1Numerical and experimental direct shear tests for coarse-grained soils显示文摘The presence of particles larger than the permissible dimensions of conventional laboratory specimens causes difficulty in the determination of shear strength of coarse-grained soils. In this research, the influence of particle size on shear strength of coarse-grained soils was investigated by resorting to experimental tests in different scale and numerical simulations based on discrete element method (DEM). Experimental tests on such soil specimens were based on using the techniques designated as 'parallel' and 'scalping' to prepare gradation of samples in view of the limitation of laboratory specimen size. As a second approach, the direct shear test was numerically simulated on assemblies of elliptical particles. The behaviors of samples under experimental and numerical tests are presented and compared, indicating that the modification of sample gradation has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils. It is noted that the shear strengths of samples produced by the scalping method are higher than samples by the parallel method. The scalping method for preparing specimens for direct shear test is therefore recommended. 3Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and thyroid dysfunction:A systematic review显示文摘Thyroid hormones are totally involved in the regulation of body weight, lipid metabolism, and insulin resistance. Therefore it is anticipated that thyroid hormones may have a role in the pathogenesis of non alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and non alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH). In this study, we reviewed the current literature on the association between thyroid dysfunction and NAFLD/NASH. A search for English language medical literature reporting an association between thyroid dysfunction and NAFLD/NASH in humans was conducted across PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and Scopus in August, 2013. Out of 140 studies initially identified through the search, 11 relevant articles were included in the final review. Thyroid dysfunctions in the form of overt or subclinical hypothyroidism are prevalent among patients with NAFLD/NASH. Hypothyroidism appears to be an independent risk factor for NAFLD/NASH in some studies; however, other newly published studies failed to find such anassociation. 4Current and emerging pharmacological therapy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘The main treatment of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is life style modification including weight reduction and dietary regimen.Majority of patients are safely treated with this management and pharmacologic interventions are not recommended. However, a subgroup of NAFLD patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) who cannot achieve goals of life style modification may need pharmacological therapy. One major obstacle is measurement of histological outcome by liver biopsy which is an invasive method and is not recommended routinely in these patients. Several medications, mainly targeting baseline mechanism of NAFLD, have been investigated in clinical trials for treatment of NASH with promising results. At present, only pioglitazone acting as insulin sensitizing agent and vitamin E as an antioxidant have been recommended for treatment of NASH by international guidelines. Lipid lowering agents including statins and fibrates, pentoxifylline, angiotensin receptor blockers, ursodeoxycholic acid, probiotics and synbiotics are current agents with beneficial effects for treatment of NASH but have not been approved yet. Several emerging medications are in development for treatment of NASH. Obeticholic acid, liraglutide, elafibranor, cenicriviroc and aramchol have been tested in clinical trials or are completing trials. These anatomical and functional changes predispose to complications like peritonitis,encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis and ultrafiltration failure. In recent years, 'biocompatible' and glucosesparing PD regimens have been developed to minimize damage to the peritoneal membrane. Can the use of these more expensive solutions be justified on current evidence? 6Epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection among the healthy population in Iran and countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region:A systematic review of prevalence and risk factors显示文摘AIM:To investigate the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection among the healthy asymptomatic population in Iran and countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region.METHODS:A computerized English language literature search of Pub Med,ISI Web of Science,Scopus,and Google Scholar was performed in September 2013.The terms,'Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office(EMRO)'and'Helicobacter pylori','H.pylori'and'prevalence'were used as key words in titles and/or abstracts.A complementary literature search was also performed in the following countries:Afghanistan,Bahrain,Djibouti,Egypt,Iran,Iraq,Jordan,Kuwait,Lebanon,Libya,Morocco,Oman,Pakistan,Palestine,Qatar,Saudi Arabia,Somalia,Sudan,Syria,Tunisia,The United Arab Emirates,and Yemen.RESULTS:In the electronic search,a total of 308 articles were initially identified.Of these articles,26 relevant articles were identified and included in the study.There were 10 studies from Iran,5 studies from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,4 studies from Egypt,2 from the United Arab Emirates,and one study from Libya,Oman,Tunisia,and Lebanon,respectively.The overall prevalence of H.pylori infection in Iran,irrespective of time and age group,ranged from 30.6%to 82%.The overall prevalence of H.pylori infection,irrespective of time and age group,in other EMRO countries ranged from 22%to 87.6%.CONCLUSION:The prevalence of H.pylori in EMRO countries is still high in the healthy asymptomatic population.Strategies to improve sanitary facilities,educational status,and socioeconomic status should be implemented to minimize H.pylori infection.Ahad Eshraghian 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46:8
7Micromechanics of breakage in sharp-edge particles using combined DEM and FEM显示文摘By combining DEM(Discrete Element Method)and FEM(Finite Element Method),a model is established to simulate the breakage of two-dimensional sharp-edge particles,in which the simulated particles are assumed to have no cracks.Particles can,however,crush during different stages of the numerical analysis,if stress-based breakage criteria are fulfilled inside the particles.With this model,it is possible to study the influence of particle breakage on macro-and micro-mechanical behavior of simulated angular materials.Two series of tests,with and without breakable particles,are simulated under different confining pressures based on conditions of biaxial tests.The results,presented in terms of micromechanical behavior for different confining pressures,are compared with macroparameters.The influence of particle breakage on microstructure of sharp-edge materials is discussed and the related confining pressure effects are investigated.Breakage of particles in rockfill materials are shown to reduce the anisotropy coefficients of the samples and therefore their strength and dilation behaviors.Ahad Bagherzadeh-Khalkhali Ali Asghar Mirghasemi Soheil Mohammadi 2008Particuology2008,6,5:8
8Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder after liver transplantation: Incidence, long-term survival and impact of serum tacrolimus level显示文摘AIM To investigate incidence and survival of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder(PTLD) patients after liver transplantation. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients who underwent liver transplantation at Shiraz Transplant Center(Shiraz, Iran) between August 2004 and March 2015. Clinical and laboratory data of patients were collected using a data gathering form. RESULTS There were 40 cases of PTLD in the pediatric age group and 13 cases in the adult group. The incidence of PTLD was 6.25% in pediatric patients and 1.18% in adult liver transplant recipients. The post-PTLD survival of patients at 6 mo was 75.1% ± 6%, at 1 year was 68.9% ± 6.5% and at 5 years was 39.2% ± 14.2%. Higher serum tacrolimus level was associated with lower post-PTLD survival in pediatric patients(OR = 1.07, 95%CI: 1.006-1.15, P = 0.032). A serum tacrolimus level over 11.1 ng/mL was predictive of post PTLD survival(sensitivity = 90%, specificity = 52%, area under the curve = 0.738, P = 0.035). CONCLUSION Incidence of PTLD in our liver transplant patients is comparable to other centers. 9Investigating the potential of essential oils as penetration enhancer for transdermal losartan delivery: Effectiveness and mechanism of action显示文摘The effect of tea tree oil(TTO),cumin oil(CO),rose oil(RO)and aloe vera oil(AVO)on the skin permeation of losartan potassium(LP)was investigated.In vitro skin permeation studies were carried out using rat skin.The mechanism of skin permeation enhancement of LP by essential oils treatment was evaluated by FTIR,DSC,activation energy measurement and histopathological examination.Both concurrent ethanol/enhancer treatment and neat enhancer pretreatment of rat SC with all the oils produced significance increase in the LP flux over the control.The effectiveness of the oils as the penetration enhancers was found to be in the following descending order:AVO>RO>CO>TTO.However,only AVO was the only enhancer to provide target flux required to deliver the therapeutic transdermal dose of LP.FTIR and DSC spectra of the enhancer treated SC indicated that TTO,CO,RO and AVO increased the LP permeation by extraction of SC lipids.The results of thermodynamic studies and histopathological examination of AVO treated SC suggested additional mechanisms for AVO facilitated permeation i.e.transient reduction in barrier resistance of SC and intracellular transport by dekeratinization of corneocytes which may be attributed to the presence of triglycerides as constituents of AVO.It is feasible to deliver therapeutically effective dose of LP via transdermal route using AVO as penetration enhancer.Indu Vashisth Abdul Ahad Mohd.Aqil Suraj P.Agarwal 2014Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2014,9,5:7
10Hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport at tidal inlets of Salut Mengkabong Lagoon, Sabah, Malaysia显示文摘Salut-Mengabong Lagoon is located at the west coast of Sabah facing the South China Sea. At the bay side of the main inlet the lagoon splits into Salut and Mengabong Channels. Sediment dynamics at the inlets of the lagoon have recently received considerable attention. But any direct measurement of hydrodynamics and sediment flux are yet to be well documented. This study covers the field measurements of current velocity, water flux, suspended sediment concentration and sediment flux across the three transects (main inlet, Salut entrance and Mengkabong entrance) during typical spring and neap tidal cycles in southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon. Temporal variations and timeaveraged values of measured parameters are discussed. The inlets of Salut-Mengkabong Lagoon are found to be ebb-dominated. The time-averaged velocities during spring tidal measurements are found to be higher in the main inlet followed by Mengkabong entrance and Salut entrance. Suspended sediment concentration and sediment fluxes are substantially higher in spring tidal cycles compared to the same in neap tidal cycles. During spring tidal cycles, ebb tidal sediment fluxes are higher than the flood tidal fluxes. 11Gut microbiome in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease associated hepatocellular carcinoma:Current knowledge and potential for therapeutics显示文摘Metabolic diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)are rising in incidence and are an increasingly common cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).The gut microbiome is closely connected to the liver via the portal vein,and has recently been identified as a predictor of liver disease state.Studies in NAFLD,cirrhosis and HCC have identified certain microbial signatures associated with these diseases,with the disease-associated microbiome changes collectively referred to as dysbiosis.The pathophysiologic underpinnings of these observations are an area of ongoing investigation,with current evidence demonstrating that the gut microbiome can influence liver disease and carcinogenesis via effects on intestinal permeability(leaky gut)and activation of the innate immune system.In the innate immune system,pathogen recognition receptors(Toll like receptors)on resident liver cells and macrophages cause liver inflammation,fibrosis,hepatocyte proliferation and reduced antitumor immunity,leading to chronic liver disease and carcinogenesis.Dysbiosis-associated changes include increase in secondary bile acids and reduced expression of FXR(nuclear receptor),which have also been associated with deleterious effects on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism associated with progressive liver disease.Longitudinal experimental and clinical studies are needed in different populations to examine these questions further.The role of therapeutics that modulate the microbiome is an emerging field with experimental studies showing the potential of diet,probiotics,fecal microbiota transplantation and prebiotics in improving liver disease in experimental models.Clinical studies are ongoing with preliminary evidence showing improvement in liver enzymes and steatosis.The microbial profile is different in responders to cancer immunotherapy including liver cancer,but whether or not manipulation of the microbiome can be utilized to affect response is being investigated.Imaad Said Hassan Ahad Adnan Said 2022World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2022,14,5:6
12An Overview on SARS‑CoV‑2(COVID‑19)and Other Human Coronaviruses and Their Detection Capability via Amplification Assay,Chemical Sensing,Biosensing,Immunosensing,and Clinical Assays显示文摘A novel coronavirus of zoonotic origin(SARSCoV-2)has recently been recognized in patients with acute respiratory disease.COVID-19 causative agent is structurally and genetically similar to SARS and bat SARS-like coronaviruses.The drastic increase in the number of coronavirus and its genome sequence have given us an unprecedented opportunity to perform bioinformatics and genomics analysis on this class of viruses.Clinical tests like PCR and ELISA for rapid detection of this virus are urgently needed for early identification of infected patients.However,these techniques are expensive and not readily available for point-of-care(POC)applications.Currently,lack of any rapid,available,and reliable POC detection method gives rise to the progression of COVID-19 as a horrible global problem.To solve the negative features of clinical investigation,we provide a brief introduction of the general features of coronaviruses and describe various amplification assays,sensing,biosensing,immunosensing,and aptasensing for the determination of various groups of coronaviruses applied as a template for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.All sensing and biosensing techniques developed for the determination of various classes of coronaviruses are useful to recognize the newly immerged coronavirus,i.e.,SARS-CoV-2.Also,the introduction of sensing and biosensing methods sheds light on the way of designing a proper screening system to detect the virus at the early stage of infection to tranquilize the speed and vastity of spreading.Among other approaches investigated among molecular approaches and PCR or recognition of viral diseases,LAMP-based methods and LFAs are of great importance for their numerous benefits,which can be helpful to design a universal platform for detection of future emerging pathogenic viruses.Yasin Orooji Hessamaddin Sohrabi Nima Hemmat Fatemeh Oroojalian Behzad Baradaran Ahad Mokhtarzadeh Mohamad Mohaghegh Hassan Karimi‑Maleh 2021Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,1:4

14Experimental mass transfer coefficients in a pilot plant multistage column extractor显示文摘The volumetric overall mass transfer coefficients in a multistage column have been measured using axial dispersion model for toluene–acetone–water system. The effect of operating parameters on the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficients has been investigated for both mass transfer directions. The results show that the mass transfer performance is strongly dependent on rotor speed and mass transfer direction, although only slightly dependent on phase flow rates. In addition, empirical correlations to predict the overall mass transfer coefficients have been developed. 16Unique Characteristics of Vertical Carbon Nanotube Field-effect Transistors on Silicon显示文摘A vertical carbon nanotube field-effect transistor(CNTFET) based on silicon(Si) substrate has been proposed and simulated using a semi-classical theory. A single-walled carbon nanotube(SWNT) and an n-type Si nanowire in series construct the channel of the transistor. The CNTFET presents ambipolar characteristics at positive drain voltage(Vd) and n-type characteristics at negative Vd. The current is significantly influenced by the doping level of n-Si and the SWNT band gap. The n-branch current of the ambipolar characteristics increases with increasing doping level of the n-Si while the p-branch current decreases. The SWNT band gap has the same influence on the p-branch current at a positive Vd and n-type characteristics at negative Vd. The lower the SWNT band gap, the higher the current. However, it has no impact on the n-branch current in the ambipolar characteristics.
