1Vitamin D and autoimmune thyroid diseases显示文摘The role of vitamin D as an immune modulator has been emphasized in recent years,and low levels of the hormone were observed in several autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus.Vitamin D mediates its effect though binding to vitamin D receptor(VDR),and activation of VDR-responsive genes.While VDR gene polymorphism was found to associate with autoimmune thyroid diseases(AITDs),few studies examined levels of vitamin D in these patients and those that did yielded conflicting results.We therefore undertook to evaluate the levels of vitamin D in patients with AITDs compared to patients with non-AITDs and healthy controls.Serum vitamin D(25-OH)levels were measured in 50 patients with AITDs,42 patients with non-AITDs and 98 healthy subjects,utilizing the LIAISON chemiluminescence immunoassay(DiaSorin,Saluggia,Italy).VitaminD deficiency was designated at levels lower than 10 ng/ml.Antithyroid antibodies,thyroid functions and demographic parameters were evaluated in all patients.The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in patients with AITDs compared with healthy individuals(72% versus 30.6%;P<0.001),as well as in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis compared to patients with non-AITDs(79% versus 52%;P<0.05).Vitamin D deficiency also correlated to the presence of antithyroid antibodies(P=0.01)and abnormal thyroid function tests(P=0.059).Significantly low levels of vitamin D were documented in patients with AITDs that were related to the presence of anti thyroid antibodies and abnormal thyroid function tests,suggesting the involvement of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of AITDs and the advisability of supplementation.Shaye Kivity Nancy Agmon-Levin Michael Zisappl Yinon Shapira Endre V Nagy Katalin Danko Zoltan Szekanecz Pnina Langevitz Yehuda Shoenfeld 2011Cellular & Molecular Immunology2011,8,3:47

4Probiotic metabolites from Bacillus coagulans GanedenBC30^(TM) support maturation of antigen-presenting cells in vitro显示文摘AIM:To study the effects of probiotic metabolites on maturation stage of antigen-presenting immune cells.METHODS:Ganeden Bacillus coagulans 30(GBC30) bacterial cultures in log phase were used to isolate the secreted metabolite(MET) fraction.A second fraction was made to generate a crude cell-wall-enriched fraction,by centrifugation and lysis,followed by washing.A preparation of MET was subjected to size exclusion centrifugation,generating three fractions:< 3 kDa,3-30 kDa,and 30-200 kDa and activities were tested in comparison to crude MET and cell wall in primary cultures of human peripheral blood mononuclear cell(PBMC) as a source of antigen-presenting mononuclear phagocytes.The maturation status of mononuclear phagocytes was evaluated by staining with monoclonal antibodies towards CD14,CD16,CD80 and CD86 and analyzed by flow cytometry.RESULTS:Treatment of PBMC with MET supported maturation of mononuclear phagocytes toward both macrophage and dendritic cell phenotypes.The biological activity unique to the metabolites included a reduction of CD14+ CD16+ pro-inflammatory cells,and this property was associated with the high molecular weight metabolite fraction.Changes were also seen for the dendritic cell maturation markers CD80 and CD86.On CD14dim cells,an increase in both CD80 and CD86 expression was seen,in contrast to a selective increase in CD86 expression on CD14bright cells.The co-expression of CD80 and CD86 indicates effective antigen presentation to T cells and support of T helper cell differentiation.The selective expression of CD86 in the absence of CD80 points to a role in generating T regulatory cells.CONCLUSION:The data show that a primary mechanism of action of GBC30 metabolites involves support of more mature phenotypes of antigen-presenting cells,important for immunological decision-making.Kathleen F Benson Kimberlee A Redman Steve G Carter David Keller Sean Farmer John R Endres Gitte S Jensen 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,16:8
5Pulmonary embolization as primary manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma with intracardiac penetration: A case report显示文摘Intracardiac manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a rare condition and an uncommon finding even at autopsy. Pulmonary tumor embolism as a presenting feature of HCC has been published only twice previously.In our case report, a 63-year-old man presented with high fever and six episodes of recurrent pneumonias during the last half year. Echocardiography was performed, a solid mass was found in the right atrium. Transesophageal echocardiography proved a tumor mass in the inferior vena cava (ⅣC) extending into the right atrium, abdominal ultrasound revealed tumor mass in the ⅣC and a solid tumor in the liver. Combined liver and heart surgery was attempted in order to remove the tumor mass from both the liver and the right atrium. Acute cor pulmonale occurred during tumor removal from the right atrium and the patient expired. In addition to local factors the possibility of embolization should arise in the background of recurrent pneumonia. Occult carcinoma must be included in possible causes of recurrent pulmonary embolism. Searching for primary malignancy should include HCC as frequent cause of hypercoagulability. 6Challenges facing early detection of acute kidney injury in the critically ill显示文摘Recent advances in the detection of acute kidney injury(AKI) afford the possibility of early intervention. Proteomics and genomics have identified many markers of tubular cell injury, some of which are manifest in the urine. One trial has used novel injury biomarkers to recruit patients to an intervention prior to an elevation in plasma creatinine. This trial and other recent studies have shown that the use of biomarkers of injury will depend on the time the patient presents following insult to the kidney, the likely cause of that insult, and the pre-injury renal function of that patient. The definition of AKI is likely to change in the near future to include a measure of injury. 7Electrodeposition of Al from a 1-butylpyrrolidine-AlCl_3 ionic liquid显示文摘The addition of 1-butylpyrrolidine to AlCl_3 results in the formation of an electrolyte that is suited to Al deposition.The feasibility of electrodepositing Al from the synthesized electrolyte was investigated.Several compositions of AlCl_3 and 1-butylpyrrolidine were prepared for this purpose.These mixtures show a different phase behavior at various compositions of AlCl_3 and 1-butylpyrrolidine.IR,Raman and NMR spectroscopy were employed to characterize the synthesized liquids.Among the prepared compositions,1:1.2 mol ratio of 1-butylpyrrolidine:AlCl_3 and the upper phase of 1:1.3 mol ratio of 1-butylpyrrolidine:AlCl_3 were found to be suitable for Al electrodeposition at room temperature(RT).Uniform and thick( mm thick) layers of Al were obtained on copper at RT.Al deposition occured from the cationic species of AlCl_3 xLty(where x r 2,y ? 1–2,and L ? 1-butylpyrrolidine) in this electrolyte.This behavior is contrary to the well investigated classic AlCl_3 based ionic liquids,where the deposition of Al occurs mainly from anionic Al2 Cl 7ions.Giridhar Pulletikurthi Bjorn Bodecker Andriy Borodin Bernd Weidenfeller Frank Endres 2015Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2015,25,6:4

9Evolutionary history and phylogeography of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Europe based on molecular markers显示文摘In this review we summarized recent historical records and molecular studies on evolutionary history and phylogeography of Scots pine with focus on the European highly fragmented distribution area of the species. Fossilized pollen, plant micro-and macrofossil records provided evidences on the large-scale species' range shifts and demographic changes during the Quaternary. Populations of Scots pine were documented both in the glacial(incl.full glaciation) and interglacial periods. Recolonization of Europe after the glaciation originated from the(Sub)Mediterranean areas like the Balkan Peninsula but also from around the Eastern Alps and the surroundings of the Danube plain. Fennoscandia and northern European Baltic regions were most probably colonized from two main directions, from Western Europe and from the Russian Plain. Modern history of Scots pine was hardly affected by anthropogenic activities that started to strengthen in the Bronze and Iron Age. Along with the fossil records,molecular genetic tools were used to infer the origin and putative history including migration, differentiation and demography of the species. In this paper we compiled the major publications(30) of molecular genetic studies of the past 20 years derived from distinctly inherited organelle genomes(mitochondrial, chloroplast, nuclear) revealed by different marker systems(mt DNA-cox1,-nad1,-nad3,-nad7, ISSR, cp SSR, n SSR, B-SAP, SNP). It is important to consider that different phylogeographic patterns can be drawn by the analysis of different DNA marker types.Accordingly the use of more than one marker simultaneously outlines the most sophisticated phylogeographical pattern on the genetic lineages and can reveal high differentiation of the European distribution. Combined marker systems and markers derived from coding sequences have also been used to detect species' phylogeographic patterns,but these were rarely applied to Scots pine. 18Highlights of the 2nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases: tribbles tremble in therapeutics for immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer显示文摘The Tribbles(TRIB) family of pseudokinase proteins has been shown to play key roles in cell cycle, metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory disease, and cancer development. A better understanding of the mechanisms of TRIB pseudokinases could provide new insights for disease development and help promote TRIB proteins as novel therapeutic targets for drug discovery. At the 2 nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases held on May 7–9, 2018 in Beijing, China, a group of leading Tribbles scientists reported their findings and ongoing studies about the effects of the different TRIB proteins in the areas of immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer. Here, we summarize important and insightful overviews from 4 keynote lectures, 13 plenary lectures and 8 short talks that took place during this meeting.
