3Prevalence and determinants of active trachoma among preschool-aged children in Dembia District,Northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Trachoma is an infectious eye disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, which is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. In areas where trachoma is endemic, active trachoma is common among preschool-aged children, with varying magnitude. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of active trachoma and associated risk factors among preschool-aged children in Dembia District, northwest Ethiopia. Methods:A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among preschool-aged children of northwest Ethiopia.Multistage systematic random sampling was used to select 695 subjects.Trained clinical optometrists subjected each child to an ocular examination and assessed the presence of active trachoma.Face to face interview using pretested and structured questionnaire were conducted to collect data on possible risk factors.Trachoma cases were graded following a World Health Organization simplified grading scheme. All statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS software version 20.Adjusted odds ratios(aORs)with 95%confidence intervals(CIs)were used to identify factors associated with active trachoma. Results:Of the 681 preschool-aged children studied,18%(95%CI:15.4%-21.1%)had a prevalence of active trachoma.Children who had clean faces(absence of nasal and ocular discharges)had a lower chance of having active trachoma[aOR=0.55,95%CI:0.37-0.82].The odds of having active trachoma decreased with an increase in the distance to a water point[aOR=0.51,95%CI:0.33-0.78].Similarly,no or poor utilization of liquid waste disposal in the child’s household was associated with an increased chance of having active trachoma[aOR=3.83,95%CI:1.26-11.61].Conclusion:The prevalence of active trachoma in these preschool-aged children was found to be high and needs special interventions that focus on educating families about proper face washing, liquid waste disposal, and improving safe water supply near the households.Ayanaw Tsega Ferede Abel Fekadu Dadi Amare Tariku Akilew Awoke Adane 2017Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1:1
Abebaw Jember Ferede Lena Wettergren Kerstin Erlandsson Lemma Derseh Gezie Helena Lindgren Biftu Geda 2023International Journal of Nursing Sciences2023,10,3:0
5Trends and spatial distributions of HIV prevalence in Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Globally,by the end of 2018,37.9 million people were living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest burden with an estimated 71%of the global total. In Ethiopia,an estimated 715404 people were living with HIV in 2015 and this increased to 722248 in 2017.This study was to explore the trends and spatial distributions of HIV cases in Ethiopia. Methods:In this study,we explored the spatial and temporal distribution of persons living with HIV in Ethiopia using data from 2005,2011,and 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys(EDHS).Geographic information system(Getis-Ord Gi*statistics)and spatial scan statistics(SaTScan)were used for exploratory and confirmatory spatial analyses respectively. Results:The overall prevalence of HIV in Ethiopia unveiled inconsistent trends, with the majority of areas showing decreasing trends.Hot spot clusters exhibited in all the three surveys, which include areas where Amhara,Afar and Tigray regions share neighbourhoods. In 2005 regionally,Gambella,Addis Ababa, and Harari had the highest prevalence at 6.0,47 and 3.5%,respectively.While in the 2016 survey the highest prevalence(4.8%)was observed in Gambella regional state followed by Addis Ababa(3.4%).Conclusions:The distribution of HIV infection in Ethiopia is not random in all the three EDHS surveys.High clusters of HIV cases were consistently observed in Addis Ababa and neighbouring areas of the Afar Tigray and Amhara regional states and central Oromia. This analysis revealed that there are still areas which need studying with respect to the epidemic of HIV.In this regard Addis Ababa, certain areas of Amhara regional state, large areas of Afar region and central Oromia require special attention.Getiye Dejenu Kibret Aster Ferede Cheru Tesema Leshargie Fasil Wagnew Daniel Bekele Ketema Animut Alebel 2019Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,5:0
6Wild foods(plants and animals)in the green famine belt of Ethiopia:Do they contribute to household resilience to seasonal food insecurity?显示文摘Background:The role of wild foods in combating problems of food shortage is paramount. However, existing approaches to combat food insecurity shock have generally focused on reducing vulnerability via increasing productivity of domesticated foods. In contrast, approaches that enhance resilience mainly through wild food sources have been less focused. This study examined the contribution of wild foods to household resilience to food insecurity in the green famine belt of Ethiopia. Methods:A cross-sectional survey of 220 households was conducted using a structured questionnaire, key informant interviews, and semi-participant observations.Factor analysis was run using SPSS to analyze data.Correlation analysis was used to examine the direction and strength of association between wild foods and the income and food access(IFA),a latent proxy indicator of resilience.Cross-tabulation was also run to determine the proportion of households in each ethno-culture group under each resilience category. Results:The mean amount of wild foods obtained by households was 156.61 kg per household per annum. This was about 5%and 9%of,gross and,net food available from all sources respectively.Wild foods contributed well to household resilience as the factor loading(Factor2=0.467) was large enough and were significantly correlated with IFA(r=0.174).Wild vegetables were the most collected and consumed type of wild foods constituting 52.4%of total amount of wild foods. The total amount of wild foods was smaller than that of domesticated sources of food. The majority of households(38.6%) reported 'reduced source of wild foods' as a reason for this.Smaller proportion of the indigenous(11.2%) than the non-indigenous(34.1%) ethno-culture group reported one or more reasons for their lower level of dependence on wild foods. Conclusion:From the study we concluded that wild foods had important contribution to households' resilience to food shortages and are likely to continue to contribute in the future, this being more to indigenous than non-indigenous ethno-culture group. Therefore,a resilience building policy that incorporates wild foods should be adopted, and research that aims at exploring their current status and future prospect are urgently required.daie ferede guyu wolde-tsadik muluneh 2016Forest Ecosystems2016,3,1:0
