| 1 | Single capillary oximetry and tissue ultrastructural sensing by dual-band dual-scan inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography显示文摘Measuring capillary oxygenation and the surrounding ultrastructure can allow one to monitor a microvascular niche and better understand crucial biological mechanisms.However,capillary oximetry and pericapillary ultrastructure are challenging to measure in vivo.Here we demonstrate a novel optical imaging system,dual-band dual-scan inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography(D2-ISOCT),that,for the first time,can simultaneously obtain the following metrics in vivo using endogenous contrast:(1)capillary-level oxygen saturation and arteriolar-level blood flow rates,oxygen delivery rates,and oxygen metabolic rates;(2)spatial characteristics of tissue structures at length scales down to 30 nm;and(3)morphological images up to 2mm in depth.To illustrate the capabilities of D2-ISOCT,we monitored alterations to capillaries and the surrounding pericapillary tissue(tissue between the capillaries)in the healing response of a mouse ear wound model.The obtained microvascular and ultrastructural metrics corroborated well with each other,showing the promise of D2-ISOCT for becoming a powerful new non-invasive imaging tool. | Rongrong Liu James A.Winkelmann Graham Spicer Yunxiao Zhu Aya Eid Guillermo A.Ameer Vadim Backman Ji Yi | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018，7，1： | 4 |
| 2 | Magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal marrow:Basic understanding of the normal marrow pattern and its variant显示文摘For now, magnetic resonance(MR) is the best noninvasive imaging modality to evaluate vertebral bone marrow thanks to its inherent soft-tissue contrast andnon-ionizing nature. A daily challenging scenario for every radiologist interpreting MR of the vertebral column is discerning the diseased from normal marrow. This requires the radiologist to be acquainted with the used MR techniques to judge the spinal marrow as well as its normal MR variants. Conventional sequences used basically to image marrow include T1 W, fat-suppressed T2 W and short tau inversion recovery(STIR) imaging provides gross morphological data. Interestingly, using non-routine MR sequences; such as opposed phase, diffusion weighted, MR spectroscopy and contrastedenhanced imaging; may elucidate the nature of bone marrow heterogeneities; by inferring cellular and chemical composition; and adding new functional prospects. Recalling the normal composition of bone marrow elements and the physiologic processes of spinal marrow conversion and reconversion eases basic understanding of spinal marrow imaging. Additionally, orientation with some common variants seen during spinal marrow MR imaging as hemangiomas and bone islands is a must. | 3 | Post-cholecystectomy symptoms were caused by persistence of a functional gastrointestinal disorder显示文摘AIM:To classify gallstone disease as a basis for assessment of post-cholecystectomy symptoms.METHODS:One hundred and fifty three patients with a clinical and ultrasonographic diagnosis of gallstones filled out a structured questionnaire on abdominal pain symptoms and functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) before and at six months after cholecystectomy.Symptom frequency groups (SFG) were categorized according to frequency of pain attacks.According to certain pain characteristics in gallstone patients,a gallstone symptom score was accorded on a scale from one to ten.A visual analogue scale was used to quantify pain.Operative specimens were examined for size and magnitude of stone contents as well as presence of bacteria.Follow-up took place after six months with either a consultation or via a mailed questionnaire.Results were compared with those obtained pre-operatively to describe and analyze symptomatic outcome.RESULTS:SFG groups were categorized as severe (24.2%),moderate (38.6%) and mild (22.2%) attack frequency,and a chronic pain condition (15%).Pain was cured or improved in about 90% of patients and two-thirds of patients obtained complete symptom relief.Patients with the most frequent pain episodes were less likely to obtain symptom relief.FGID was present in 88% of patients pre-operatively and in 57% postoperatively (P=0.244).Those that became asymptomatic or improved with regard to pain also had most relief from FGID (P=0.001).No pre-operative FGID meant almost complete cure.CONCLUSION:Only one third of patients with FGID experienced postoperative relief,indicating that FGID was a dominant cause of post-cholecystectomy symptoms. | Malte Schmidt Karl Sφndenaa John A Dumot Steven Rosenblatt Trygve Hausken Maria Ramnefjell Gro Njφlstad Geir Egil Eide | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012，18，12： | 4 |
| 4 | Ethanol-induced hepatic autophagy: Friend or foe?显示文摘Excessive alcohol intake may induce hepatic apoptosis, steatosis, fibrosis, cirrhosis and even cancer. Ethanolinduced activation of general or selective autophagy as mitophagy or lipophagy in hepatocytes is generally considered a prosurvival mechanism. On the other side of the coin, upregulation of autophagy in nonhepatocytes as stellate cells may stimulate fibrogenesis and subsequently induce detrimental effects on the liver. The autophagic response of other non-hepatocytes as macrophages and endothelial cells is unknown yet and needs to be investigated as these cells play important roles in ethanol-induced hepatic steatosis and damage. | 5 | Isolation and characterization of marine-derived actinomycetes with cytotoxic activity from the Red Sea coast显示文摘Objective: To isolate and evaluate the cytotoxic activity of different actinomycetes species isolated from the Red Sea coast in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.Methods: Forty actinomycetes strains were isolated from different sediments and seawater samples collected from the Red Sea coast in Egypt. Actinomycetes were recognized by morphological and microscopic examinations. Cell viability and cytotoxicity induced by the crude extracts on breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 were assessed using methylene blue assay. The strains with promising cytotoxic activity were identified by sequencing and amplifying the 16 S r RNA genes. The antibacterial activities of the crude extracts were performed using Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method.Results: The results indicated that five ethyl acetate extracts exhibited cytotoxicity towards breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231. The highest cytotoxic activity was found for the ethyl acetate extracts of EGY2 and EGY39. The isolate EGY3 was identified as a new Streptomyces species, while the actinomycete EGY22 was found to be a member of the genus Nocardiopsis sp. The crude extract of the isolate EGY8 showed slightly high antimicrobial activity against different test microorganisms.Conclusions: The results of the present study reveal that marine sediments of the Red Sea are a potent source of novel species of actinomycetes. | 11 | Influence of chemical reaction on heat and mass transfer of non-Newtonian fluid with yield stress by free convection from vertical surface in porous medium considering Soret effect显示文摘The effect of chemical reaction on free convection heat and mass transfer for a non-Newtonian power law fluid over a vertical flat plate embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium has been studied in the presence of the yield stress and the Soret effect. The governing boundary layer equations and boundary conditions are cast into a dimensionless form by similarity transformations, and the resulting system of equations is solved by a finite difference method. The results are presented and discussed for concentration profiles, as well as the Nusselt number and the Sherwood number for various values of the parameters, which govern the problem. The results obtained show that the flow field is influenced appreciably by the presence of the chemical reaction parameter γ, the order of the chemical reaction parameter m, the Soret number S r , the buoyancy ratio N, the Lewis number Le, and the dimensionless rheological parameter Ω. | F. | 14 | Epidemiology of isolated hand injuries in the United Arab Emirates显示文摘AIM To provide suggestions for hand injury prevention by study the demography and risk factors of casualties suffering from isolated hand injuries.METHODS All trauma patients with isolated hand injuries who were admitted to Al Ain Hospital for more than 24 h during a period of 3 years were studied. Patient demographics,location, mechanism/time of injury, and length of hospital stay were all analyzed.RESULTS Two hundred and ten patients were studied. Their mean age was 29.7 years. Males constituted 92%. Sixty-five point one percent of all cases were from the Indian subcontinent. The workplace was the most common location of injury(67.1%), followed by the home(17.1%)and road(6.2%). Machinery caused 36.2% of all injuries,followed by heavy object(20.5%) and fall(11%). Cases injured at home were young(P < 0.0001) with an associated higher incidence of females(P < 0.0001).CONCLUSION Male workers in Al Ain city are at greater risk of sustaining hand injuries, predominantly from machinery.
