| 1 | Baseline effects of lysophosphatidylcholine and nerve growth factor in a rat model of sciatic nerve regeneration after crush injury显示文摘Schwann cells play a major role in helping heal injured nerves. They help clear debris, produce neurotrophins, upregulate neurotrophin receptors, and form bands of Büngner to guide the healing nerve. But nerves do not always produce enough neurotrophins and neurotrophin receptors to repair themselves. Nerve growth factor(NGF) is an important neurotrophin for promoting nerve healing and lysophosphatidylcholine(LPC) has been shown to stimulate NGF receptors(NGFR). This study tested the administration of a single intraneural injection of LPC(1 mg/mL for single LPC injection and 10 mg/mL for multiple LPC injections) at day 0 and one(day 7), two(days 5 and 7), or three(days 5, 7, and 9) injections of NGF(160 ng/mL for single injections and 80 ng/mL for multiple injections) to determine baseline effects on crush ed sciatic nerves in rats. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, crush, crush-NGF, and crush-LPC-NGF. The healing of the nerves was measured weekly by monitoring gait; electrophysiological parameters: compound muscle action potential(CMAP) amplitudes; and morphological parameters: total fascicle areas, myelinated fiber counts, fiber densities, fiber packing, and mean g-ratio values at weeks 3 and 6. The crush, crush-NGF, and crush-LPC-NGF groups statistically differed from the control group for all six weeks for the electrophysiological parameters but only differed from the control group at week 3 for the morphological parameters. The crush, crush-NGF, and crush-LPC-NGF groups did not differ from each other over the course of the study. Single injections of LPC and NGF one week apart or multiple treatments of NGF at 5, 7 and 9 days post-injury did not alter the healing rate of the sciatic nerves during weeks 1-6 of the study. | 11 | Radiological determination of the cranial index of present-day Ghanaians显示文摘The cranial index(CI)of Ghanaians is currently unknown.The aim of this study was to measure the CI in a population of Ghanaians in order to classify them against pre-determined CI categories.A systematic random sampling method was used to select 300 normal computed tomography(CT)head scans of adult Ghanaians from the largest hospital in Ghana.All patients were deemed to have a normal cranial image configuration based on the radiological report.The biparietal diameter(BPD,width)and the occipitofrontal diameter(OFD,length)were measured on transaxial CT images using a workstation with a calibrated measurement calliper tool.The CI ratio was calculated as the BPD multiplied by 100 and divided by the OFD.Mean,standard deviation(SD)and range were calculated for BPD,OFD and CI.Differences in measurements between demographic groups were compared using an unpaired t-test,with testαset at 0.05.Of the population of Ghanaians included in this study,165(55%)were male and 135(45%)were female.The mean CI was 77.3±3.6 in males and 79.0±3.3 in females,placing both genders in the mesocephalic category.However,the difference between males and females was found to be statistically significant(P=0.02).The study indicated that most Ghanaian adults belong to the mesocephalic category of CI.Females also had a higher CI,which could be used to differentiate gender groups.This information can be useful for forensic medicine,plastic surgeries for clinical and research purpose. | Benard Ohene Botwe Jeffrey Nana Afari Boadu Kofi Adesi Kyei John D.Thompson | 2022 | Forensic Sciences Research2022,7,2: | 0 |
| 12 | Variation of a floral polymorphism at different spatial scales in the Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus assoanus显示文摘Aims Habitat fragmentation impacts the spatial extent and isolation of local populations and communities.Although the biological consequences of these impacts have been well studied at the site level,effects directly related to changes in the spatial configuration of populations in the landscape remain less clear.The objective of this study is to examine how changes in the spatial-scale configuration of populations are associated with variability in morph rations in the floral polymorphic Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus assoanus.Methods We performed a nested analysis of morph ratio variation at three spatial scales:a 50×50 km regional scale in SE France,in fourteen 1×1 km landscapes located in the same region,and within 12 spatially extensive population patches.We also quantified variation in the behaviour of pollinators in population patches of contrasting spatial configuration.Important FindingsAt a regional scale,morph ratios show a geographic pattern of increasing isoplethy(1:1 morph ratio)away from centres of human population development and in upland pastures.At the landscape scale,isoplethy of local population patches is more correlated with decreased isolation among patches than with patch size.Finally,within local isoplethic populations,small patches can show significantly biased morph ratios.In small isolated patches,pollinators perform shorter flight distances among consecutive flower visits than in spatially extensive patches.This study of variation in a genetic polymorphism at multiple spatial scales provides new insights into the scale-dependent effects of habitat fragmentation and the potential occurrence of metapopulation dynamics in natural plant populations. | Regina Berjano Perrine Gauthier Chiara Parisi Valentine Vaudey Virginie Pons Alain Renaux David Doblas John D.Thompson | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,3: | 0 |
| 13 | Changing assembly processes during a primary succession of plant communities on Mediterranean roadcuts显示文摘Aims Studying plant ecological succession provides insights into the spatiotemporal processes underlying community assembly and is of primary importance for restoration ecology.We investigate here colonization events and local community assembly over an original primary succession occurring on roadcuts after roadwork.For this,we addressed both the changes in species presence–absence(incidence data)to highlight pre-establishment filters and in species relative abundances to further assess the influence of local biotic processes.Methods We studied 43 limestone roadcuts in Mediterranean France,covering five age classes up to an age of 80 years,along with 13 natural cliffs as a reference,and we counted 14322 plant individuals on these sites.We applied a constrained nonsymmetric correspondence analysis of both the incidence(presence–absence)and abundance data to assess the variation of these data along the chronosequence.Important Findings Along the first 30 years,the initially abundant short-lived species declined both in terms of incidence and abundance and were replaced by longer lived herbaceous and woody species.This first phase was characterized by species that are widespread in the surrounding scrublands and was comparable to an early secondary succession there.After 30 years,there were continuing changes in incidence data with age,but no more significant change in species’abundances.This second phase was marked by the late colonization of specialists that did not become dominant.Although colonization and establishment limitation was thereby apparent for specialist species,a slow convergence of community composition toward the situation of natural cliffs could be detected in the older stages of the chronosequence.These findings convey insights into the natural dynamics of man-made outcrop plant communities and may be useful for the ecological management and restoration of such contexts.It also illustrates the interest of comparing incidence and abundance data to investigate the relative influence of ecological determinants on the assembly of plant communities. | Valerie Raevel Francxois Munoz Virginie Pons Alain Renaux Arnaud Martin John D.Thompson | 2013 | Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,1: | 0 |
