1Coagulation efficiency and flocs characteristics of recycling sludge during treatment of low temperature and micro-polluted water显示文摘Drinking water treatment sludge,characterized as accumulated suspended solids and organic and inorganic matter,is produced in large quantities during the coagulation process.The proper disposal,regeneration or reuse of sludge is,therefore,a significant environmental issue.Reused sludge at low temperatures is an alternative method to enhance traditional coagulation efficiency.In the present study,the recycling mass of mixed sludge and properties of raw water (such as pH and turbidity) were systematically investigated to optimize coagulation efficiency.We determined that the appropriate dosage of mixed sludge was 60 mL/L,effective initial turbidity ranges were below 45.0 NTU,and optimal pH for DOMs and turbidity removal was 6.5-7.0 and 8.0,respectively.Furthermore,by comparing the flocs characteristics with and without recycling sludge,we found that floc structures with sludge were more irregular with average size growth to 64.7 μm from 48.1 μm.Recycling sludge was a feasible and successful method for enhancing pollutants removal,and the more irregular flocs structure after recycling might be caused by breakage of reused flocs and incorporation of powdered activated carbon into larger flocs structure.Applied during the coagulation process,recycling sludge could be significant for the treatment of low temperature and micro-polluted source water.Zhiwei Zhou Yanling Yang Xing Li Wei Gao Heng Liang Guibai Li 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,6:12
2Chemical cleaning of fouled PVC membrane during ultrafiltration of algal-rich water显示文摘Cleaning of hollow-fibre polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane with different chemical reagents after ultrafiltration of algal-rich water was investigated. Among the tested cleaning reagents (NaOH, HCl, EDTA, and NaClO), 100 mg/L NaClO exhibited the best performance (88.4% ± 1.1%) in removing the irreversible fouling resistance. This might be attributed to the fact that NaClO could eliminate almost all the major foulants such as carbohydrate-like and protein-like materials on the membrane surface, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. However, negligible irreversible resistance (1.5% ± 1.0%) was obtained when the membrane was cleaning by 500 mg/L NaOH for 1.0 hr, although the NaOH solution could also desorb a portion of the major foulants from the fouled PVC membrane. Scanning electronic microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses demonstrated that 500 mg/L NaOH could change the structure of the residual foulants on the membrane, making them more tightly attached to the membrane surface. This phenomenon might be responsible for the negligible membrane permeability restoration after NaOH cleaning. 3Impact of dynamic distribution of floc particles on flocculation effect显示文摘Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was used as coagulant and suspended particles in kaolin water. Online instruments including turbidimeter and particle counter were used to monitor the flocculation process. An evaluation model for demonstrating the impact on the flocculation effect was established based on the multiple linear regression analysis method. The parameter of the index weight of channels quantitatively described how the variation of floc particle population in different size ranges cause the decrement of turbidity. The study showed that the floc particles in different size ranges contributed differently to the decrease of turbidity and that the index weight of channel could excellently indicate the impact degree of floc particles dynamic distribution on flocculation effect. 4Towards a better hydraulic cleaning strategy for ultrafiltration membrane fouling by humic acid: Effect of backwash water composition显示文摘As a routine measurement to alleviate membrane fouling, hydraulic cleaning is of great significance for the steady operation of ultrafiltration(UF) systems in water treatment processes. In this work, a comparative study was performed to investigate the effects of the composition of backwash water on the hydraulic cleaning performance of UF membranes fouled by humic acid(HA). Various types of backwash water, including UF permeate, Milli-Q water, Na Cl solution, CaCl_2 solution and HA solution, were compared in terms of hydraulically irreversible fouling index, total surface tension and residual HA. The results indicated that Milli-Q water backwash was superior to UF permeate backwash in cleaning HA-fouled membranes, and the backwash water containing Na+or HA outperformed Milli-Q water in alleviating HA fouling. On the contrary, the presence of Ca^(2+) in backwash water significantly decreased the backwash efficiency. Moreover, Ca^(2+) played an important role in foulant removal, and the residual HA content closely related to the residual Ca^(2+) content.Mechanism analysis suggested that the backwash process may involve fouling layer swelling, ion exchange, electric double layer release and competitive complexation. 5Fractal Characteristics of Particle Size Distribution in Dynamic Flocculation Process显示文摘This study selected polyaluminum chloride(PAC) coagulant to remove suspended particles in Kaolin suspension solution and used a turbidimeter and particle counter to monitor the flocculation process online and collected the experiment data. The experiments were conducted to study the dynamic distribution characteristics of suspended particles under different hydrodynamic conditions. The results show the self-similarity and scale invariance of particle size distribution. The study further proposed the concept of fractal dimension of particle size distribution and found out that fractal dimension changed in a similar way as residual turbidity did and could excellently indicate the variation of coagulation effect. 6Application of response surface methodology to the chemical cleaning process of ultrafiltration membrane显示文摘A numerical model was established to predict and optimise the chemical cleaning process of Polyvinylidene Fluoride(PVDF)Ultra filtration(UF)membranes with the results from the experiment that applied the Response Surface Method(RSM)and Central Composite Design(CCD).The factors considered in the experimental design were sodium hydroxide(NaOH)concentration,sodium hypochlorite concentration(NaClO),citric acid concentration and cleaning duration.The interactions between the factors were investigated with the numerical model.Humic acid(20 mg·L-1)was used as the model foulant,and chemical enhanced back flush(CEB)was employed to simulate the chemical cleaning process.The concentrations of sodium hydroxide,sodium hypochlorite,citric acid and cleaning duration tested during the experiments were in the range of 0.1%–0.3%,100–300 mg·L-1,1%–3%and 0.5–1.5 h,respectively.Among the variables,the sodium hypochlorite concentration and the cleaning duration showed a positive relationship involving the increased ef ficiency of the chemical cleaning.The chemical cleaning ef ficiency was hardly improved with increasing concentrations of sodium hydroxide.However,the data was sharply decreased when at a low level of sodium hydroxide concentration.In total,54 sets of cleaning schemes with 80%to 100%cleaning ef ficiency were observed with the RSM model after calibration.Caihong Wang Aishu Wei Hao Wu Fangshu Qu Weixiong Chen Heng Liang Guibai Li 2016Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,5:4
7Co-application of energy uncoupling and ultrafiltration in sludge treatment:Evaluations of sludge reduction,supernatant recovery and membrane fouling control显示文摘Energy uncoupling is often used for sludge reduction because it is easy to operate and does not require a significant amount of extra equipments(i.e.no additional tank required).However,over time the supernatant extracted using this method can deteriorate,ultimately requiring further treatment.The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using a low-pressure ultrafiltration membrane process for sludge water recovery after the sludge had undergone an energy uncoupling treatment(using 3,3’,4’,5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide(TCS)).Energy uncoupling was found to break apart sludge floe by reducing extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)and adenosine triphosphate(ATP)content.Analysis of supernatant indicated that when energy uncoupling and membrane filtration were coapplied and the TCS dosage was below 30 mg/L,there was no significant deterioration in organic component removal.However,ammonia and phosphate concentrations were found to increase as the concentration of TCS added increased.Additionally,due to low sludge concentrations and EPS contents,addition of 30-60 mg/L TCS during sludge reduction increased the permeate flux(two times higher than the control)and decreased the hydraulic reversible and cake layer resistances.In contrast,high dosage of TCS aggravated membrane fouling by forming compact fouling layers.In general,this study found that the co-application of energy uncoupling and membrane filtration processes represents an effective alternative method for simultaneous sludge reduction and sludge supernatant recovery.An Ding Yingxue Zhao Zhongsen Yan Langming Bai Haiyang Yang Heng Liang Guibai Li Nanqi Ren 2020Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2020,14,4:3
8Impact of total organic carbon and chlorine to ammonia ratio on nitrification in a bench-scale drinking water distribution system显示文摘Nitrification occurs in chloraminated drinking water systems and is affected by water quality parameters.The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of total organic carbon and chlorine to ammonia ratio on nitrification potential in a simulated drinking water distribution system as during chloramination.The occurrence of nitrification and activity of nitrifying bacteria was primarily monitored using four rotating annular bioreactors(RAB)with different chlorine to ammonia ratios and total organic carbon(TOC)levels.The results indicated that nitrification occurred despite at a low influent concentration of ammonia,and a high concentration of nitrite nitrogen was detected in the effluent.The study illustrated that reactors 1(R1)and 3(R3),with higher TOC levels,produced more nitrite nitrogen,which was consistent with the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(AOB)counts,and was linked to a relatively more rapid decay of chloramines in comparison to their counterparts(R2 and R4).The AOB and HPC counts were correlated during the biofilm formation with the establishment of nitrification.Biofilm AOB abundance was also higher in the high TOC reactors compared with the low TOC reactors.The chlorine to ammonia ratio did not have a significant impact on the occurrence of nitrification.Bulk water with a high TOC level supported the occurrence of nitrification,and AOB development occurred at all examined chlorine to ammonia dose ratios(3:1 or 5:1).Yongji ZHANG Lingling ZHOU Guo ZENG Huiping DENG Guibai LI 2010Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2010,4,4:3
