1The Sandfish's Skin:Morphology,Chemistry and Reconstruction显示文摘The sandfish is a lizard having the remarkable ability to move in desert sand in a swimming-like fashion. The most out-standing adaptations to this mode of life are the low friction behaviour and the extensive abrasion resistance of the sandfish skin against sand, outperforming even steel. We investigated the topography, the composition and the mechanical properties of sandfish scales. These consist of glycosylated keratins with high amount of sulphur but no hard inorganic material, such as silicates or lime. Remarkably, atomic force microscopy shows an almost complete absence of attractive forces between the scale surface and a silicon tip, suggesting that this is responsible for the unusual tribological properties. The unusual glycosylation of the keratins was found to be absolutely necessary for the described phenomenon. The scales were dissolved and reconstituted on a polymer surface resulting in properties similar to the original scale. 9Confocal endomicroscopy and cyst fluid molecular analysis: Comprehensive evaluation of pancreatic cysts显示文摘Increases in the quality as well as utilization of cross-sectional imaging have led to rising diagnoses of pancreatic cystic lesions(PCL). Accurate presurgical diagnosis enables appropriate triage of PCLs. Unfortunately, current diagnostic approaches have suboptimal accuracy and may lead to unnecessary surgical resections or missed diagnoses of advanced neoplasia. Additionally, early detection represents an opportunity for intervention to prevent the progression to pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Our aim for this review is to systematically review the current literature on confocal endomicroscopy and molecular biomarkers in the evaluation of PCLs. Confocal laser endomicroscopy is a novel technology that allows for real-time in vivo microscopic imaging with multiple clinical trials identifying characteristic endomicroscopy findings of various pancreatic cystic lesions. DNA-based molecular markers have also emerged as another diagnostic modality as the pattern of genetic alternations present in cyst fluid can provide both diagnostic and prognostic data. 16Anaerobic co-digestion of rice straw and digested swine manure with different total solid concentration for methane production显示文摘This study aimed to investigate potential methane production through anaerobic co-digestion of rice straw and digested swine manure with different total solids.The research was carried out in bench scale with utilizing batch system.To evaluate the stability of anaerobic co-digestion process,the experiment was run in triplicate.The anaerobic co-digestion process was operated in 500 mL batch digesters under constant agitation speed and temperature.The agitation speed was maintained at 270 r/min.Temperature of the batch system was set and maintained at 35℃.Digested swine manure utilized in this experiment was obtained from semi-continuous digesters run at steady state condition,with 25 days of hydraulic retention time under mesophilic condition.Rice straw(RS)generated the highest methane production at 3% total solids(TS)which was around(1814±47.43)mL,where in this concentration,it had C:N ratio at 10.6:1.Rice straw obtained the highest methane yield at 3% TS,which was around(141.4±3.70)mL CH_(4)/g volatile solids(VS)added.Rice straw also had the highest chemical oxygen demand(COD)removal and VS reduction at 3% TS which were around(52.97%±1.46%)and(61.81%±1.04%),respectively.Darwin Jay J.Cheng Zhimin Liu Jorge Gontupil O-Seob Kwon 2014International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2014,7,6:2
17Mass Spectrometry-based Quantitative Proteomic Profiling of Human Pancreatic and Hepatic Stellate Cell Lines显示文摘The functions of the liver and the pancreas differ; however, chronic inflammation in both organs is associated with fibrosis. Evidence suggests that fibrosis in both organs is partially regulated by organ-specific stellate cells. We explore the proteome of human hepatic stellate cells (hHSC) and human pancreatic stellate cells (hPaSC) using mass spectrometry (MS)-based quantitative proteomics to investigate pathophysiologic mechanisms. Proteins were isolated from whole cell lysates of immortalized hHSC and hPaSC. These proteins were tryptically digested, labeled with tandem mass tags (TMT), fractionated by OFFGEL, and subjected to MS. Proteins significantly different in abundance (P < 0.05) were classified via gene ontology (GO) analysis. We identified 1223 proteins and among them, 1222 proteins were quantifiable. Statistical analysis determined that 177 proteins were of higher abundance in hHSC, while 157 were of higher abundance in hPaSC. GO classification revealed that proteins of relatively higher abundance in hHSC were associated with protein production, while those of relatively higher abundance in hPaSC were involved in cell structure.
