| 16 | Sharp differentiation on the performance of plant functional groups across natural edges显示文摘Aims Gallery forests within grasslands have natural edges with open envi-ronments and offer a unique opportunity to examine how species performances vary across environmental gradients.Here,we asked if demographic rates of tree functional groups varied along the edge,if we could explain differences in plant strategies and performance through functional traits and which traits increase growth and sur-vival in natural edges.Methods We examine mortality and recruitment within the first 10 m of nat-ural edges of eight gallery forests using demographic data from five annual inventories.We defined a priori plant strategies using tree functional groups:light demanding,pioneer and shade tolerant.Important Findings The shade-tolerant group had the lowest mortality rates and basal area(BA)loss,while pioneer and light-demanding species had similar behavior for these rates.The survival and growth of functional groups were affected differently by the distance from the edge.The pioneer group survived more near the edge,while light-demanding and shade-tolerant groups toward the forest interior.All groups had higher growth in the grassland.Those differences could be explained by functional traits since most species have an acquisition strategy:higher specific leaf area and growth,lower leaf dry matter con-tent,lighter stem density,deeper crowns and less slender stems.Acquisitive traits enhanced growth.However,mortality selected both strategies,but in distinct edge’s zones.Our study showed that the high diversity found in natural edges can be explained by a niche and functional perspective,where differences in functional traits lead to differential performance along the environmental gradient. | Evelyn da Fonseca Alecrim Bragion Gabriela Aparecida Oliveira Coelho Flávia Freire de Siqueira Maria Uriarte Eduardo van den Berg | 2019 | Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Co-inoculation of selected nodule endophytic rhizobacterial strains with Rhizobium tropici promotes plant growth and controls damping off in common bean显示文摘Production of common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris)is limited by the occurrence of damping off(rhizoctoniosis),which is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani.However,the co-inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR)involved in biological control along with diatomic nitrogen(N2)-fixing rhizobia can enhance N nutrition and increase production.In this context,finding microorganisms with synergistic effects that perform these two roles is of fundamental importance to ensure adequate yield levels.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of co-inoculation of nodule endophytic strains of the genera Bacillus,Paenibacillus,Burkholderia,and Pseudomonas with Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899,an N2-fixing rhizobial strain,on the biocontrol of damping off and growth promotion in common bean plants.Greenhouse experiments were conducted under axenic conditions using the common bean cultivar Pérola.The first experiment evaluated the potential of the 14 rhizobacterial strains,which were inoculated alone or in combination with CIAT 899,for the control of R.solani.The second experiment evaluated the ability of these 14 rhizobacterial strains to promote plant growth with three manners of N supply:co-inoculation with CIAT 899 at low mineral N supply(5.25 mg N mL^-1),low mineral N supply(5.25 mg N mL^-1),and high mineral N supply(52.5 mg N mL^-1).The use of rhizobacteria combined with rhizobia contributed in a synergistic manner to the promotion of growth and the control of damping off in the common bean.Co-inoculation of the strains UFLA 02-281/03-18(Pseudomonas sp.),UFLA 02-286(Bacillus sp.),and UFLA 04-227(Burkholderia fungorum)together with CIAT 899 effectively controlled damping off.For the common bean,mineral N supply can be replaced by the co-inoculation of CIAT 899 with plant growth-promoting strains UFLA 02-281/02-286/02-290/02-293.Nodule endophytes UFLA02-281/02-286 are promising for co-inoculation with CIAT 899 in the common bean,promoting synergy with rhizobial inoculation and protection against disease. | Linnajara DE VASCONCELOS MARTINS FERREIRA Fernanda DE CARVALHO Júlia FONSECA COLOMBO ANDRADE Damiany PáDUA OLIVEIRA Flávio Henrique VASCONCELOS DE MEDEIROS Fatima Maria DE SOUZA MOREIRA | 2020 | Pedosphere2020,30,1: | 0 |

| 19 | Subversion of cellular stress responses by poxviruses显示文摘Cellular stress responses are powerful mechanisms that prevent and cope with the accumulation of macromolecular damage in the cells and also boost host defenses against pathogens. Cells can initiate either protective or destructive stress responses depending, to a large extent, on the nature and duration of the stressing stimulus as well as the cell type. The productive replication of a virus within a given cell places inordinate stress on the metabolism machinery of the host and, to assure the continuity of its replication, many viruses have developed ways to modulate the cell stress responses. Poxviruses are among the viruses that have evolved a large number of strategies to manipulate host stress responses in order to control cell fate and enhance their replicative success. Remarkably, nearly every step of the stress responses that is mounted during infection can be targeted by virally encoded functions. The fine-tuned interactions between poxviruses and the host stress responses has aided virologists to understand specific aspects of viral replication; has helped cell biologists to evaluate the role of stress signaling in the uninfected cell; and has tipped immunologists on how these signals contribute to alert the cells against pathogen invasionand boost subsequent immune responses.
