1Review on Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Activity and Toxicity Mechanism显示文摘Antibacterial activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles(Zn O-NPs) has received significant interest worldwide particularly by the implementation of nanotechnology to synthesize particles in the nanometer region. Many microorganisms exist in the range from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers. Zn O-NPs exhibit attractive antibacterial properties due to increased specific surface area as the reduced particle size leading to enhanced particle surface reactivity. Zn O is a bio-safe material that possesses photo-oxidizing and photocatalysis impacts on chemical and biological species. This review covered Zn O-NPs antibacterial activity including testing methods, impact of UV illumination, Zn O particle properties(size, concentration, morphology, and defects), particle surface modification, and minimum inhibitory concentration. Particular emphasize was given to bactericidal and bacteriostatic mechanisms with focus on generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) including hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), OH-(hydroxyl radicals), and O2-2(peroxide). ROS has been a major factor for several mechanisms including cell wall damage due to Zn O-localized interaction, enhanced membrane permeability, internalization of NPs due to loss of proton motive force and uptake of toxic dissolved zinc ions.These have led to mitochondria weakness, intracellular outflow, and release in gene expression of oxidative stress which caused eventual cell growth inhibition and cell death. In some cases, enhanced antibacterial activity can be attributed to surface defects on Zn O abrasive surface texture. One functional application of the Zn O antibacterial bioactivity was discussed in food packaging industry where Zn O-NPs are used as an antibacterial agent toward foodborne diseases. 2TiC-Maraging stainless steel composite:microstructure, mechanical and wear properties显示文摘Particulate TiC reinforced 17-4PH and 465 maraging stainless steel matrix composites were processed by con- ventional powder metallurgy (P/M). TiC-maraging stainless steel composites with theoretical density >97% were produced using conventional P/M. The microstructure, and mechanical and wear properties of the composites were evaluated. The microstructure of the composites consisted of (core-rim structure) spherical and semi-spherical TiC particles depending on the wettability of the matrix with TiC particles. In TiC-maraging stainless steel composites, 465 stainless steel binder phase showed good wettability with TiC particles. Some microcracks appeared in the composites, indicating the presence of ten- sile stresses in the composites produced during sintering. The typical properties, hardness, and bend strength were reported for the composites. After heat treatment and aging, an increase in hardness was observed. The increase in hardness was at- tributed to the aging reaction in maraging stainless steel. 3Effects of Sialic Acid from Edible Bird Nest on Cell Viability Associated with Brain Cognitive Performance in Mice显示文摘Background:Edible bird nest(EBN)is a natural food product rich in glycoprotein such as sialic acid,which has been reported to improve brain functions.The EBN is widely consumed due to its higher nutritional contents and antioxidant status;however,an interaction of EBN on brain cell metabolic activity and viability are still unclear.Objective:The objectives of this study were to identify the effect of sialic acid from EBN on the cell viability and to determine the appropriate concentration of sialic acid on cognitive performance in mice.Materials and Methods:The viability of pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma cell lines were tested using the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.For in vivo study,7-week-old female BALB/c mice were randomly assigned into four treatment groups and were treated with sialic acid for 21 days.At day 22,all mice were tested on cognitive performance by Y-maze test.Results:Treatment concentration of sialic acid extract and sialic acid standard at 60μg/mL(0.6 ppm)increased cell viability and showed no cytotoxicity effects in pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma cell lines.In addition,an administration of higher dose of sialic acid at 0.6 ppm in animals improved Y-maze test performance,which they showed significantly higher number of entries and time spent in the novel arm.Conclusion:Thus,the current study shows that the sialic acid extract at 0.6 ppm improved brain cognitive performance in mice associated with an increased viability of pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma cell lines.Siti Khadijah Abdul Khalid Aswir Abd Rashed Saleha Abdul Aziz Hafandi Ahmad 2019World Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2019,5,4:3

18Genetic population structure of red snapper(Lutjanus malabaricus)and orange-spotted grouper(Epinephelus coiodes)in Brunei and Sabah显示文摘The genetic population structure of red snapper Lutjanus malabaricus and orange-spotted grouper Epinepheluscoiodes in Brunei and Sabah was investigated using allozyme electrophoresis. Samples were collected from threesites in Brunei for E. coiodes and from three sites in Brunei and Sabah for L. malabaricus. A total of 22 loci and 16loci were scored, respectively. The index of fixation (FST) for the E. coiodes population was 0.176 but, in general, itlacked within-population structuring. The FST was particularly high between Brunei Bay/Jerudong and Brunei Bay/Kuala Belait, suggesting genetic subdivision on a small spatial scale. Isolation of Brunei Bay from the South ChinaSea may constrain the movement of adult fishes and larval dispersal, thereby reducing homogeneity amongsubpopulations. All variable loci for E. coiodes were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium except for MDH* and GTDHP*(P < 0.01), in which two subpopulations showed an excess of heterozygotes (P < 0.01). The study on the L.malabaricus population showed a heterozygote deficit of approximately 60% in variable loci (FIS, genetic variationwithin population = 0.45;P < 0.05);however, the mean observed heterozygosity for the population far exceeded L.malabaricus populations in Australia and Indonesia. A FST value of 0.076 revealed moderate genetic differentiationamong subpopulations of L. malabaricus. The genotypes were likely to be drawn from the same distribution inJerudong and Kuala Belait.
