| 1 | Synthesis of clay-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron using green tea extract for the removal of phosphorus from aqueous solutions显示文摘This study addresses the synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron(n ZVI) in the presence of natural bentonite(B-n ZVI) using green tea extract. The natural bentonite and B-n ZVI were then applied for the removal of phosphorus from aqueous solutions at various concentrations, p H levels and contact time. The desorption of phosphorus(P) from adsorbents was done immediately after sorption at the maximum initial concentration using the successive dilution method. The characterization of FTIR, SEM, and XRD indicated that n ZVI was successfully loaded to the surface of natural bentonite. The sorption of phosphorus on B-n ZVI was observed to be p H-dependent, with maximum phosphorus removal occurring at the p H range of 2 to 5. The results demonstrate that the maximum sorption capacities of natural bentonite and B-n ZVI were 4.61 and 27.63 mg·g^(-1), respectively.Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich–Peterson models properly described the sorption isotherm data. For either adsorbent, desorption isotherms did not coincide with their corresponding sorption isotherms, suggesting the occurrence of irreversibility and hysteresis. The average percentages of retained phosphorus released from natural bentonite and B-n ZVI were 80% and 9%, respectively. The results indicated that sorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second-order model. | 2 | Functional evaluation of the filtering bleb by ultrasound biomicroscopy after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C显示文摘AIM: To study the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM) in the assessment of the bleb function after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C(MMC). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including all cases had undergone trabeculectomy with MMC 0.2 mg/mL for 3 min. Participants were recruited from the follow-up cases at Department of Ophthalmology, Tanta University in the period from August 2015 to August 2016. Full history taking and ophthalmological examination were performed. Intraocular pressure(IOP) was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry and the history of prescribed postoperative antiglaucoma medications was recorded. Accordingly, the trabeculectomy blebs were divided clinically into successful blebs when the IOP post-operative was ≤18 mmHg without medications. Scanning examination of the filtering bleb using UBM examination was performed at the period from 2 to 36 mo after trabeculectomy(13.6±9.7 m o). RESULTS: This study included 33 trabeculectomy filtering blebs of 25 patients(9 males and 16 females). The mean age of patients was 53.2±14.2 y(range 25-71y). We had 20 eyes with complete success, 9 eyes with qualified success, and 4 eyes with failure after trabeculectomy with MMC. The blebs were classified into successful blebs(IOP ≤18 mmHg without antiglaucoma medications), others were classified into qualified successful and failed blebs. | 3 | Resistance status of main malaria vector, Liston (Diptera:Culicidae) to insecticides in a malaria Endemic Area,Southern Iran显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the susceptibility of Anopheles stephensi(An. stephensi) Liston, the main malaria vector in southern Iran, to WHO recommended insecticides. Methods: Larvae of An. stephensi were collected from three different larval habitats in both urban and rural area of Bandar Abbas city and one rural area in Rudan county southern Iran. WHO standard method was used for evaluation of adult and larval mosquito susceptibility. Bendiocarb, permethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin as insecticide and temephos and chlorpyriphos as larvicide were used at the diagnostic dosages recommended by WHO. Results: Findings of this study showed all larval populations of An. stephensi were completely susceptible to temephos and candidate for resistance to chlorpyriphos. Adult mosquitoes in rural areas of Bandar Abbas city were resistant to pyrethroid and carbamate insecticides. Conclusion: Comparison of the results of this survey with previous studies indicates that the resistance to pyrethroids and carbamates in this malaria endemic region is increasing. Wide use of pesticides in agriculture is certainly effective in increasing resistance.
