| 1 | The use of environmentally sustainable bio-derived solvents in solvent extraction applications——A review显示文摘Replacement of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) by greener or more environmentally sustainable solvents is becoming increasingly important due to the increasing health and environmental concerns as well as economic pressures associated with VOCs.Solvents that are derived from biomass,namely bio-derived solvents,are a type of green solvent that have attracted intensive investigations in recent years because of their advantages over conventional VOCs,such as low toxicity,biodegradability and renewability.This review aims to summarize the use of bio-derived solvents in solvent extraction applications,with special emphasis given to utilization of biodiesels and terpenes.Compared with the conventional VOCs,the overall performance of these bio-derived solvents is comparable in terms of extraction yields and selectivity for natural product extraction and no difference was found for metal extraction.To date most researchers have focused on laboratory scale thermodynamics studies.Future work is required to develop and test new bio-derived solvents and understand the kinetic performance as well as solvent extraction pilot plant studies. | Zheng Li Kathryn H.Smith Geoffrey W.Stevens | 2016 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,2: | 7 |
| 2 | Carbon dioxide capture by solvent absorption using amino acids: A review显示文摘The emission of large amounts of carbon dioxide is of major concern with regard to increasing the risk of climate change. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) has been proposed as an important pathway for slowing the rate of these emissions. Solvent absorption of CO_2 using amino acid solvents has drawn much attention over the last few years due to advantages including their ionic nature, low evaporation rate, low toxicity, high absorption rate and high biodegradation potential, compared to traditional amine solvents. In this review, recent progress on the absorption kinetics of amino acids is summarised, and the engineering potential of using amino acids as carbon capture solvents is discussed. The reaction orders between amino acids and carbon dioxide are typ- ically between 1 and 2. Glycine exhibits a reaction order of 1, whilst, by comparison, lysine, proline and sarcosine have the largest reaction constants with carbon dioxide which is much larger than that of the benchmark solvent monoethanolamine (MEA). Ionic strength, p H and cations such as sodium and potassium have been shown to be important factors influencing the reactivity of amino acids. Corrosivity and reactivity with impurities such as SOx and NOxare not considered to be significant problems for amino acids solvents. The precipitation of CO_2 loaded amino acid salts is thought to be a good pathway for increasing CO_2loading capacity and cutting desorption energy costs if well-controlled. It is recommended that more detailed research on amino acid degradation and overall process energy costs is conducted. | 5 | Clinical laboratory and imaging evidence for effectiveness of agarose-agarose macrobeads containing stem-like cells derived from a mouse renal adenocarcinoma cell population (RMBs) in treatment-resistant, advanced metastatic colorectal cancer:Evaluation of显示文摘Objective: The complexity, heterogeneity and capacity of malignant neoplastic cells and tumors for rapid change and evolution suggest that living-cell-based biological-systems approaches to cancer treatment are merited. Testing this hypothesis, the tumor marker, metabolic activity, and overall survival(OS) responses, to the use of one such system, implantable macrobeads [RENCA macrobeads(RMBs)], in phase I and IIa clinical trials in advanced,treatment-resistant metastatic colorectal cancer(m CRC) are described here.Methods: Forty-eight m CRC patients(30 females; 18 males), who had failed all available, approved treatments,underwent RMB implantation(8 RMB/kg body weight) up to 4 times in phase I and phase IIa open-label trials.Physicals, labs [tumor and inflammation markers, lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)] and positron emission tomography-computed tomography(PET-CT) imaging to measure number/volume and metabolic activity of the tumors were performed pre-and 3-month-post-implantation to evaluate safety and initial efficacy(as defined by biological responses). PET-CT maximum standard uptake value(SUVmax)(baseline and d 90; SUVmax ≥2.5), LDH,and carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) and/or cancer antigen 19-9(CA 19-9) response(baseline, d 30 and/or d 60)were assessed and compared to OS.Results: Responses after implantation were characterized by an at least 20% decrease in CEA and/or CA 19-9 in75% of patients. Fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)-positive lesions(phase I, 39; 2 a, 82) were detected in 37/48 evaluable patients, with 35% stable volume and stable or decreased SUV(10) plus four with necrosis; 10, increased tumor volume, SUV. LDH levels remained stable and low in Responders(R)(d 0–60, 290.4–333.9), but increased steadily in Non-responders(NR)(d 0–60, 382.8–1,278.5)(d 60, P=0.050). Responders to RMBs, indicated by the changes in the above markers, correlated with OS(R mean OS=10.76 months; NR mean OS=4.9 months; P=0.0006).Conclusions: The correlations of the tumor marker, tumor volume and SUV changes on PET-CT, and LDH levels themselves, and with OS, support the concept of a biological response to RMB implantation and the validity of the biological-systems approach to m CRC. | 17 | A continental back-arc setting for the Namaqua belt:Evidence from the Kakamas Domain显示文摘A study of the NW Kakamas Domain in South Africa/Namibia provides a new,unified lithostratigraphy and evolutionary history applicable to the whole Namaqua Sector.The Mesoproterozoic history ranges from~1350 Ma to 960 Ma,but isotopic evidence suggests it was built upon pre-existing Paleoproterozoic continental crust that extended west from the Archaean Craton.In eastern Namaqualand,early rift-related magmatism and sedimentation at~1350 Ma occurred in a confined ocean basin.Subsequent tectonic reversal and subduction at~1290–1240 Ma led to establishment of the Areachap,Konkiep and Kaaien Domains.In the Kakamas Domain,widespread deposition of pelitic sediments occurred at~1220 Ma(Narries Group).These contain detrital zircons derived from proximal crust with ages between~2020 Ma and 1800 Ma(western Palaeoproterozoic domains)and 1350–1240 Ma(eastern early Namaqua domains),suggesting pre-sedimentation juxtaposition.The pelites underwent granulite grade metamorphism at~1210 Ma(peak conditions:4.5–6 kbar and 770–850°C),associated with voluminous,predominantly S-type granitoid orthogneisses between~1210 Ma and 1190 Ma(Eendoorn and Ham River Suites)and low-angle ductile(D_(2))deformation which continued until~1110 Ma,interspersed with periods of sedimentation.This enduring P-T regime is inconsistent with the expected crustal over-thickening associated with the generally-accepted collision-accretion Namaqualand model.Rather,we propose the Namaqua Sector is a‘hot orogen’developed in a wide continental back-arc with subduction west of the present-day outcrop.The observed high geotherm resulted from thinned back-arc lithosphere accompanied by an influx of mantle-derived melts.Ductile D_(2)deformation resulted from'bottom-driven'tectonics and viscous drag within the crust by convective flow in the underlying asthenospheric mantle.This extended tectonothermal regime ceased at~1110 Ma when SW-directed thrusting stacked the Namaqua Domains into their current positions,constrained in the Kakamas Domain by late-to post-tectonic I-type granitoids intruded between~1125 Ma and 1100 Ma(Komsberg Suite).The thermal peak then shifted west to the Bushmanland and Aus Domains,where voluminous granites(1080–1025 Ma)were associated with high-T/low-P granulite facies thermal metamorphism and mega-scale open folding(D_(3)).Unroofing of the Namaqua Sector is marked by large-scale,NW-trending,sub-vertical transcurrent dextral shear zones and associated pegmatites and leucogranites at~990 Ma. | P.H.Macey R.J.Thomas A.F.M.Kisters J.F.A.Diener M.Angombe S.Doggart C.A.Groenewald C.W.Lambert J.A.Miller H.Minnaar H.Smith H.F.G.Moen E.Muvangua A.Nguno G.Shifotoka J.Indongo D.Frei C.Spencer P.le Roux R.A.Armstrong C.Tinguely | 2022 | Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,4: | 0 |
