| 7 | Ethanolic extract of Abrus precatorius leaves protected against mercury chloride-induced hepatocellular damage and cerebral Na+/K+-ATPase dysfunction in wistar rats显示文摘Plants are sources of medicinal compounds, and they play a crucial role in human health maintenance.Abrus precatorius is one of the important medicinal plants that have been alleged for their medicinal properties. This research unraveled the pharmacological effect of ethanolic extract of Abrus precatorius on lipid peroxidation, liver parameters, and Na^(+)/K^(+)-ATPase activity in HgCl_(2) treated wistar rats.Twenty-four(24)albino wistar rats weighing between 150-200 g were distributed into four groups of 6 animals each.Group A(control)received normal saline(0.9% NaCl),group B received 400 mg/kg of the extract only, group C received 4 mg/kg HgCl_(2) only, and group D received 400 mg/kg of extract+4 mg/kg of HgCl_(2).The treatment lasted for two weeks, and the animals were sacrificed on the 15th day.The blood, brains and livers were collected and used for assay of lipid peroxidation, liver function, and sodium pump activity. The results of liver function test revealed an elevated(P<0.05)level of serum aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, and total bilirubin in the group that received HgCl_(2) only(group C)when compared with the normal control(group A)that received normal saline only. However, the administration of extract in group D led to a marked(P<0.05)reduction in the activities of these enzymes and the level of total bilirubin when compared to the negative control(group C).On the contrary,HgCl_(2) caused a significant(P<0.05)reduction in serum total protein and albumin levels, but the extract reversed the effect of HgCl_(2) by elevating their concentrations.Nonetheless, the effect elicited by this extract is comparable to group A which received normal saline.Moreso, the result of lipid peroxidation revealed that HgCl_(2) treatment caused a marked(P<0.05)increase in the formation of lipid peroxidation adducts in both liver and brain homogenates in group C.On the contrary, administration of Abrus precatorius extract profoundly(P<0.05)inhibited HgCl_(2)-induced lipid peroxidation in group D.In addition,HgCl_(2) inhibited the activity of cerebral Na^(+)/K^(+)-ATPase,but the extract restored normalcy by increasing the activity of the enzyme in group D.Consequently, the results obtained justify the traditional use of Abrus precatorius and suggest that Abrus precatorius leaves may be used for management of liver diseases, oxidative stress-linked diseases and some neurodegenerative ailments. | Ebenezer Morayo Ale Steve Osagie Asuelimen Isaac John Umaru Bunmi Olaoluwa Olorundare Victoria Ifeoluwa Ayo Mgbede Joy Timothy Philip Shadrach | 2023 | Toxicology Advances2023,5,2: | 0 |
| 8 | Liming and Fertilizer Potentials of Some Underutilized Plant Materials in Southwestern Nigeria显示文摘Soil acidification and phosphorus deficiency are a major constraint to crop production in tropical soils.Use of conventional liming materials is associated with some limitations viz:inability to solely improve nitrogen and available phosphorus in soils, loss of soil organic carbon and soil aggregate stability.Liming and fertilizer potentials of leaves from three plant materials(Tithonia diversifolia(TL),Imperata cylindrica(SG)and Gliricidia sepium(GL))widely growing in Ogbomoso, southwest Nigeria, were tested under incubation condition. Each of the plant material was applied at the rate of 10 t·hm^(-2) with and without 50%concentration of NPK 15:15:15-urea mix in 500 g acidic soil.Sole lime applied at 1 t·hm^(-2),sole NPK 15:15:15 applied at 60 kg·hm^(-2) mixed with urea at 60 kg N·hm^(-2) and an unamended soil were compared in completely randomized design in three replicates. The treated soils were incubated for 12 weeks.Thereafter, maize seeds were raised in each pot for a period of 3 weeks.Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance.Regression analysis was used to predict contributions of increased soil p H in plant material treated soils to exchangeable Al,H,dry root weight of maize and available phosphorus. Results indicated that sole plant materials were the order SG>TL>GL significantly(p<0.05)reduced exchangeable acidity compared to unamended and sole NPK.Sole NPK had the highest exchangeable acidity(4.7 cmol·kg^(-1))compared to unamended soil(3.3 cmol·kg^(-1))and sole lime(2.7 cmol·kg^(-1)).Application of sole Tithonia diversifolia increased available phosphorus by 214%and 97%compared to unamended and sole NPK treated soils respectively.Sole plant materials increased maize root weight by 33%compared to sole NPK.Increasing soil p H at harvesting in plant material treated soils significantly reduced exchangeable H and A_1.Soil p H was responsible for up to 33%and 53%reductions in exchangeable Al and H,respectively. This culminated into up to 22%increases in dry root weight of maize seedling.Present results showed ability of the plant materials tested to ameliorate soil acidity and improved soil available phosphorus. The plant materials should be explored for using as green manure and composting feedstock. It will go a long way to reduce high dosage use of conventional liming and fertilizer materials on acidic nutrient degraded soils. | Oyeyiola Yetunde Bunmi Ewetola Esther Abosede Olatunji Olayinka Olakunle Ayanleke Abraham | 2017 | Journal of Northeast Agricultural University(English Edition)2017,24,3: | 0 |
| 9 | From talk to action:Developing a model to foster effective integration of traditional medicine into the Ghanaian healthcare system显示文摘This research assessed the experience of stakeholders and the efficacy of integrating traditional medicine into the Ghanaian health system using the Ashanti Region as the focal point.Elements of an integrative healthcare delivery model including philosophies/values,structure,process and outcome were used to conduct a quality assessment of the integrated health system in Ghana. Each element clearly showed that Ghana is currently not running a coordinated health practice model, thus making it a tolerant, rather than an inclusive, health system. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to discuss the development of a new and appropriately customised model that could enhance the practice of integrated healthcare in Ghana. The model we present has flexibility and far-reaching applicability in other African countries because such countries share similar socio-cultural and economic characteristics. As such, governments and health practitioners could adapt this model to improve the practice of integrated healthcare in their specific settings.Hospital administrators and health system researchers could also adapt the model to investigate or to monitor the progress and efficacy of integrated healthcare practices within their settings. This might help to understand the relationships between the integration of traditional medicine and health outcomes for a given population. | Irene G.Ampomah Bunmi S.Malau-Aduli Aduli E.O.Malau-Aduli Theophilus I.Emeto | 2023 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2023,21,5: | 0 |
| 10 | Teachers’Characteristics and Teaching Styles as Determinants of Students’Achievement in Senior Secondary Schools Civics and English Language in Osun State,Nigeria显示文摘The study examined the status of senior secondary schools’students’achievement in Civic Education and English Language in Osun State. It also investigated the Civic Education and English Language teachers’characteristics in the state and determined the teaching styles of Civic Education and English Language teachers in the study areas and finally assessed the influence of teachers’characteristics and teaching styles on students’achievement in secondary schools Civic Education and English Language. The study adopted Discriminant Analysis. The study sample consisted of 600 senior secondary school students,30 Civics teachers, and 30 English Language teachers that were selected using multi-stage sampling procedure.Four instruments were constructed and validated before use.Three research questions were asked and answered while one hypothesis was tested and verified. The results among others showed that more than 50%of the students that participated in the study had high status of achievement in Civic Education while more than 40%of English Language students that participated in the study had low status of achievement. The study also showed that teachers’characteristics pertinent to both Civic Education teachers and English Language teachers were, effective discipline skills(Civics,M=1.20,SD=0.407;English,M=1.40,SD=0.498)and good communication with parents(Civics,M=1.43,SD=0.504;English,M=1.40,SD=0.498).In addition, there was significant influence of teachers’characteristics and teaching styles on students’achievement in Civics and English Language in senior secondary schools(X^2(2)=16.37,p<0.05).The study concluded that teachers’characteristics and teaching styles are major determinants of students’achievement in Civic Education and English Language. | Babatunde Adeniyi Adeyemi Beatrice Bunmi Adeyemi Joshua Olayemi Salami | 2021 | Psychology Research2021,11,4: | 0 |
