TiC-Maraging stainless steel composite:microstructure, mechanical and wear properties显示文摘Particulate TiC reinforced 17-4PH and 465 maraging stainless steel matrix composites were processed by con- ventional powder metallurgy (P/M). TiC-maraging stainless steel composites with theoretical density >97% were produced using conventional P/M. The microstructure, and mechanical and wear properties of the composites were evaluated. The microstructure of the composites consisted of (core-rim structure) spherical and semi-spherical TiC particles depending on the wettability of the matrix with TiC particles. In TiC-maraging stainless steel composites, 465 stainless steel binder phase showed good wettability with TiC particles. Some microcracks appeared in the composites, indicating the presence of ten- sile stresses in the composites produced during sintering. The typical properties, hardness, and bend strength were reported for the composites. After heat treatment and aging, an increase in hardness was observed. The increase in hardness was at- tributed to the aging reaction in maraging stainless steel. The specific wear behavior of the composites strongly depends on the content of TiC particles and their interparticle spacing, and on the heat treatment of the maraging stainless steel. | Akhtar Farid Khadijah Ali Shah Syed Javid Askari | 2006 | Rare Metals2006,25,6: | 6
Development of Si_3N_4/Al composite by pressureless melt infiltration显示文摘Pressureless infiltration process to synthesize Si3N4/Al composite was investigated. Al-2%Mg alloy was infiltrated into Si3N4 and Si3N4 containing 10% Al2O3 preforms in the atmosphere of nitrogen. It is possible to infiltrate Al-2%Mg alloy in Si3N4 and Si3N4 containing 10% Al2O3 preforms. The growth of the dense composite of useful thickness was facilitated by the presence of magnesium powder at the interface and by flowing nitrogen. During infiltration Si3N4 reacted with aluminium to form Si and AlN, the growth of composite was found to proceed in two ways, depending on the Al2O3 content in the initial preform. Firstly, preform without Al2O3 content gives rise to AlN, Al3.27Si0.47 and Al type phases after infiltration. Secondly, perform with 10% Al2O3 content gives rise to AlN-Al2O3 solid solution phase (AlON), MgAl2O4, Al and Si type phases. AlON phase was only present in composite, containing 10% Al2O3 in the Si3N4 preforms before infiltration. | Akhtar Farid | 2006 | 中国有色金属学会会刊:英文版2006,16,3: | 5
Sintering behavior, microstructure and properties of TiC-FeCr hard alloy显示文摘TiC based cermets were produced with FeCr, as a binder, by conventional P/M (powder metallurgy) to near >97% of the theoretical density. Sintering temperature significantly affects the mechanical properties of the composite. The sintering temperature of >1360°C caused severe chemical reaction between TiC particles and the binder phase. In the TiC-FeCr cermets, the mechanical prop- erties did not vary linearly with the carbide content. Optimum mechanical properties were found in the composite containing 57wt% TiC reinforcement, when sintered at 1360°C for 1 h. Use of carbon as an additive enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. Cermets containing carbon as an additive with 49wt% TiC exhibited attractive mechanical properties. The microstructure of the developed composite contained less or no debonding, representing good wettability of the binder with TiC particles. Homogeneous distribution of the TiC particles ensured the presence of isotropic mechanical properties and homogeneous distribution of stresses in the composite. Preliminary experiments for evaluation of the oxidation resistance of FeCr bonded TiC cermets indicate that they are more resistant than WC-Co hardmetals. | Farid Akhtar Shiju Guo Jawid Askari Jianjun Tian | 2007 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2007,14,1: | 3
Microstructure Evolution and Pore Formation Mechanism of Porous TiAl3 Intermetallics via Reactive Sintering显示文摘Porous TiAl_3 intermetallics were fabricated through vacuum reactive sintering from Ti–75 Al at.% elemental powder mixture. The phase compositions, expansion behaviors, pore characteristics and microstructure evolution of TiAl_3 intermetallics were investigated, and the pore formation mechanism was also proposed. It was found that the actual temperature of compacts showed an acute climb from 668 to 1244 °C in 166 s, while the furnace temperature maintained the linear growth of 5 °C/min, which indicated that an obvious thermal explosion(TE) reaction occurred during sintering, and only single-phase TiAl_3 intermetallic was synthesized in TE products. The open porosity increased from 22.2(green compact) to 32.8% after reactive diffusion sintering at 600 °C and rised to 58.7% after TE, then decreased to 51.2% after high-temperature homogenization at 1100 °C. Therefore, TE reaction is the dominated pore formation mechanism of porous TiAl_3 intermetallics. The pore evolution in porous TiAl_3 intermetallics occurred by the following mechanisms:certain intergranular pores remained among powder particles of green compact, then low-temperature sintering resulted in a further increase in porosity due to the Kirkendall effect. Moreover, TE reaction gave rise to a dramatic volume expansion because of the rapid increase in temperature, and high-temperature sintering caused densification and a slight shrinkage. | Xinyang Jiao Xiaohong Wang Peizhong Feng Yanan Liu Laiqi Zhang Farid Akhtar | 2018 | Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2018,31,4: | 3
Self-propagating high temperature synthesis of MoSi_2 matrix composites显示文摘MoSi2 is presently regarded as the most important material for electrical heating and as one with huge potential for high temperature structural uses. MoSi2 and MoSi2 matrix composites were prepared by self-propagating high tempera-ture synthesis (SHS). Pure MoSi2 was obtained and a compound of MoSi2 and WSi2 was synthesized in the form of pre-dominant solid solution (Mo,W)Si2. By adding aluminum of 5.5 at.% to Mo-Si, the crystal structure of MoSi2 changed into a mixture of tetragonal Cllb MoSi2 and hexagonal C40 Mo(Si,Al)2. The (Mo,W)Si2-Mo(Si,Al)2-W(Si,Al)2 composite mate-rials were synthesized by adding aluminum of 5.5 at.% to Mo-W-Si. However, if the amount of the added aluminum was not larger than 2.5 at.%, it did not have any significant effect. SHS is an effective technology for synthesis of MoSi2 and MoSi2 matrix composites. | Akhtar Farid S.H. Islam | 2006 | Rare Metals2006,25,3: | 3
Effect of inner oxidant on self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of MnZn-ferrite powder显示文摘Using KClO3 as an inner oxidant, MnZn-ferrite powder was synthesized by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process in normal air atmosphere. The effects of the inner oxidant on combustion temperature, combustion velocity, microstructure and the phase of the product were investigated by XRD and SEM,respectively. The results show that a highly ferritized powder can be obtained as well as the highest combustion temperature and the highest combustion velocity when the inner oxidant content m equals 54(k-16). | AKHTAR Farid | 2006 | Rare Metals2006,25,z1: | 2

Lubrication effectiveness of composite lubricants during P/M electrostatic die wall lubrication and warm compaction显示文摘The lubrication effectiveness of the composite lubricants, 50wt% ethylene bis-stearamide (EBS) wax + 50wt% graphite and 50wt% EBS wax + 50wt% BN, during the powder metallurgy (P/M) electrostatic die wall lubrication and warm compaction was studied. The results show that the combination of 50wt% EBS wax and 50wt% graphite has excellent lubrication performance, resulting in fairly high green densities, but the mixture of 50wt% EBS wax and 50wt% BN has less beneficial effect. In addition, corresponding die temperatures should be applied when different die wall lubricants are used to achieve the highest green densities. | Farid Akhtar | 2006 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2006,13,6: | 1

Effects of heat treatment on the properties of powder injection molded AlN ceramics显示文摘The effects of two different heat-treatment atmospheres, nitrogen atmosphere and reducing nitrogen atmosphere with carbon,on the properties of Y2O3-doped aluminum nitride(AlN) ceramics were investigated. The AlN powder as a raw material was synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS) and compacts were fabricated by employing powder injection molding technique. The polymer-wax binder consisted of 60 wt.% paraffin wax(PW),35 wt.% polypropylene(PP),and 5 wt.% stearic acid(SA).After the removal of binder, specimens were sintered at 1850°С in nitrogen atmosphere under atmospheric pressure. To improve the thermal conductivity, sintered samples were reheated. The result reveals that the heat-treatment atmosphere has significant effect on the properties and secondary phase of AlN ceramics. The thermal conductivity and density of AlN ceramics reheated in nitrogen gas are 180 W·m-1·K-1 and 3.28 g·cm-3 and the secondary phase is yttrium aluminate. For the sample reheated in reducing nitrogen atmosphere with carbon, the thermal conductivity and density are 173 W·m-1·K-1 and 3.23 g·cm-3,respectively,and the secondary phase is YN. | DU Xueli QIN Mingli Akhtar Farid FENG Peizhong QU Xuanhui | 2008 | Rare Metals2008,27,1: | 1
