2Effects of resveratrol on hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in embryonic neural stem cells显示文摘Resveratrol,a natural phenolic compound,has been shown to prevent cardiovascular diseases and cancer and exhibit neuroprotective effects.In this study,we examined the neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of resveratrol against hydrogen peroxide in embryonic neural stem cells.Hydrogen peroxide treatment alone increased catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities but did not change superoxide dismutase levels compared with hydrogen peroxide + resveratrol treatment.Nitric oxide synthase activity and concomitant nitric oxide levels increased in response to hydrogen peroxide treatment.Conversely,resveratrol treatment decreased nitric oxide synthase activity and nitric oxide levels.Resveratrol also attenuated hydrogen peroxide-induced nuclear or mitochondrial DNA damage.We propose that resveratrol may be a promising agent for protecting embryonic neural stem cells because of its potential to decrease oxidative stress by inducing higher activity of antioxidant enzymes,decreasing nitric oxide production and nitric oxide synthase activity,and alleviating both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage.Sibel Konyalioglu Guliz Armagan Ayfer Yalcin Cigdem Atalayin Taner Dagci 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,6:5
3General characteristics of patients with electrolyte imbalance admitted to emergency department显示文摘BACKGROUND:Fluid and electrolyte balance is a key concept to understand for maintaining homeostasis,and for a successful treatment of many metabolic disorders.There are various regulating mechanisms for the equilibrium of electrolytes in organisms.Disorders of these mechanisms result in electrolyte imbalances that may be life-threatening clinical conditions.In this study we defined the electrolyte imbalance characteristics of patients admitted to our emergency department.METHODS:This study was conducted in the Emergency Department(ED) of Uludag University Faculty of Medicine,and included 996 patients over 18 years of age.All patients had electrolyte imbalance,with various etiologies other than traumatic origin.Demographic and clinical parameters were collected after obtaining informed consent from the patients.The ethical committee of the university approved this study.RESULTS:The mean age of the patients was 59.28±16.79,and 55%of the patients were male.The common symptoms of the patients were dyspnea(14.7%),fever(13.7%),and systemic deterioration(11.9%);but the most and least frequent electrolyte imbalances were hyponatremia and hypermagnesemia,respectively.Most frequent findings in physical examination were confusion(14%),edema(10%) and rales(9%);and most frequent pathological findings in ECG were tachycardia in24%,and atrial fibrillation in 7%of the patients.Most frequent comorbidity was malignancy(39%).Most frequent diagnoses in the patients were sepsis(11%),pneumonia(9%),and acute renal failure(7%).CONCLUSIONS:Electrolyte imbalances are of particular importance in the treatment of ED patients.Therefore,ED physicians must be acknowledged of their fluid-electrolyte balance dynamics and general characteristics.Arif Kadri Balci Ozlem Koksal Ataman Kose Erol Armagan Fatma Ozdemir Taylan Inal Nuran Oner 2013World Journal of Emergency Medicine2013,4,2:3
4Understanding Nonverbal Communication Cues of Human Personality Traits in Human-Robot Interaction显示文摘With the increasing presence of robots in our daily life,there is a strong need and demand for the strategies to acquire a high quality interaction between robots and users by enabling robots to understand users’mood,intention,and other aspects.During human-human interaction,personality traits have an important influence on human behavior,decision,mood,and many others.Therefore,we propose an efficient computational framework to endow the robot with the capability of understanding the user’s personality traits based on the user’s nonverbal communication cues represented by three visual features including the head motion,gaze,and body motion energy,and three vocal features including voice pitch,voice energy,and mel-frequency cepstral coefficient(MFCC).We used the Pepper robot in this study as a communication robot to interact with each participant by asking questions,and meanwhile,the robot extracts the nonverbal features from each participant’s habitual behavior using its on-board sensors.On the other hand,each participant’s personality traits are evaluated with a questionnaire.We then train the ridge regression and linear support vector machine(SVM)classifiers using the nonverbal features and personality trait labels from a questionnaire and evaluate the performance of the classifiers.We have verified the validity of the proposed models that showed promising binary classification performance on recognizing each of the Big Five personality traits of the participants based on individual differences in nonverbal communication cues.Zhihao Shen Armagan Elibol Nak Young Chong 2020IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2020,7,6:3
5Multi-center evaluation of oxidation-reduction potential by the MiOXSYS in males with abnormal semen显示文摘According to the World Health Organization(WHO),oxidative stress(OS)is a significant contributor to male infertility.SeminalOS can be measured by a number of assays,all of which are either costly or time sensitive and/or require large semen volume andcomplex instrumentation.One less expensive alternative is to quantify the oxidation-reduction potential(ORP)with the MiOXSYS.In this international multi-center study,we assessed whether ORP levels measured by the MiOXSYS could distinguish semensamples that fall within the 2010 WHO normal reference values from those that do not.Semen samples were collected from 2092patients in 9 countries;ORP was normalized to sperm concentration(mV/10^6 sperm/ml).Only those samples with a concentration>1×10^6 sperm ml1 were in eluded.The results showed that 199 samples fell within the WHO no rmal refere nee range while theremaining 1893 samples did not meet one or more of the criteria.ORP was negatively correlated with all semen parameters(P <0.01)except volume.The area under the curve for ORP was 0.765.The ORP cut-off value(1.34 mV/10^6 sperm/ml)was able todifferentiate specimens with abnormal semen parameters with 98.1%sensitivity,40.6%specificity,94.7%positive predictivevalue(PPV)and 66.6%negative predictive value(NPV).When used as an adjunct to traditional semen analysis,ORP levels mayhelp identify altered functional status of spermatozoa caused by OS in cases of idiopathic male infertility and in male partners ofcouples sufferi ng recurre nt pregna ncy loss,and thereby directi ng these men to relevant medical therapies and lifestyle modificati ons.Ashok Agarwal Manesh Kumar Panner Selvam Mohamed Arafa Hiroshi Okada Sheryl Homa Aideen Killeen Basak Balaban Ramadan Saleh Abdullah Armagan Shubhadeep Roychoudhury Suresh Sikka 2019Asian Journal of Andrology2019,21,6:2
