1Scour and flow field around a spur dike in a 90° bend显示文摘Spur dike is an important element in river training that creates rapid variations in flow field, sediment transport and bed topography. The mechanism of flow and sediment transport in a channel bend is very complex, especially when a spur dike is constructed in a bend. Most of previous investigations on flow behavior and scour around spur dike were carried out in straight channels. In this paper results of experiments on flow field and scour around a spur dike in a 90 degree channel bend are presented. Sand with uniform grain size was used as the bed material. Experiments were conducted for different locations and different lengths of spur dikes at the bend with different values of discharge. The three dimensional flow fields around a spur dike were investigated. 2Alginate and alginate composites for biomedical applications显示文摘Alginate is an edible heteropolysaccharide that abundantly available in the brown seaweed and the capsule of bacteria such as Azotobacter sp.and Pseudomonas sp.Owing to alginate gel forming capability,it is widely used in food,textile and paper industries;and to a lesser extent in biomedical applications as biomaterial to promote wound healing and tissue regeneration.This is evident from the rising use of alginate-based dressing for heavily exuding wound and their mass availability in the market nowadays.However,alginate also has limitation.When in contact with physiological environment,alginate could gelate into softer structure,consequently limits its potential in the soft tissue regeneration and becomes inappropriate for the usage related to load bearing body parts.To cater this problem,wide range of materials have been added to alginate structure,producing sturdy composite materials.For instance,the incorporation of adhesive peptide and natural polymer or synthetic polymer to alginate moieties creates an improved composite material,which not only possesses better mechanical properties compared to native alginate,but also grants additional healing capability and promote better tissue regeneration.In addition,drug release kinetic and cell viability can be further improved when alginate composite is used as encapsulating agent.In this review,preparation of alginate and alginate composite in various forms(fibre,bead,hydrogel,and 3D-printed matrices)used for biomedical application is described first,followed by the discussion of latest trend related to alginate composite utilization in wound dressing,drug delivery,and tissue engineering applications.Raha Ahmad Raus Wan Mohd Fazli Wan Nawawi Ricca Rahman Nasaruddin 2021Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2021,16,3:11
3Inducible nitric oxide synthetase genotype and Helicobacter pylori infection affect gastric cancer risk显示文摘AIM:To investigate the association of the inducible nitric oxide synthetase(iNOS) C150T polymorphism with Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) infection and gastric cancer(GC) risk in Iran.METHODS:In order to determine whether there was a correlation between iNOS genotype and GC in Iran,we conducted a case-control study using samples from 329 individuals.For each sample,the C150T iNOS polymorphism was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and restriction digestion.Patients were grouped by cancer presence,demographic and behavior characteristics,and H.pylori infection status.Statistical tests were conducted to determine whether any behavioral factors or a particular iNOS genotype was associated with GC in the study population.RESULTS:In this population,we found that smoking,hot beverage consumption,a familial history of GC and H.pylori infection status were significantly associated with GC development(P = 0.015,P < 0.001,P = 0.0034,and P < 0.015,respectively).The distribution of the C150T iNOS genotypes among the two study groups was not statistically significant alone,but was impacted by H.pylori infection status.When compared to the non-H.pylori infected group,cancer patients who had a heterozygous CT genotype and were also infected with H.pylori were 2.1 times more at risk of developing GC [odds ratio(OR) = 2.1,P = 0.03] while those with a homozygous TT genotype and infected with H.pylori were 5.0 times more at risk of developing GC(OR = 5.0,P = 0.029).In contrast,this association was not seen in patients in the control group.CONCLUSION:A CT or TT polymorphism at position 150 in the iNOS gene significantly increases the risk of GC and may be a marker for GC susceptibility.Alireza Rafiei Vahid Hosseini Ghasem Janbabai Bahman Fazli Abulghasem Ajami Zahra Hosseini-khah Jeremy J Gilbreath D Scott Merrell 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,35:4
4Spatial assessment of forest cover and land-use changes in the Hindu-Kush mountain ranges of northern Pakistan显示文摘Anthropogenic activities and natural processes are continuously altering the mountainous environment through deforestation, forest degradation and other land-use changes. It is highly important to assess, monitor and forecast forest cover and other land-use changes for the protection and conservation of mountainous environment. The present study deals with the assessment of forest cover and other land-use changes in the mountain ranges of Dir Kohistan in northern Pakistan, using high resolution multi-temporal SPOT-5 satellite images. The SPOT-5 satellite images of years 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 were acquired and classified into land-cover units. In addition, forest cover and land-use change detection map was developed using the classified maps of 2004 and 2013. The classified maps were verified through random field samples and Google Earth imagery(Quick birds and SPOT-5). The results showed that during the period 2004 to 2013 the area of forest land decreased by 6.4%, however, area of range land and agriculture land have increased by 22.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Similarly, barren land increased by 1.1%, whereas, area of snow cover/glacier is significantly decreased by 21.3%.
