| 1 | Spatial cloud computing: how can the geospatial sciences use and help shape cloud computing?显示文摘The geospatial sciences face grand information technology(IT)challenges in the twenty-first century:data intensity,computing intensity,concurrent access intensity and spatiotemporal intensity.These challenges require the readiness of a computing infrastructure that can:(1)better support discovery,access and utilization of data and data processing so as to relieve scientists and engineers of IT tasks and focus on scientific discoveries;(2)provide real-time IT resources to enable real-time applications,such as emergency response;(3)deal with access spikes;and(4)provide more reliable and scalable service for massive numbers of concurrent users to advance public knowledge.The emergence of cloud computing provides a potential solution with an elastic,on-demand computing platform to integrateobservation systems,parameter extracting algorithms,phenomena simulations,analytical visualization and decision support,and to provide social impact and user feedbackthe essential elements of the geospatial sciences.We discuss the utilization of cloud computing to support the intensities of geospatial sciences by reporting from our investigations on how cloud computing could enable the geospatial sciences and how spatiotemporal principles,the kernel of the geospatial sciences,could be utilized to ensure the benefits of cloud computing.Four research examples are presented to analyze how to:(1)search,access and utilize geospatial data;(2)configure computing infrastructure to enable the computability of intensive simulation models;(3)disseminate and utilize research results for massive numbers of concurrent users;and(4)adopt spatiotemporal principles to support spatiotemporal intensive applications.The paper concludes with a discussion of opportunities and challenges for spatial cloud computing(SCC). | Chaowei Yang Michael Goodchild Qunying Huang Doug Nebert Robert Raskin Yan Xu Myra Bambacus Daniel Fay | 2011 | International Journal of Digital Earth2011,4,4: | 55 |
| 2 | Cultured meat from muscle stem cells: A review of challenges and prospects显示文摘Growing muscle tissue in culture from animal stem cells to produce meat theoretically eliminates the need to sacrifice animals. So-called 'cultured' or 'synthetic' or 'in vitro' meat could in theory be constructed with different characteristics and be produced faster and more efficiently than traditional meat. The technique to generate cultured muscle tissues from stem cells was described long ago, but has not yet been developed for the commercial production of cultured meat products. The technology is at an early stage and prerequisites of implementation include a reasonably high level of consumer acceptance, and the development of commercially-viable means of large scale production. Recent advancements in tissue culture techniques suggest that production may be economically feasible, provided it has physical properties in terms of colour, flavour, aroma, texture and palatability that are comparable to conventional meat. Although considerable progress has been made during recent years, important issues remain to be resolved, including the characterization of social and ethical constraints, the fine-tuning of culture conditions, and the development of culture media that are cost-effective and free of animal products. | 3 | Changes in runoff and sediment load from major Chinese rivers to the Pacific Ocean over the period 1955-2010显示文摘Changes in runoff and sediment loads to the Pacific Ocean from 10 major Chinese rivers are presented in this paper.To quantitatively assess trends in runoff and sediment loads,a parameter called the 'Trend Ratio 7'' has been defined in this paper.To summarize total runoff and sediment load from these rivers,data from 17 gauging stations for the duration 1955 to 2010 has been standardized,and the missing data have been interpolated by different approaches according to specific conditions.Over the observed 56-year study period,there is a quite stable change in total runoff.Results show that the mean annual runoff flux entering the Pacific Ocean from these rivers is approximately 1,425billion cubic meters.It is found that all northern rivers within semi-arid and transitional zones including the Songhua,Liaohe,Haihe,Yellow and Huaihe rivers present declining trends in water discharge.Annual runoff in all southern rivers within humid zones including the Yangtze,Qiantang,Minjiang,Pearl and Lancang rivers docs not change much,except for the Qiantang River whose annual runoff slightly increases.The annual sediment loads of all rivers show significant declining trends;the exceptions are the Songhua and Lancang rivers whose annual sediment loads have increasing trends.However,the mean annual sediment flux carried into the Pacific Ocean decreased from 2,026million tonnes to 499 million tonnes over the 56-ycar period.During this time there were 4 distinct decreasing phases.The decrease in annual sediment flux is due to the integrated effects of human activity and climate change.The reduction in sediment flux makes it easy for reservoir operation;however,the decrease in sediment flux also creates problems,such as channel erosion,river bank collapse and the retreat of the delta area. | Cheng LIU Jueyi SUI Yun HE Faye HIRSHFIELD | 2013 | International Journal of Sediment Research2013,28,4: | 16 |
| 4 | Venous thromboembolism in inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘Patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)are at an increased risk for venous thromboembolism(VTE).VTE events carry significant morbidity and mortality,and have been associated with worse outcomes in patients with IBD.Studies have suggested that the hypercoagulable nature of the disease stems from a complex interplay of systems that include the coagulation cascade,natural coagulation inhibitors,fibrinolytic system,endothelium,immune system,and platelets.Additionally,clinical factors that increase the likelihood of a VTE event among IBD patients include older age(though some studies suggest younger patients have a higher relative risk of VTE,the incidence in this population is much lower as compared to the older IBD patient population),pregnancy,active disease,more extensive disease,hospitalization,the use of certain medications such as corticosteroids or tofacitinb,and IBD-related surgeries.Despite the increased risk of VTE among IBD patients and the safety of pharmacologic prophylaxis,adherence rates among hospitalized IBD patients appear to be low.Furthermore,recent data suggests that there is a population of high risk IBD patients who may benefit from post-discharge prophylaxis.This review will provide an overview of patient specific factors that affect VTE risk,elucidate reasons for lack of VTE prophylaxis among hospitalized IBD patients,and focus on recent data describing those at highest risk for recurrent VTE post-hospital discharge. | Kimberly Cheng Adam S Faye | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,12: | 14 |

| 10 | Urogenital schistosomiasis and soiltransmitted helminthiasis(STH)in Cameroon:An epidemiological update at Barombi Mbo and Barombi Kotto crater lakes assessing prospects for intensified control interventions显示文摘Background:The crater lakes of Barombi Mbo and Barombi Kotto are well-known transmission foci of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis having had several important control initiatives previously.To collect contemporary epidemiological information,a cross-sectional survey was undertaken inclusive of:signs and symptoms of disease,individual treatment histories,local water,sanitation and hygiene(WASH)-related factors and malacological surveillance,with molecular characterisation of specimens.Methods:At each lake,a community cross-sectional survey was undertaken using a combination of stool and urine parasitological sampling,and interview with pro-forma questionnaires.A total of 338 children and adults participated.Material from snail and parasite species were characterised by DNA methods.Results:Egg-patent prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis was 8.7%at Barombi Mbo(all light-intensity infections)and 40.1%at Barombi Kotto(21.2%heavy-intensity infections).Intestinal schistosomiasis was absent.At Barombi Kotto,significantly more women reported signs and symptoms associated with female genital schistosomiasis.While there had been extensive recent improvement in WASH-related infrastructure at Barombi Mbo,water contact risk scores were higher among schistosomiasis-infected participants(P<0.001)and at Barombi Kotto in general(P<0.001).Across both lakes,mean prevalence of STH was very low(6.3%)evidencing an impressive decrease of 79.0%over the last decade;neither Strongyloides stercoralis nor Ascaris lumbricoides were found.A total of 29 freshwater sampling sites were inspected for snails,13 in Barombi Mbo and 16 in Barombi Kotto;water chemistry differed significantly(P<0.0001)between lakes for both mean pH(7.9 v.9.6)and mean conductivity(64.3μS v.202.1μS)respectively.Only two Bulinus camerunensis found on the central island of Barombi Kotto were observed to shed schistosome cercariae,but schistosome DNA was later detected in Bulinus sampled from both lakes as well as in Indoplanorbis exustus,an invasive species from Asia.Conclusions:STH is currently at very low levels while urogenital schistosomiasis is of greatest concern at Barombi Kotto.This assessment highlights a unique opportunity for further study of the epidemiological dynamics at these crater lakes,to evaluate future intensified interventions both in terms of gaining and sustaining control at Barombi Kotto or in moving towards local interruption of transmission of both diseases at Barombi Mbo. | Suzy J.Campbell J.Russell Stothard Faye O’Halloran Deborah Sankey Timothy Durant Dieudonne Eloundou Ombede Gwladys Djomkam Chuinteu Bonnie LWebster Lucas Cunningham EJames LaCourse Louis-Albert Tchuem-Tchuente | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 4 |
