| 1 | Anterior resection for rectal carcinoma-risk factors for anastomotic leaks and strictures显示文摘AIM:To determine the incidence and factors responsible for anastomotic leaks and stricture following anterior resection(AR)and its subsequent management.METHODS:Retrospective analysis of data from 108 patients with rectal carcinoma who underwent AR or low anterior resection(LAR)to identify the various preoperative,operative,and post operative factors that might have influence on anastomotic leaks and strictures.RESULTS:There were 68 males and 40 females with an average of 47 years(range 21-75 years).The median distance of the tumor from the anal verge was 8 cm(range 3-15 cm).Sixty(55.6%)patients underwent handsewn anastomosis and 48(44.4%)were stapled.The median operating time was 3.5 h(range2.0-7.5 h).Sixteen(14.6%)patients had an anastomotic leak.Among these,11 patients required reexploration and five were managed expectantly.The anastomotic leak rate was similar in patients with and without diverting stoma(8/60,13.4%with stoma and 8/48;16.7%without stoma).In 15(13.9%)patients,resection margins were positive for malignancy.Ninteen(17.6%)patients developed anastomotic strictures at a median duration of 8 mo(range 3-20 mo).Among these,15 patients were successfully managed with per-anal dilatation.On multivariate analysis,advance age(>60 years)was the only risk factor for anastomotic leak(P=0.004).On the other hand,anastomotic leak(P=0.00),mucin positive tumor(P =0.021),and lower rectal growth(P=0.011)were found as risk factors for the development of an anastomotic stricture.CONCLUSION:Advance age is a risk factor for an anastomotic leak.An anastomotic leak,a mucin-secreting tumor,and lower rectal growth predispose patients to develop anastomotic strictures. | Ashok Kumar Ram Daga Paari Vijayaragavan Anand Prakash Rajneesh Kumar Singh Anu Behari Vinay K Kapoor Rajan Saxena | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,11: | 28 |

| 3 | Salt Tolerance Mechanisms and Approaches:Future Scope of Halotolerant Genes and Rice Landraces显示文摘All rice plant developmental stages are severely affected by soil salinity. Salinity-induced ionic and osmotic stresses affect stomata closure and gaseous exchange, and reduce transpiration and the rate of carbon assimilation, and hence decrease plant yield. Understanding the response of rice plants toward salinity stress at the genetic level and developing salt-tolerant varieties are the vital mandates for its effective management. This review described the present status of salt-tolerance achieved in rice by various mechanisms including the ion homeostasis(Na^+/H^+, OsNHX antiporters), compatible organic solutes(glycine betaine and proline), antioxidative genes(OsECS, OsVTE1, OsAPX and OsMSRA4.1), salt responsive regulatory elements(transcription factors, cis-acting elements and miRNAs) and genes ecoding protein kinases(MAPKs, SAPKs and STRKs). Further, the future perspective of developing salt-tolerant varieties lies in exploring halotolerant gene homologs from rice varieties, especially the landraces. Genetic diversity among rice landraces can serve as a valuable resource for future studies toward variety improvement through breeding and genome editing. | 4 | Versatile Piriformospora indica and Its Potential Applications in Horticultural Crops显示文摘Modern horticultural crop production systems target the exploitation of sustainable techniques for crop improvement while maintaining balance with the environment. Several beneficial microbes have been investigated and have yielded remarkable results. The endophytic fungus, Piriformospora indica, is one microbe group with the potential to offer numerous benefits and opportunities in modern horticultural crop production. This plant growth-promoting mycorrhizal fungus is of particular interest due to its beneficial implications in plant growth and development. The fungus has been experimentally proven to significantly improve water and nutrient/mineral absorption, early flowering, seed production/germination and plant photosynthetic capability, growth rates;especially in nutrient-deprived soils, alter the production of secondary metabolites, and promote adaptation, tolerance and/or resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. Its unique capability to be axenically cultured makes it feasible for research and application. These attributes in combinations with its broad host range, offer immense potential for this fungus for research in horticultural plant improvement. | 5 | Leptin-induced Notch and IL-1 signaling crosstalk in endometrial adenocarcinoma is associated with invasiveness and chemoresistance显示文摘BACKGROUND Obesity is a recognized risk factor for endometrial cancer (EmCa) and other cancer types. Leptin levels are significantly increased in obese individuals. Leptin-induced signaling crosstalk [Notch, Interleukin-1 (IL-1) and leptin outcome, NILCO] has been associated with breast cancer progression. This complex signaling crosstalk affects cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, apoptosis and chemoresistance. NILCO expression was previously detected in human EmCa. However, it is unknown whether leptin regulates NILCO and alters EmCa’s response to chemotherapeutics. It is hypothesized that leptin induces NILCO and increases aggressiveness and chemoresistance in EmCa cells. AIM To determine whether leptin induces NILCO molecules in EmCa affecting cell proliferation, aggressiveness and chemoresistance. METHODS Leptin’s effects on the expression of NILCO molecules [mRNAs and proteins for Notch receptors (Notch1-4), ligands (JAG1 and DLL4) and downstream effectors (survivin, Hey2), and leptin (OB-R) and IL-1 (IL-1R tI) receptors] was examined in EmCa cells (type I: Ishikawa, and HEC-1A, and type II: An3Ca and KLE) using Real-time PCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. In addition, the effects of leptin on cell cycle, proliferation and cell invasion were determined using cytometric analysis (Cellometer Vision CBA system), MTT cell proliferation and Matrigel-based invasion assays, respectively. Inhibitors of leptin (nanoparticlebound leptin peptide receptor antagonist-2, IONP-LPrA2), IL-1 (anti-IL-1R tI antibody) and Notch (siRNA interference RNA) were used to investigate NILCO’s effects on cell proliferation and invasion. Leptin’s effects on Paclitaxel cytotoxicity in EmCa cells was determined by the CCK8 and Cellometer-based Annexin V assays. RESULTS For the first time it was shown that leptin is an inducer of Notch in EmCa. Experimental data suggest that leptin induced the expression of NILCO molecules, promoted proliferation and S- phase progression, and reduced Paclitaxel cytotoxicity on EmCa cells. Leptin’s effects were higher in type II EmCa cells. The progression of this more aggressive form of the disease is associated with obesity. Remarkably, the use of the leptin signaling antagonist, IONPLPrA2, re-sensitized EmCa cells to Paclitaxel. CONCLUSION Present data suggest the notion that leptin-induced NILCO could be a link between obesity and EmCa progression and chemoresistance. Most aggressive type II EmCa cells were higher sensitive to leptin, which appears to increase proliferation, cell cycle progression, aggressiveness, and chemoresistance to Paclitaxel. Therefore, leptin and NILCO could be novel therapeutic targets for type II EmCa, which does not have targeted therapy. | 6 | Cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘AIM:To investigate cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:A neuropsychological test battery,including subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence ScaleRevised and Ⅲ,Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised,California Verbal Learning Test(CVLT),Stroop Color-Word Test,and Trail Making Test,which assessed verbal and visual short-and long-term memory,processing speed,logical reasoning,verbal intelligence,attention,and executive functioning,was administered to 13-to 19-year-old patients with IBD(n = 34;active disease n = 20).Depressive symptoms were measured with the Beck Depression Inventory.The findings were compared with peers with non-acute juvenile idiopathic arthritis(JIA;n = 23).Patients with coexisting psychiatric disorders were excluded.RESULTS:The IBD group,especially patients in the acute phase,made more perseverative errors in the CVLT test that assessed verbal memory than the JIA group(6.0 ± 4.3 vs 3.3 ± 2.9,P < 0.01),but no other differences between the IBD and JIA groups were observed in the neuropsychological tests.The difference was close to statistical significance,even when glucocorticoid medication was controlled for(P < 0.052).The IBD group had more depressive symptoms than the JIA group(7.9 ± 7.6 vs 4.0 ± 4.0,P < 0.05).Approximately one third of the IBD group had at least mild depressive symptoms,and those with acute illness had the highest scores.However,depressive symptoms were not related to the difference in the verbal memory test(perseverative errors in the CVLT) between the IBD and JIA groups.CONCLUSION:Adolescents with acute IBD may have mild verbal memory problems but no major cognitive deficits compared to peers with JIA. | Anu E Castaneda Annamari Tuulio-Henriksson Eeva T Aronen Mauri Marttunen Kaija-Leena Kolho | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,10: | 5 |

| 9 | 8Spheres微球联合碘油TACE治疗原发性肝癌的疗效及安全性显示文摘目的:探讨8Spheres适形栓塞微球联合碘油肝动脉化疗栓塞(TACE)治疗原发性肝癌的近期疗效及安全性。方法:收集我院原发性肝癌患者共64例。其中试验组(8Spheres栓塞微球+碘油栓塞)32例,对照组(单纯碘油栓塞)32例。比较两组患者介入治疗前及治疗后1周、1个月肝功能指标及甲胎蛋白(AFP)的变化。术后3个月、6个月评价两组患者肿瘤局部反应。同时比较两组患者术后并发症发生情况。结果:患者基线临床特征无统计学差异(均P〉0.05)。术后1个月两组患者肝功能均改善,但试验组肝功能指标ALT、AST和TBiL明显优于对照组(均P〈0.05)。术后1周及1个月AFP水平显著下降(均P〈0.01),且术后1个月试验组AFP水平显著低于对照组(P〈0.01)。术后6个月试验组肿瘤客观反应率(P〈0.05)及疾病控制率(P〈0.01)均显著高于对照组,且试验组疾病进展率显著低于对照组(P〈0.01)。两组患者术后总并发症发生率无显著性差异(P〉0.05)。结论:与单纯碘油TACE相比,8Spheres栓塞微球联合碘油TACE对治疗原发性肝癌近期疗效显著,安全性较高,值得临床推广。其远期临床疗效及生存获益有待进一步随访研究。 | 吴宝林 周军 凌公豪 Anu John 龙清云 | 2018 | 武汉大学学报(医学版)2018,39,2: | 4 |

The ENc value, relationship between AT bias and GC bias, Random synonymous codon usage(RSCU) and CAI all showed that codon bias usage existed in MaBSP gene.[Conclusion] The codon usage patterns of MaBSP gene is principally influenced by natural selection in the third position. | 14 | Census of Kuiper Comets-the TAOS Project显示文摘Cometary nuclei, the remnant icy bodies of planet formation, located at the outer edge of the solar system, are relatively poorly studied because of their small sizes and thus faintness. Thus far more than a hundred large members (size about 100 km) of this cometary population in the Kuiper belt have been identified. Smaller bodies (10 km) are much too faint to image directly and their number so far can only be extrapolated on theoretical grounds. The Taiwan-America Occultation Survey (TAOS) will conduct a census of the number of Kuiper belt objects down to a few km size by monitoring chance stellar occultations by these cometary nuclei. We will set up an array of small (50cm), wide-field (f/1 9) telescopes, each equipped with a 2K squared CCD camera, along a 7 km baseline in central Taiwan at an elevation above ~ 3000 m. The robot telescopes will operate in a coincidence mode, so the sequence and timing of any candidate occultation event can be recorded and distinguished against a false detection. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Central University, and the Academia Sinica, will each contribute one telescope system. Researchers from an international variety of institutes are also participating in the project. Our experiment provides the only means to study the cometary population in the small-sized end of the distrbution. | 17 | Alterations in the polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule and retinal ganglion cell density in mice with diabetic retinopathy显示文摘AIM:To investigate the impact of polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule(PSA-NCAM)on the survival of retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)in the experimentally induced diabetes in mice.METHODS:Diabetes was induced in 2.5 months old Swiss Webster mice by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin(STZ,90 mg/kg)once daily for two consecutive days.Examination of the proteins of interest in the retinas from diabetic mice at 2mo after diabetes induction was performed using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis.RGCs were counted in the wholemounted retinas,and Brn3a marker was used.RESULTS:Examination of retinas from diabetic mice at 2mo after diabetes induction revealed a considerable reduction in RGC density.Our experiments also demonstrated a redistribution of PSA-NCAM in the retina of diabetic animals.PSA-NCAM immunoreactivity was diminished in the inner part of the retina where RGCs were located.In contrast,an enhanced PSA-NCAM immunoreactivity was detected in the outer layers of the retina.PSA-NCAM signal was co-localized with glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity in the Müller cell branches.Previous studies have shown that matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9)is responsible for the reduction in PSA-NCAM levels in neuronal cells.The reduced levels of PSA-NCAM in inner layers(nerve fiber layer,ganglion cell layer)were accompanied by the increased expression of MMP-9.In contrast,in the outer retinal layers,the expression of MMP-9 was much less pronounced.CONCLUSION:MMP-9 induces PSA-NCAM shedding in the inner part of the retina and the decreased level of PSA-NCAM in the inner part of the retina might be,at least in part,responsible for the loss of RGCs in diabetic mice. | Natalia Lobanovskaya Monika Jürgenson Anu Aonurm-Helm Alexander Zharkovsky | 2018 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2018,11,10: | 2 |
