6Evaluation of seismic potential in a longwall mine with massive sandstone roof under deep overburden显示文摘A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7 ML on the local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by the United States Geological Survey(USGS) in 2016.Further investigations by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) and Coronado Coal researchers have shown that this event was associated with geological features that have also been associated with other, similar seismic events in Virginia.Detailed mapping and geological exploration in the mining area has made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic activity.In order to use the geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and their energy potential, two primary components are needed.The first component is a long history of recorded seismic events with accurately plotted locations.The second component is a high density of geologic data within the mining area.In this case, 181 events of 1.0 MLor greater were recorded by the mine's seismic network between January, 2009, and October, 2016.Within the mining area, 897 geophysical logs, 224 core holes, and 1031 fiberscope holes were examined by mine geologists.From this information, it was found that overburden thickness, sandstone thickness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic locations.After the data was analyzed, a pattern became apparent indicating that the majority of seismic events occurred under specific conditions.Three forecast maps were created based on geology of previous seismic locations.The forecast maps have shown an accuracy of within 74%–89% when compared to the recorded 181 events that were1.0 MLor greater when considering three major geological criteria of overburden thickness of 579.12 m or greater, 6.096–12.192 m of sandstone within 15.24 m of the Pocahontas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving height of 4.572 m or less.Mark A.Van Dyke Wen H.Su Joe Wickline 2018International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,1:5

15Several Types of Similarity Solutions for the Hunter-Saxton Equation显示文摘We study separable and self-similar solutions to the HunterSaxton equation,a nonlinear wave equation which has been used to describe an instability in the director field of a nematic liquid crystal(among other applications).Essentially,we study solutions which arise from a nonlinear inhomogeneous ordinary differential equation which is obtained by an exact similarity transform for the HunterSaxton equation.For each type of solution,we are able to obtain some simple exact solutions in closed-form,and more complicated solutions through an analytical approach.We find that there is a whole family of self-similar solutions,each of which depends on an arbitrary parameter.This parameter essentially controls the manner of self-similarity and can be chosen so that the self-similar solutions agree with given initial data.The simpler solutions found constitute exact solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation,and hence are also useful in a mathematical sense.Analytical solutions demonstrate the variety of behaviors possible within the wider family of similarity solutions.Both types of solutions cast light on self-similar phenomenon arising in the HunterSaxton equation.Mathew Baxter Robert A.Van Gorder Kuppalapalle Vajravelu 2015Communications in Theoretical Physics2015,63,6:2

17Modular operation of microfluidic chips for highly parallelized cell culture and liquid dosing via a fluidic circuit board显示文摘Microfluidic systems enable automated and highly parallelized cell culture with low volumes and defined liquid dosing.To achieve this,systems typically integrate all functions into a single,monolithic device as a“one size fits all”solution.However,this approach limits the end users’(re)design flexibility and complicates the addition of new functions to the system.To address this challenge,we propose and demonstrate a modular and standardized plug-and-play fluidic circuit board(FCB)for operating microfluidic building blocks(MFBBs),whereby both the FCB and the MFBBs contain integrated valves.A single FCB can parallelize up to three MFBBs of the same design or operate MFBBs with entirely different architectures.The operation of the MFBBs through the FCB is fully automated and does not incur the cost of an extra external footprint.We use this modular platform to control three microfluidic large-scale integration(mLSI)MFBBs,each of which features 64 microchambers suitable for cell culturing with high spatiotemporal control.We show as a proof of principle that we can culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)for multiple days in the chambers of this MFBB.Moreover,we also use the same FCB to control an MFBB for liquid dosing with a high dynamic range.Our results demonstrate that MFBBs with different designs can be controlled and combined on a single FCB.Our novel modular approach to operating an automated microfluidic system for parallelized cell culture will enable greater experimental flexibility and facilitate the cooperation of different chips from different labs.A.R.Vollertsen D.de Boer S.Dekker B.A.M.Wesselink R.Haverkate H.S.Rho R.J.Boom M.Skolimowski M.Blom R.Passier A.van den Berg A.D.van der Meer M.Odijk 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:2
