Diabetes and peripheral artery disease:A review显示文摘Peripheral arterial disease(PAD)refers to partial or complete occlusion of the peripheral vessels of the upper and lower limbs. It usually occurs as part of systemic atherosclerosis in the coronary and cerebral arteries. The prevalence of PAD is expected to continue to increase in the foreseeable future owing to the rise in the occurrence of its major risk factors.Nonhealing ulcers, limb amputation and physical disability are some of its major complications.Diabetes mellitus(DM)remains a major risk for PAD,with DM patients having more than two-fold increased prevalence of PAD compared with the general population. The clinical presentation in people with DM also differs slightly from that in the general population. In addition,PAD in DM may lead to diabetic foot ulcers(DFUs),which precipitate hyperglycaemic emergencies and result in increased hospital admissions, reduced quality of life, and mortality.Despite the epidemiological and clinical importance of PAD,it remains largely under diagnosed and hence undertreated, possibly because it is largely asymptomatic.Emphasis has been placed on neuropathy as a cause of DFUs,however PAD is equally important. This review examines the epidemiology, pathophysiology and diagnosis of lower limb PAD in people with diabetes and relates these to the general population. It also highlights recent innovations in the management of PAD.David Olubukunmi Soyoye Olugbenga Olusola Abiodun Rosemary Temidayo Ikem Babatope Ayodeji Kolawole Anthony Olubunmi Akintomide 2021World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,6:10
Relationship between sonographically measured median nerve cross-sectional area and presence of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic subjects显示文摘BACKGROUND Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus resulting from direct damage by hyperglycemia to the nerves and/or ischemia by microvascular injury to the endoneurial vessels which supply the nerves. Median nerve is one of the peripheral nerves commonly affected in diabetic neuropathy. The median nerve size has been studied in non-Nigerian diabetic populations. In attempt to contribute to existing literature, a study in a Nigerian population is needed.AIM To evaluate the cross-sectional area(CSA) of the median nerve using B-mode ultrasonography(USS) and the presence of peripheral neuropathy(PN) in a cohort of adult diabetic Nigerians.METHODS Demographic and anthropometric data of 85 adult diabetes mellitus(DM) and 85 age-and sex-matched apparently healthy control(HC) subjects were taken. A complete physical examination was performed on all study subjects to determine the presence of PN and modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument(MNSI) was used to grade its severity. Venous blood was taken from the study subjects for fasting lipid profile(FLP), fasting blood glucose(FBG) and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1 c) while their MN CSA was evaluated at a point 5 cm proximal to(5 cmCATL) and at the carpal tunnel(CATL) by high-resolution Bmode USS. Data was analysed using SPSS version 22.RESULTS The mean MN CSA was significantly thicker in DM subjects compared to the HC at 5 cmCATL(P < 0.01) and at the CATL(P < 0.01) on both sides. The presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) further increased the MN CSA at the CATL(P < 0.05) but not at 5 cmCATL(P > 0.05). However, the severity of DPN had no additional effect on MN CSA 5 cm proximal to and at the CATL. There was no significant association between MN CSA and duration of DM and glycemic control.CONCLUSION Thickening of the MN CSA at 5 cmCATL and CATL is seen in DM. Presence of DPN is associated with worse thickening of the MN CSA at the CATL but not at5 cmCATL. Severity of DPN, duration of DM, and glycemic control had no additional effect on the MN CSA.Fredrick ANDrew Attah Christianah Mopelola Asaleye Adeleye Dorcas Omisore Babatope Ayodeji Kolawole Adeniyi Sunday Aderibigbe Mathew Alo 2019World Journal of Diabetes2019,10,1:8
A close look at the biology of SARS-CoV-2,and the potential influence of weather conditions and seasons on COVID-19 case spread显示文摘Background:There is sufficient epidemiological and biological evidence of increased human susceptibility to viral pathogens such as Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus and influenza virus,in cold weather. The pattern of outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)in China during the flu season is further proof that meteorological conditions may potentially influence the susceptibility of human populations to coronaviruses,a situation that may become increasingly evident as the current global pandemic of COVID-19 unfolds.Main body:A very rapid spread and high mortality rates have characterized the COVID-19 pandemic in countries north of the equator where air temperatures have been seasonally low.It is unclear if the currently high rates of COVID-19 infections in countries of the northern hemisphere will wane during the summer months,or if fewer people overall will become infected with COVID-19 in countries south of the equator where warmer weather conditions prevail through most of the year. However, apart from the influence of seasons, evidence based on the structural biology and biochemical properties of many enveloped viruses similar to the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2(aetiology of COVID-19),support the higher likelihood of the latter of the two outcomes.Other factors that may potentially impact the rate of virus spread include the effectiveness of infection control practices, individual and herd immunity, and emergency preparedness levels of countries. Conclusion:This report highlights the potential influence of weather conditions, seasons and non-climatological factors on the geographical spread of cases of COVID-19 across the globe.Kamoru A.Adedokun Ayodeji O.Olarinmoye Jelili O.Mustapha Ramat T.Kamorudeen 2020Infectious Diseases of Poverty2020,9,3:3
The Practice of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in subSaharan Africa and Antarctica:A White Paper or a Black Mark?显示文摘Objective:To explore the practice of PM&R in subSaharan Africa and Antarctica.Method:Medline searches, membership data searches, fax survey of medical schools,Internet searches, and interviews with experts.Result:The continents are dissimilar in terms of climate and government. However both Antarctica and subSaharan Africa have no PM&R training programs,no professional organizations,no specialty board requirements, and no practicing physicians in the field.Since there is no known disabled child on Antarctica and adults are airlifted to world-class health care, the consequences of this deficit are minimal there. However the 788,000,000 permanent residents of subSaharan Africa including approximately 78 million persons with disability are left unserved. Conclusion:Antarctica is doing fine.Africa is in a crisis.Local medical schools, hospitals doctors, and persons with disability;along with foreign volunteers, aid groups, and policymakers can impact the crisis. However government-specifically national ministries of health-is ultimately responsible for the health and wellbeing of citizens.Andrew J. 12ED-SWE:Event detection based on scoring and word embedding in online social networks for the internet of people显示文摘Online social media networks are gaining attention worldwide, with an increasing number of people relying on them to connect, communicate and share their daily pertinent event-related information.Event detection is now increasingly leveraging online social networks for highlighting events happening around the world via the Internet of People. In this paper,a novel Event Detection model based on Scoring and Word Embedding(ED-SWE)is proposed for discovering key events from a large volume of data streams of tweets and for generating an event summary using keywords and top-k tweets. The proposed ED-SWE model can distill high-quality tweets, reduce the negative impact of the advent of spam, and identify latent events in the data streams automatically. Moreover,a word embedding algorithm is used to learn a real-valued vector representation for a predefined fixed-sized vocabulary from a corpus of Twitter data.In order to further improve the performance of the Expectation-Maximization(EM)iteration algorithm,a novel initialization method based on the authority values of the tweets is also proposed in this paper to detect live events efficiently and precisely. Finally,a novel automatic identification method based on the cosine measure is used to automatically evaluate whether a given topic can form a live event.Experiments conducted on a real-world dataset demonstrate that the ED-SWE model exhibits better efficiency and accuracy than several state-of-art event detection models.Xiang Sun Lu Liu Ayodeji Ayorinde John Panneerselvam 2021Digital Communications and Networks2021,7,4:1

Enhanced graph-based fault diagnostic system for nuclear power plants显示文摘Scheduled maintenance and condition-based online monitoring are among the focal points of recent research to enhance nuclear plant safety. One of the most effective ways to monitor plant conditions is by implementing a full-scope,plant-wide fault diagnostic system. However, most of the proposed diagnostic techniques are perceived as unreliable by operators because they lack an explanation module, their implementation is complex, and their decision/inference path is unclear.Graphical formalism has been considered for fault diagnosis because of its clear decision and inference modules, and its ability to display the complex causal relationships between plant variables and reveal the propagation path used for fault localization in complex systems. However,in a graphbased approach,decision-making is slow because of rule explosion. In this paper,we present an enhanced signed directed graph that utilizes qualitative trend evaluation and a granular computing algorithm to improve the decision speed and increase the resolution of the graphical method. We integrate the attribute reduction capability of granular computing with the causal/fault propagation reasoning capability of the signed directed graph and comprehensive rules in a decision table to diagnose faults in a nuclear power plant.Qualitative trend analysis is used to solve the problems of fault diagnostic threshold selection and signed directed graph node state determination. The similarity reasoning and detection ability of the granular computing algorithm ensure a compact decision table and improve the decision result. The performance of the proposed enhanced system was evaluated on selected faults of the Chinese Fuqing 2 nuclear reactor. The proposed method offers improved diagnostic speed and efficient data processing. In addition, the result shows a considerable reduction in false positives, indicating that the method provides a reliable diagnostic system to support further intervention by operators.Yong-Kuo Liu Xin Ai Abiodun Ayodeji Mao-Pu Wu Min-Jun Peng Hong Xia Wei-Feng Yu 2019Nuclear Science and Techniques2019,30,12:1
Epidemiologic evidence linking oxidative stress and pulmonary function in healthy populations显示文摘Respiratory health in the general population declines regardless of the presence of pulmonary diseases.Oxidative stress has been implicated as one of the mechanisms involved in respiratory dysfunction. This review was to evaluate studies that relate oxidative stress factors with pulmonary function among the general population without prior respiratory illnesses. The search yielded 54 citations.Twenty-one studies qualified for incorporation in this review.Owing to the heterogeneity of the review, studies were discussed based on identified oxidative stress factors responsible for pulmonary dysfunction.Oxidative stress biomarkers, including gene polymorphisms of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2,heme oxygenase 1,glutathione S transferase, superoxide dismutase, and lipid peroxidation products were involved in lung function decline. In addition, the antioxidant status of individuals in reference to dietary antioxidant intake and exposure to environmental pollutants affected oxidative stress and pulmonary function,as indicated by forced expired volume in one second, forced vital capacity, and forced expiratory flow at 25%-75%.This review indicated that oxidative stress is implicated in the gradual decline of lung function among the general population, and gene polymorphism along the antioxidant defense line and/or their interaction with air pollutants reduce lung function.Different polymorphic forms among individuals explain why the rate of lung function decline differs among people.Dietary antioxidants have respiratory health benefits in antioxidant gene polymorphic forms. Therefore, the genetic composition of an individual may be considered for monitoring and identifying people at risk of respiratory illnesses.Lateef Olabisi Okeleji Ayodeji Folorunsho Ajayi Grace Adebayo-Gege Victoria Oyetayo Aremu Oluwadunsin Iyanuoluwa Adebayo Emmanuel Tayo Adebayo 2021Chronic Diseases and Translational Medicine2021,7,2:1

Quantification of wing and body kinematics in connection to torque generation during damselfly yaw turn显示文摘This study provides accurate measurements of the wing and body kinematics of three different species of damselflies in free yaw turn flights. The yaw turn is characterized by a short acceleration phase which is immediately followed by an elongated deceleration phase. Most of the heading change takes place during the latter stage of the flight. Our observations showed that yaw turns are executed via drastic rather than subtle changes in the kinematics of all four wings. The motion of the inner and outer wings were found to be strongly linked through their orientation as well as their velocities with the inner wings moving faster than the outer wings.By controlling the pitch angle and wing velocity,a damselfly adjusts the angle of attack. The wing angle of attack exerted the strongest influence on the yaw torque, followed by the flapping and deviation velocities of the wings. Moreover,no evidence of active generation of counter torque was found in the flight data implying that deceleration and stopping of the maneuver is dominated by passive damping. The systematic analysis carried out on the free flight data advances our understanding of the mechanisms by which these insects achieve their observed maneuverability. In addition, the inspiration drawn from this study can be employed in the design of low frequency flapping wing micro air vehicles(MAV's).Samane Zeyghami Ayodeji T.
