3Morphological and molecular characterization of fungus isolated from tropical bed bugs in Northern Peninsular Malaysia, Cimex hemipterus(Hemiptera: Cimicidae)显示文摘Objective:To investigate some morphological and molecular characteristics of fungal parasites isolated from wild tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus.Methods: A series of culture methods were used to obtain fungal isolates from i eld-collected bed bugs. Characteristics of the isolates such as colony appearance, mycelial texture and pigmentation were studied to explore their morphology. Isolates were also subjected to a PCRbased genotyping test.Results: There were noticeable dif erences in morphological characteristics among the four isolates. Conidial areas of one isolate were dark green, whereas those of the remaining colonies were olive-green, black or dark brown. Conidia of the dark green isolate were globose, while those of olive-green, black and dark brown isolates were globose to subglobose, globose to spherical and globose to subglobose/i nely roughened, respectively. 8Roles of fermented plant-,dairy-and meat-based foods in the modulation of allergic responses显示文摘This review attempts to delineate the effects and roles of fermented foods on allergic responses(AR),specifically from milk,plant,and meat sources.Evidence for AR alleviation and aggravation were noted for many different fermented food groups.Positive outcomes on AR through fermented foods could be linked to microbial hydrolysis of food allergens,improvement in gut microbiota robustness,and modulation of the immune system that promotes a balance between T helper 1(Th1)and Th2 cells.Studies on plant-based,non-protein rich fermented foods tend to show more favourable results compared to those on meat-based or protein-rich group.The usage of specific and known starter cultures are helpful in alleviating AR,as in the case for many yogurt,Kefir or Dahi products.Sufficient fermentation time was also deemed important,exemplified in studies that showed inefficient AR reduction through consumption of fresh cheese.However,formation of new allergens through fermentation of certain meat-based foods,or by using specific fermenting microbes(e.g.Penicillium sp.),is possible.Thus,combination of starter cultures and food substrates must be considered in preventing or eliminating AR from intake of these foods.This review may aid consumers to make informed decision during the consumption of fermented food.Muhamad Hafi z Abd Rahim Nur Hazlin Hazrin-Chong Hanis Hazeera Harith Wan Abd Al Qadr Imad Wan-Mohtar Rashidah Sukor 2023Food Science and Human Wellness2023,12,3:1

10Inhibition mechanisms of secretome proteins from Paenibacillus polymyxa Kp10 and Lactococcus lactis Gh1 against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus显示文摘Objective:To determine the inhibition mechanisms of secretome protein extracted from Paenibacillus polymyxa Kp10(Kp10)and Lactococcus lactis Gh1(Gh1)against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus(VRE).Methods:The sensitivity and viability of MRSA and VRE treated with secretome proteins of Kp10 and Gh1 were determined using minimal inhibitory concentration,minimum bactericidal concentration,and time-to-kill assays.The morphological changes were observed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.To elucidate the antimicrobial mechanism of secretome protein of Kp10 and Gh1 against MRSA and VRE,2D gel proteomic analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was run by comparing upregulated and downregulated proteins,and the proton motive force study including the efflux of ATP,pH gradient,and the membrane potential study were conducted.Results:MRSA and VRE were sensitive to Kp10 and Gh1 secretome protein extracts and displayed apparent morphological and internal composition changes.Several proteins associated with cellular component functions were either downregulated or upregulated in treated MRSA and VRE by changing the membrane potential gradient.Conclusions:Kp10 and Gh1 secretome proteins reduce the growth of VRE and MRSA by damaging the cell membrane.Cell division,cell wall biosynthesis,and protein synthesis are involved in the inhibition mechanism.Nurul Hana Zainal Baharin Nur Fadhilah Khairil Mokhtar Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa Nurul Diana Dzaraly AbdulRahman Muthanna Mazen M.Jamil Al-Obaidi Mohd Hafis Yuswan Sahar Abbasiliasi Norasfaliza Rahmad Wan Ahmad Kamil Wan Nur Ismah Amalia Mohd Hashim Shuhaimi Mustafa 2022Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2022,12,11:0
11Comorbid psoriasis-bipolar disorder successfully treated with apremilast:much more than a mere coincidence?显示文摘Psoriasis is a chronic,immune mediated,systemic inflammatory skin disease with a reported prevalence of 0.6%-4.8%in the general population.Bipolar disorder(BP)is a severe episodic psychiatric disorder that ranks as the fourth leading cause of disability.Recent evidence suggests that genetic and immunological factors play a significant role in the developmeht of both disorders.Studies have also shown a higher association of psychiatric disorders among patients with psoriasis.Moreover,several autoimmune comorbidities have been reported in association with BP.Here,we describe a young woman with BP who developed psoriasis after 1 year of developing BP and showed exacerbations in psoriasis lesions with each manic episode.We also highlight the safe and efficacious use of apremilast for psoriatic lesions in the woman.N A Uvais S V Rakhesh T P Afra N A Bishurul Hafi Muhammed Razmi T 2020General Psychiatry2020,33,3:0
