12Burden and factors associated with schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections among school-age children in Huambo,Uige and Zaire provinces,Angola显示文摘Background:Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths(STHs)contribute high disease burdens amongst the neglected tropical diseases(NTDs)and are public health problems in Angola.This study reports the prevalence,intensity and risk factors for schistosomiasis and STH infection in Huambo,Uige and Zaire provinces,Angola,to inform a school-based preventive chemotherapy program.Methods:A two-stage cluster design was used to select schools and schoolchildren to participate in parasitological and water,sanitation and hygiene(WASH)surveys across Huambo,Uige,and Zaire provinces.Point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen and urinalysis rapid diagnostic tests(RDTs)were used to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni and S.haematobium,respectively.Kato-Katz was used to identify and quantify STH species and quantify and compare with RDTs for S.mansoni.Urine filtration was used to quantify and compare with RDTs for S.haematobium.Descriptive statistics were used for prevalence and infection intensity of schistosomiasis and STH infection.Performance of RDTs was assessed through specificity and Cohen’s Kappa agreement with microscopy.A multivariate regression analysis was used to determine demographic and WASH factors associated with schistosomiasis and STH infection.Results:A total 575 schools and 17,093 schoolchildren participated in the schistosomiasis survey,of which 121 schools and 3649 schoolchildren participated in the STH survey.Overall prevalence of S.mansoni was 21.2%(municipality range 0.9–74.8%)and S.haematobium 13.6%(range 0–31.2%),with an overall prevalence of schistosomiasis of 31.4%(range 5.9–77.3%).Overall prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides was 25.1%(range 0–89.7%),hookworm 5.2%(range 0–42.6%),and Trichuris trichiura 3.6%(range 0–24.2%),with an overall prevalence of STH infection of 29.5%(range 0.8–89.7%).Ecological zone and ethnicity were factors associated with schistosomiasis and STH infection,with older age and female sex additional risk factors for S.haematobium.Conclusions:Most municipalities met World Health Organization defined prevalence thresholds for a schistosomiasis preventive chemotherapy program.A STH preventive chemotherapy program is indicated for nearly all municipalities in Uige and select municipalities in Huambo and Zaire.The association between ecological zone and ethnicity with schistosomiasis and STH infection necessitates further evaluation of home and school environmental,sociodemographic and behavioural factors to inform targeted control strategies to complement preventive chemotherapy programs.Adam W.Bartlett Jose C.Sousa-Figueiredo Roelofje Cvan Goor Paul Monaghan Warren Lancaster Rukaaka Mugizi Elsa P.Mendes Susana Vaz Nery Sergio Lopes 2022Infectious Diseases of Poverty2022,11,3:0
13Feasibility of mapping and cannulation of the porcine epicardial lymphatic system for sampling and decompression in heart failure research显示文摘Background and Aim:The cardiac lymphatic system drains excess fluid from the cardiac interstitium.Any impairment or dysfunction of the lymph structures can result in the accumulation of interstitial fluid,and may lead to edema and eventually cardiac dysfunction.Lymph originates directly from the interstitium and carries real-time information about the metabolic state of cells in specific regions of the heart.The detailed anatomy of the epicardial lymphatic system in individuals is broadly unknown.Generally,the epicardial lymphatic system is not taken into consideration during heart surgery.This study investigates the feasibility of detailed mapping and cannulation of the porcine epicardial lymphatic system for use in preservation of explanted hearts and heart failure studies in pigs and humans.Methods:The anatomy of the epicardial lymphatic systems of forty pig hearts was studied and documented.Using a 27 G needle,India ink was introduced directly into the epicardial lymphatic vessels in order to visualise them.Based on the anatomical findings thus obtained,two cannulation regions for the left and right principal trunks were identified.These regions were cannulated with a 26 G intravenous Venflon cannula-over-needle,and a Galeo Hydro Guide F014 wire was used to verify that the lumen was patent.Results:The main epicardial lymphatic collectors were found to follow the main coronary arteries.Most of the lymph vessels drained into the left ventricular trunk,which evacuates fluid from the left heart and also partially from the right heart.The right trunk was often found to drain into the left trunk anterior basally.Right heart drainage was highly variable compared to the left.In addition,the overall cannulation success rate of the selected cannulation sites was only 57%.Conslusions:Mapping of the porcine epicardial lymphatic anatomy is feasible.The right ventricular drainage system had a higher degree of variability than the left,and the right cardiac lymph system was found to be partially cleared through the left lymphatic trunk.To improve cannulation success rate,we proposed two sites for cannulation based on these findings and the use of Venflon cannulas(26 G)for cannulation and lymph collection.This method might be helpful for future studies that focus on biochemical sample analysis and decompression.Relevance for patients:Real-time biochemical assessment and decompression of lymph may contribute to the understanding of heart failure and eventually result in preventive measures.First its relevance should be established by additional research in both arrested and working porcine hearts.Imaging and mapping of the epicardial lymphatics may enable sampling and drainage and contribute to the prevention or treatment of heart failure.We envision that this approach may be considered in patients with a high risk of postoperative left and right heart failure during open-heart surgery.Benjamin Kappler Dara RPabittel Sjoerd van Tuijl Marco Stijnen Bas AJMde Mol Allard Cvan der Wal 2018Journal of Clinical & Translational Research2018,4,2:0
14Weda,a new genus with two new species of Euphorbiaceae-Crotonoideae from Halmahera(North Maluku,Indonesia)and phylogenetic relationships of the Australasian tribe Ricinocarpeae显示文摘During the environmental impact study for a proposed nickel mine near Weda Bay on Halmahera in North Moluccas(Maluku Utara Province),Indonesia,two unknown Euphorbiaceae were discovered.Morphological comparisons and molecular phylogenetic analyses using four markers(plastid trnL-F and rbcL,and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer and external transcribed spacer)indicated that they should be recognized as constituting a new,distinct genus of two species,which are described and illustrated here as Weda fragarioides and Weda lutea.The new taxa are members of the Australasian tribe Ricinocarpeae in subfamily Crotonoideae,and they are most closely related to Alphandia.In contrast with the otherwise mostly sclerophyllous Ricinocarpeae,Weda possesses stellate to dendritic hairs,large,long-petiolate,glandular leaves,and inflorescences with a pair of large,leafy,subopposite bracts.The two narrowly distributed species are distinguished from each other by vegetative and floral features,molecular data,and elevational preferences.Leaf elemental analysis of Weda indicated manganese,but not nickel,accumulation.Newly resolved generic relationships and potential morphological synapomorphies within Crotonoideae are discussed,and the circumscription of Ricinocarpeae is expanded from 7 to 11 genera.Peter Cvan Welzen Susana Arias Guerrero Deby Arifiani Tjut J.F.Bangun Roderick W.Bouman Marcel C.M.Eurlings Iska Gushilman Peter B.Phillipson Iris Tabak Esmee Winkel Kenneth J.Wurdack 2021Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,5:0
