2Potential impacts of Three Gorges Dam in China on the ecosystem of East China Sea显示文摘The Changjiang River in China was dammed in 2003. The possible changes in matters fluxes from the river downstream after the completion of Three Gorges Dam and their potential impacts on the ecosystem of the East China Sea are discussed.The estuarine and coastal waters in the East China Sea were heavily fertilized by the inflow of nutrient-rich freshwater from the Changjiang River,which has led to severe eutrophication and frequent harmful algal blooms,thus worsening the ecosystem health in this area. Analysis showed that the nutrient loadings are very likely to be reduced in the lower Changjiang River due to the construction of Three Gorges Dam. Especially for the total phosphorus,the discharges to the East China Sea will be reduced by one-third,which would relieve the severe eutrophication in this area. However,the expected decrease in the riverine silicate discharge would lead the ratio of silicon to nitrogen to be much less than 1 in the estuarine and coastal waters and thus may cause an elevation of flagellate growth. The changes in the annual water discharges and their seasonal distributions below the dam will be minor. Reduction of suspended particulate matter loading,due to the sedimentation behind the dam,will reduce the nutrient loadings of the particulate form especially for phosphorus,and decrease the turbidity of estuarine and coastal waters. 6Male horseshoe crabs Limulus polyphemus use multiple sensory cues to locate mates显示文摘The use of multisensory cues to locate mates can increase an organism's success by acting as a back-up plan whenone system fails, by providing additional information to the receiver, and by increasing their ability to detect mates using sensesthat have different ranges in a variable aquatic environment. In this contribution we review the sensory cues that male horseshoecrabs Limulus polyphemus are known to use when locating mates and then provide new data that shed light on this subject. Duringthe breeding season, females migrate into shore during high tides to spawn. Males attach to females as they approach thebeach or are attracted to pairs already spawning. Vision is well established as an important cue in attracting males. Althoughchemoreception is well known in other marine arthropods, and horseshoe crabs have the anatomy available, there are few studieson chemical cues in this species. Experiments are presented here that provide evidence for chemical cue use. 8Microstructural analysis of pineal volume using trueFISP imaging显示文摘AIM:To determine the spectrum of pineal microstructures (solid/cystic parts) in a large clinical population using a high-resolution 3D-T2-weighted sequence. METHODS:A total of 347 patients enrolled for cranial magnetic resonance imaging were randomly included in this study. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients. The exclusion criteria were artifacts or mass lesions prohibiting evaluation of the pineal gland in any of the sequences. True-FISP-3D-imaging (1.5-T, isotropic voxel 0.9 mm) was performed in 347 adults (55.4 ± 18.1 years). Pineal gland volume (PGV), cystic volume, and parenchyma volume (cysts exclud- ed) were measured manually. RESULTS:Overall, 40.3% of pineal glands were cystic. The median PGV was 54.6 mm 3 (78.33 ± 89.0 mm 3 ), the median cystic volume was 5.4 mm 3 (15.8 ± 37.2mm 3 ), and the median parenchyma volume was 53.6 mm 3 (71.9 ± 66.7 mm 3 ). In cystic glands, the standard deviation of the PGV was substantially higher than in solid glands (98% vs 58% of the mean). PGV declined with age (r = -0.130, P = 0.016). CONCLUSION:The high interindividual volume variation is mainly related to cysts. 10Pelagic Nitrogen Cycling in Jiaozhou Bay, a Model Study I: the Conceptual Model显示文摘A zero dimensional box model (PNCMjzb) with six state variables (ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic nitrogen, phytoplankton, zooplankton and detritus) was developed to study nitrogen cycling in the Jiaozhou Bay pelagic ecosystem. The dominant processes within these compartments are considered with nitrogen as flow currency. Phytoplankton and zooplankton are treated as separate state variables, assuming that the species composition was dominated by two or three species the dynamic constants of which are similar and that they represent the entire plankton community. The microbial loop has not been integrated explicitly in the model. The turnover of bacteria is included implicitly in processes such as detritus decomposition, DON remineralization, pelagic nitrification and denitrification. The model is driven by two forcing variables, viz. water temperature and light intensity. Historical data from the1980s and 1990s were compiled and used for model calibration. In this paper (part I), the consideration of every main compartment in the model is interpreted in detail. And the applied equations and parameters are presented. 11Scoring the collective effects of SNPs: association of minor alleles with complex traits in model organisms显示文摘It has long been assumed that most parts of a genome and most genetic variations or SNPs are non-functional with regard to reproductive fitness.However,the collective effects of SNPs have yet to be examined by experimental science.We here developed a novel approach to examine the relationship between traits and the total amount of SNPs in panels of genetic reference populations.We identified the minor alleles(MAs)in each panel and the MA content(MAC)that each inbred strain carried for a set of SNPs with genotypes determined in these panels.MAC was nearly linearly linked to quantitative variations in numerous traits in model organisms,including life span,tumor susceptibility,learning and memory,sensitivity to alcohol and anti-psychotic drugs,and two correlated traits poor reproductive fitness and strong immunity.These results suggest that the collective effects of SNPs are functional and do affect reproductive fitness.YUAN DeJian ZHU ZuoBin TAN XiaoHua LIANG Jie ZENG Chen ZHANG JieGen CHEN Jun MA Long DOGAN Ayca BROCKMANN Gudrun GOLDMANN Oliver MEDINA Eva RICE Amanda D.
