1Helicity dependent directional surface plasmon polariton excitation using a metasurface with interfacial phase discontinuity显示文摘Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)have been widely exploited in various scientific communities,ranging from physics,chemistry to biology,due to the strong confinement of light to the metal surface.For many applications,it is important that the free space photon can be coupled to SPPs in a controllable manner.In this Letter,we apply the concept of interfacial phase discontinuity for circularly polarizations on a metasurface to the design of a novel type of polarization-dependent SPP unidirectional excitation at normal incidence.Selective unidirectional excitation of SPPs along opposite directions is experimentally demonstrated at optical frequencies by simply switching the helicity of the incident light.This approach,in conjunction with dynamic polarization modulation techniques,opens gateway towards integrated plasmonic circuits with electrically reconfigurable functionalities.Lingling Huang Xianzhong Chen Benfeng Bai Qiaofeng Tan Guofan Jin Thomas Zentgraf Shuang Zhang 2013Light(Science & Applications)2013,2,1:31
2Urban Three-dimensional Expansion and Its Driving Forces——A Case Study of Shanghai,China显示文摘Urban expansion is a phenomenon of urban space increase,and an important measuring index of the process of urbanization.Taking Shanghai as an example,the changes of urban average height and built-up area were studied to represent city's vertical and horizontal increases respectively,and statistical methods were used to analyze the driving forces of urban expansion.The research drew following conclusions:1) The urban expansion process of Shanghai from 1985 to 2006 had a clear periodic feature,and could be divided into three stages:vertical expansion in dominance,coordinated vertical and horizontal expansion,and horizontal expansion in dominance.2) The average height and quantity of buildings in core city were significantly bigger than those in suburbs,but the changing speed of the latter was faster.And 3) urbanization process was the major driving force for the city's horizontal expansion,while industrial structure improvement was the key driving factor for the vertical expansion.Those two driving forces were simultaneously affected by city's political factors.SHI Longyu SHAO Guofan CUI Shenghui LI Xuanqi LIN Tao YIN Kai ZHAO Jingzhu 2009Chinese Geographical Science2009,19,4:20
3Drone remote sensing for forestry research and practices显示文摘Drones of various shapes, sizes, and functionalities have emerged over the past few decades, and their civilian applications are becoming increasingly appealing.Flexible, low-cost, and high-resolution remote sensing systems that use drones as platforms are important for filling data gaps and supplementing the capabilities of crewed/manned aircraft and satellite remote sensing systems. Here, we refer to this growing remote sensing initiative as drone remote sensing and explain its unique advantages in forestry research and practices. Furthermore,we summarize the various approaches of drone remote sensing to surveying forests, mapping canopy gaps, measuring forest canopy height, tracking forest wildfires, and supporting intensive forest management. The benefits of drone remote sensing include low material and operational costs, flexible control of spatial and temporal resolution,high-intensity data collection, and the absence of risk to crews. The current forestry applications of drone remote sensing are still at an experimental stage, but they are expected to expand rapidly. 4Genetic parameter estimates for growth traits at early stage of Pacific abalone,Haliotis discus hannai Ino显示文摘Heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated for juvenile growth traits of Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino.The estimates were calculated from shell length and shell width measurements on progeny resulting from 12 half-sib families and 36 full-sib families obtained using artificial fertilization of mating three females to each male.The measurements were taken at 10,20 and 30 d after fertilization.It was found that heritability estimates based on sire component ranged from 0.23 to 0.36 for shell length and 0.21 to 0.32 for shell width.Heritability estimates from dam component were larger than those from sire component at three ages,indicating presence of maternal effects,non-additive genetic effects and common environmental effects.Phenotypic correlations were significant at three ages(P < 0.05),with values of 0.92,0.93 and 0.92,respectively.Genetic correlations from the paternal half-sib correlation analysis were highly positive at three ages,with values of 0.50,0.78 and 0.81,respectively.The results suggest that selective breeding is an effective approach to improving growth traits of Pacific abalone stocks.DENG Yuewen LIU Xiao ZHANG Guofan ZHAO Hongen 2007Acta Oceanologica Sinica2007,26,5:13
5A commentary review on the use of normalized diff erence vegetation index(NDVI)in the era of popular remote sensing显示文摘The Normalized Diff erence Vegetation Index(NDVI),one of the earliest remote sensing analytical products used to simplify the complexities of multi-spectral imagery,is now the most popular index used for vegetation assessment.This popularity and widespread use relate to how an NDVI can be calculated with any multispectral sensor with a visible and a near-IR band.Increasingly low costs and weights of multispectral sensors mean they can be mounted on satellite,aerial,and increasingly—Unmanned Aerial Systems(UAS).While studies have found that the NDVI is effective for expressing vegetation status andquantified vegetation attributes,its widespread use and popularity,especially in UAS applications,carry inherent risks of misuse with end users who received little to no remote sensing education.This article summarizes the progress of NDVI acquisition,highlights the areas of NDVI application,and addresses the critical problems and considerations in using NDVI.Detailed discussion mainly covers three aspects:atmospheric eff ect,saturation phenomenon,and sensor factors.The use of NDVI can be highly eff ective as long as its limitations and capabilities are understood.This consideration is particularly important to the UAS user community.Sha Huang Lina Tang Joseph P.Hupy Yang Wang Guofan Shao 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,1:12
6The roles of a decision support system in applying forest ecosystem management in Northeast China显示文摘Forest ecosystems provide a variety of services and forest ecosystem management (FEM) is an effective approach to maximize the services. Because of the complexity of forest ecosystems, the applications of FEM can be facilitated with decision support systems (DSS) that recognize and incorporate ecological and socio-economic variables. With the rapid development of computation and information technologies, DSS have been advanced in many ways. Traditional forest management within a forestry unit in China is planned on a yearly basis. The planning itself remains primarily a verbal concept as there are no quantitative decision-support tools available to translate the concept into forest management actions. For the purposes of FEM at the management level, a forest management DFF, FORESTAR(R), has been developed under a framework of geographic information system (GIS) and forest models. 7Single-shot lensless imaging with fresnel zone aperture and incoherent illumination显示文摘Lensless imaging eliminates the need for geometric isomorphism between a scene and an image while allowing the construction of compact,lightweight imaging systems.However,a challenging inverse problem remains due to the low reconstructed signal-to-noise ratio.Current implementations require multiple masks or multiple shots to denoise the reconstruction.We propose single-shot lensless imaging with a Fresnel zone aperture and incoherent illumination.By using the Fresnel zone aperture to encode the incoherent rays in wavefront-like form,the captured pattern has the same form as the inline hologram.Since conventional backpropagation reconstruction is troubled by the twin-image problem,we show that the compressive sensing algorithm is effective in removing this twin-image artifact due to the sparsity in natural scenes.The reconstruction with a significantly improved signal-to-noise ratio from a single-shot image promotes a camera architecture that is flat and reliable in its structure and free of the need for strict calibration.Jiachen Wu Hua Zhang Wenhui Zhang Guofan Jin Liangcai Cao George Barbastathis 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:8
8Effects of effective population size on the F_2 growth and survival of bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians (Lamarck)显示文摘In 2002, six cohorts of broodstock bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians (Ne=1, 2, 10, 30, 50 and control) were randomly chosenfrom a population of bay scallop to produce offspring. After one year rearing, with the progeny matured, the similar experiment wasdone to produce the F2 generation. To determine the magnitude of Ne effects, the growth and survival rates in larvae and adult of six F2groups were compared. Results showed that inbreeding depression existed not only in the Ne=l group but also in the Ne=2 group. Thegrowth and survival rates of the two groups were significantly lower than those of the other groups (Ne=10, 30, 50, control), and therewere no significant differences among the latter (P>0.05). At the same time, the amount of depression in the Ne=1 group was signifi-cantly higher than that of the Ne=2 group (P<0.05). These results indicated that the low effective population size (Ne), which increasesthe possibility of inbreeding, could lead to some harmful effects on the offspring. So it is essential to maintain a high level of Ne incommercial seed production. 9Construction of a full bacterial artificial chromosome(BAC) library of Oryza sativa genome显示文摘We have constructed a full BAC library for the superior eaxly indica variety of OryZa sativa, Guang Lu Ai4. The MAX Efficiency DHlOB with increased stabilltyof inserts was used as BAC host cells. The potent pBelo BACII with double selection markers was used as cloning vector. The cloning efficiency we have reached was as high as 98%, and the transformation efficiency was raised up to 1Oo transformants / pg of large fragment DNA. The BAC recombinant transformants were picked at random and analyzed for the size of inserts, which turned out to be of 120 kb in length on average. We have obtained more than 20,000 such BAC clones. According to conventional probabillty equation, they covered the entire rice genome of 420,000 kb in length. The entire length of inserts of the library obtained has the 5- to 6- fold coverage of the genome. 10The progress of operational forest fire monitoring with infrared remote sensing显示文摘Forest wildfires pose significant and growing threats to human safety, wildlife habitat, regional economies and global climate change. It is crucial that forest fires be subject to timely and accurate monitoring by forest fire managers and other stake-holders. Measurement by spaceborne equipment has become a practical and appealing method to monitor the occurrence and development of forest wildfires. Here we present an overview of the principles and case studies of forest fire monitoring(FFM) with satelliteand drone-mounted infrared remote sensing(IRRS). This review includes four types of FFM-relevant IRRS algorithms: bi-spectral methods, fixed threshold methods, spatial contextual methods, and multi-temporal methods. The spatial contextual methods are presented in detail since they can be applied easily with commonly available satellite IRRS data, including MODIS, VIIRS, and Landsat 8 OLI. This review also evaluates typical cases of FFM using NOAAAVHRR, EOS-MODIS, S-NPP VIIRS, Landsat 8 OLI,MSG-SEVIRI, and drone infrared data. To better implement IRRS applications in FFM, it is important to develop accurate forest masks, carry out systematic comparative studies of various forest fire detection systems(known as forest fire products), and improve methods for assessing the accuracy of forest fire detection. 11Digitally determining forest inventory units with an ecological classification system显示文摘Management-level forest resource data in China were obtained with a combination of two forest inventories. However, inconsistencies in the spatial attributes of forest data vary between the two inventory types and between two inventories of the same type. The inconsistencies make it inconvenient for long-term forest management planning with digital technologies. Ecological Land Types (ELTs) and Ecological Land Type Phases (ELTPs) have been mapped in selected forestry regions in northeast China, where important forest industries are located. The boundaries of ELTs are determined by geomorphic conditions, which are quantified by Digital Elevation Models (DEM); ELTPs are classified by overlaying ELTs with forest vegetation data layers that are obtained with both remotely sensed and ground data. The ELTPs represent the divisions of land in terms of both natural and human-induced forest conditions, and therefore they are reliable units for forest inventories and management. This paper introduces a case study for digitally determining forest inventory units in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, northeast China. 12A density-dependent matrix model and its applications in optimizing harvest schemes显示文摘Based on temporal data collected from 36 re-measured plots, transition probabilities of trees from a diameter class to a higher class were analyzed for the broadleaved-Korean pine forest in the Changbai Mountains. It was found that the transition probabilities were related not only to diameter size but also to the total basal area of trees with the diameter class. This paper demonstrates the development of a density-dependent matrix model, DM2, and a series of simulations with it for forest stands with different conditions under different harvest schemes. After validations with independent field data, this model proved a suitable tool for optimization analysis of harvest schemes on computers. The optimum harvest scheme(s) can be determined by referring to stand growth, total timbers harvested, and size diversity changes over time. Three user-friendly interfaces were built with a forest management decision support system FORESTAR(R) for easy operations of DM2 by forest managers. 13Mapping forest fire risk zones with spatial data and principal component analysis显示文摘By integrating forest inventory data with remotely sensed data, new data layers for factors that affect forest fire potentials were generated for Baihe Forestry Bureau in Jilin Province of China. The principle component analysis was used to sort out the relationships between forest fire potentials and environmental factors. The classifications of these factors were performed with GIS, generating three maps: a fuel-based fire risk map, a topography-based fire risk map, and an anthropogenic-factor fire risk map. These three maps were then synthesized to generate the final fire risk map. The linear regression method was used to analyze the relationship between an area-weighted value of forest fire risks and the frequency of historical forest fires at each forest farm. 14Quantifying soil erosion with GIS-based RUSLE under different forest management options in Jianchang Forest Farm显示文摘Quantitatively estimating soil erosion with an integration of geographic information system (GIS) and the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) under four different exposed soil proportion scenarios caused by forest management practices was studied at Jianchang Forest Farm. The GIS provided means of input data generation required by RUSLE model and allowed a spatial assessment of the erosion hazard over the study area. Four exposed soil proportion scenarios of 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% were tested with the GIS-based RUSLE model to evaluate soil erosion hazard. 15Experimental evaluation of heterobeltiosis and heterosis between two populations of Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino显示文摘A2×2 factorial cross between two populations of Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino,collected separately from Dalian(D)in China and Miyagi(M)in Japan,was conducted to compare performances in fertilization rate,hatching rate,metamorphosis rate and growth at days 20,43,160 and 330 between purebreds(DD and MM)and crossbreds(DM and MD)and investigate the magnitude of heterobeltiosis(better parent)and heterosis(mid-parent).Heterobeltiosis and heterosis for all the traits analyzed were evidently different between crossbreds DM and MD.Heterobeltiosis in the crossbred DM varied among traits,with values of 2.5% for the fertilization rate,2.2% for the hatching rate,-1.9% for the metamorphosis rate and 7.4% for the growth at the day 330.The crossbred DM displayed positive heterotic values for fertilization rate(5.4%),hatching rate(7.4%),metamorphosis rate(7.6%)and growth(12.0%)at the day 330.However,both heterobeltiosis and heterosis for all the traits in the crossbred MD were negative except those for the growth at days 20 and 43.The results indicate the importance of selecting superior hybrid varieties if the exploitation of hybrid vigor is considered in the Pacific abalone breeding program.DENG Yuewen LIU Xiao WU Fucun ZHANG Guofan 2008Acta Oceanologica Sinica2008,27,4:3
16Modeling the Adverse Impact of Rainstorms on a Regional Transport Network显示文摘Cities are centers of socioeconomic activities,and transport networks carry cargoes and passengers from one city to another. However, transport networks are influenced by meteorological hazards, such as rainstorms,hurricanes, and fog. Adverse weather impacts can easily spread over a network. Existing models evaluating such impacts usually neglect the transdisciplinary nature of approaches for dealing with this problem. In this article, a mesoscopic mathematical model is proposed to quantitatively assess the adverse impact of rainstorms on a regional transport network in northern China by measuring the reduction in traffic volume. The model considers four factors: direct and secondary impacts of rainstorms, interdependency between network components, and recovery abilities of cities.
