2Electromagnetic induction mapping at varied soil moisture reveals field-scale soil textural patterns and gravel lenses显示文摘Knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil textural properties is important for determining soil moisture storage and soil hydraulic transport properties.Capturing field heterogeneity without exhaustive sampling and costly sample analysis is difficult. Our objective was to employ electromagnetic induction(EMI) mapping in low apparent electrical conductivity(EC_a) soils at varying soil water contents to capture time invariant properties such as soil texture. Georeferenced EC_ameasurements were taken using a ground conductivity meter on six different days where volumetric water content(θ_v) varied from 0.11 to 0.23. The 50 m × 50 m field included a subsurface gravelly patch in an otherwise homogeneous silt-loam alluvial soil.Ordinary block kriging predicted EC_aat unsampled areas to produce 1-m resolution maps. Temporal stability analysis was used to divide the field into three distinct EC_a regions. Subsequent ground-truthing confirmed the lowest conductivity region correlated with coarse textured soil parent materials associated with a former high-energy alluvial depositional area. Combining maps using temporal stability analysis gives the clearest image of the textural difference. 3Carbon dioxide conversion to valuable chemical products over composite catalytic systems显示文摘This paper reports an experimental study on catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol,ethanol and acetic acid.Catalysts having different catalytic functions were synthesized and combined in different ways to enhance the selectivity to desired products.The combined catalyst system possessed the following functions:methanol synthesis,Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,water-gas-shift and hydrogenation.Results showed that the methods of integrating these catalytic functions played an important role in achieving the desired product selectivity.We speculate that if methanol synthesis sites were located adjacent to the C-C chain growth sites,the formation rate of C_2 oxygenates would be enhanced.The advantage of using a high temperature methanol catalyst PdZnAl in the combined catalyst system was demonstrated.In the presence of PdZnAl catalyst,the combined catalyst system was stable at 380°C.It was observed that,at high temperature,kinetics favored oxygenate formation.The results implied that the process can be intensified by operating at high temperature using Pd-based methanol synthesis catalyst.Steam reforming of the byproduct organics was demonstrated as a means to provide supplemental hydrogen.Preliminary process design,simulation,and economic analysis of the proposed CO_2 conversion process were carried out.Economic analysis indicates how ethanol production cost was affected by the price of CO_2 and hydrogen.Robert A.Dagle Jianli Hu Susanne B.Jones Wayne Wilcox John G.Frye James F.White Juyuan Jiang Yong Wang 2013Journal of Energy Chemistry2013,22,3:2

13The glassy solid as a statistical ensemble of crystalline microstates显示文摘We present an alternative and,for the purpose of non-crystalline materials design,a more suitable description of covalent and ionic glassy solids as statistical ensembles of crystalline local minima on the potential energy surface.Motivated by the concept of partially broken ergodicity,we analytically formulate the set of approximations under which the structural features of ergodic systems such as the radial distribution function(RDF)and powder X-ray diffraction(XRD)intensity can be rigorously expressed as statistical ensemble averages over different local minima.Validation is carried out by evaluating these ensemble averages for elemental Si and SiO_(2) over the local minima obtained through the first-principles random structure sampling that we performed using relatively small simulation cells,thereby restricting the sampling to a set of predominantly crystalline structures.The comparison with XRD and RDF from experiments(amorphous silicon)and molecular dynamics simulations(glassy SiO_(2))shows excellent agreement,thus supporting the ensemble picture of glasses and opening the door to fully predictive description without the need for experimental inputs.Eric B.Jones Vladan Stevanović 2020npj Computational Materials2020,,1:0

17Modeling temperature and moisture dependent emissions of carbon dioxide and methane from drying dairy cow manure显示文摘Greenhouse gas emissions due to biological degradation processes of animal wastes are significant sources of air pollution from agricultural areas. The major environmental controls on these microbe-induced gas fluxes are temperature and moisture content. The objective of this study was to model the effects of temperature and moisture content on emissions of CO2 and CH4 during the ambient drying process of dairy manure under controlled conditions. Gas emissions were continuously recorded over 15 d with paired fully automated closed dynamic chambers coupled with a Fourier Transformed Infrared gas analyzer. Water content and temperature were measured and monitored with capacitance sensors. In addition, on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15, p H, moisture content, dissolved organic carbon and total carbon(TC) were determined. An empirical model derived from the Arrhenius equation confirmed high dependency of carbon emissions on temperature and moisture content. Results indicate that for the investigated dairy manure, 6.83% of TC was lost in the form of CO2 and 0.047% of TC was emitted as CH4.Neglecting the effect of temperature, the moisture contents associated with maximum gas emissions were estimated as0.75 and 0.79 g$g–1 for CO2 and CH4, respectively.Enzhu HU Pakorn SUTITARNNONTR Markus TULLER Scott B.JONES 2018Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering2018,5,2:0
