scenario down to a single-precision floating-point version and provides sustainable performance equivalent to 13.1 Intel Xeon Gold 615418-core CPUs or 2.10 Sunway 260-core processors,with performance per watt(power efficiency)improved by 15.3 and 3.72 times compared with the Intel Xeon Gold 615418-core CPUs and the Sunway 260-core processors,respectively. | Bingwei CHEN Haohuan FU Wayne LUK Guangwen YANG | 2022 | Science China(Information Sciences)2022,65,5: | 0 |
