2Epidemiology of civilian blast injuries inflicted by terrorist bombings from 1970-2016显示文摘An upsurge of terrorist activity has occurred in the past two decades. As part of this, explosive devices continue to be extensively deployed against civilians in wide-ranging environments. Bombings remain the leading worldwide cause of civilian fatalities due to terrorism. This demands an understanding of modern terrorist bombing trends to inform mitigation strategy. The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence and severity of bombings against civilian targets in diverse attack settings, and to establish corresponding blast injury profiles. Data was obtained from analysis of the Global Terrorism Database(GTD) and a meta-analysis of blast injury data derived from the PubMed database. Closed environment explosions were associated with significantly greater(p<0.05) mortality than in open spaces. 6Rare earth element(REE) geochemistry of phosphorites of the Sonrai area of Paleoproterozoic Bijawar basin,Uttar Pradesh,India显示文摘The rare earth element(REE) data from the Paleoproterozoic Bijawar basin,Sonrai phosphorites were used to interpret the depositional conditions of the phosphorites.The post archean Australian shales(PAAS) normalized REE patterns of the Sonrai phosphorites were characterized by negative Ce and positive Eu anomalies.Middle rare earth elements(MREE)-enrichment was a characteristic feature.Phosphorites showing the diagenetic effects on the REE patterns were limited.The observed Eu anomaly was indicative of an anoxic(or sulphate reducing) diagenetic environment of phosphate formation.Mixing of sea water and upwelling during the Paleoproterozoic was responsible for the recording of positive Eu and negative Ce anomalies in the Sonrai phosphorites.K.F.Khan Shamim A.Dar Saif A.Khan 2012Journal of Rare Earths2012,30,5:3

9Polyethylene glycol functionalized carbon nanotubes/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposite: An approach for significant drug release显示文摘This research work blooms the new idea of developing a safe and controlled drug releasing matrix using multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs).In aqueous solution,uniform and highly stable dispersion of MWCNTs was obtained after secondary functionalization with polyethylene glycol(PEG)which was studied by Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Solution casting method was used to prepare MWCNTs/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposite films and the effect of MWCNTs on physico-mechanical,thermal and water uptake properties of the nanocomposites were evaluated.Incorporation of MWCNTs into the porous gelatin-chitosan matrix showed interesting stiffness and dampness along with developed microfibrillar structures within the pore walls intended at being used in tissue engineering of bone or cartilage.A common antibiotic drug,ciprofloxacin was incorporated into nanocomposite matrix.The evaluation of the effect of MWCNTs on drug release rate by dissolution test and antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed.Sharp release of the drug was found at early stages(~1 h),but the rate was reduced afterwards,showing a sustained release.It was observed that for all microorganisms,the antibacterial activities of drug loaded MWCNTs/gelatin-chitosan nanocomposites were higher than that of drug loaded gelatin-chitosan composite films containing no MWCNTs.Comparative statistical studies by ANOVA techniques also showed remarkable difference between the antibacterial activities,exhibited by MWCNTs-incorporated and non-incorporated composite films.Sadia Sharmeen A.F.M.Mustafizur Rahman Mostakima M.Lubna Kh Samaher Salem Rafiqul Islam Mubarak A.Khan 2018Bioactive Materials2018,3,3:3
101-D coupled non-equilibrium sediment transport modeling for unsteady flows in the discontinuous Galerkin framework显示文摘A high-resolution,1-D numerical model has been developed in the discontinuous Galerkin framework to simulate 1-D flow behavior,sediment transport,and morphological evaluation under unsteady flow conditions.The flow and sediment concentration variables are computed based on the one-dimensional shallow water flow equations,while empirical equations are used for entrainment and deposition processes.The sediment transport model includes the bed load and suspended load components.New formulations for Harten-Lax-van Leer(HLL) and Harten-Lax-van Contact(HLLC) are presented for shallow water flow equations that include the bed load and suspended load fluxes.The computational results for the flow and morphological changes after two dam break events are compared with the physical model tests.Results show that the modified HLL and HLLC formulations are robust and can accurately predict morphological changes in highly unsteady flows.Farzam Safarzadeh MALEKI Abdul A.KHAN 2016Journal of Hydrodynamics2016,28,4:2
11Benchmarking the performance of Bayesian optimization across multiple experimental materials science domains显示文摘Bayesian optimization(BO)has been leveraged for guiding autonomous and high-throughput experiments in materials science.However,few have evaluated the efficiency of BO across a broad range of experimental materials domains.In this work,we quantify the performance of BO with a collection of surrogate model and acquisition function pairs across five diverse experimental materials systems.By defining acceleration and enhancement metrics for materials optimization objectives,we find that surrogate models such as Gaussian Process(GP)with anisotropic kernels and Random Forest(RF)have comparable performance in BO,and both outperform the commonly used GP with isotropic kernels.GP with anisotropic kernels has demonstrated the most robustness,yet RF is a close alternative and warrants more consideration because it is free from distribution assumptions,has smaller time complexity,and requires less effort in initial hyperparameter selection.We also raise awareness about the benefits of using GP with anisotropic kernels in future materials optimization campaigns.Qiaohao Liang Aldair E.Gongora Zekun Ren Armi Tiihonen Zhe Liu Shijing Sun James R.Deneault Daniil Bash Flore Mekki-Berrada Saif A.Khan Kedar Hippalgaonkar Benji Maruyama Keith A.Brown John Fisher III Tonio Buonassisi 2021npj Computational Materials2021,,1:2
12Numerical solution of the Saint-Venant equations by an efficient hybrid finite-volume/finite-difference method显示文摘A computationally efficient hybrid finite-volume/finite-difference method is proposed for the numerical solution of SaintVenant equations in one-dimensional open channel flows. The method adopts a mass-conservative finite volume discretization for the continuity equation and a semi-implicit finite difference discretization for the dynamic-wave momentum equation. The spatial discretization of the convective flux term in the momentum equation employs an upwind scheme and the water-surface gradient term is discretized using three different schemes. The performance of the numerical method is investigated in terms of efficiency and accuracy using various examples, including steady flow over a bump, dam-break flow over wet and dry downstream channels, wetting and drying in a parabolic bowl, and dam-break floods in laboratory physical models. Numerical solutions from the hybrid method are compared with solutions from a finite volume method along with analytic solutions or experimental measurements. Comparisons demonstrates that the hybrid method is efficient, accurate, and robust in modeling various flow scenarios, including subcritical, supercritical, and transcritical flows. 15Electrochemical determination of an anti-hyperlipidimic drug pitavastatin at electrochemical sensor based on electrochemically pre-treated polymer film modified GCE显示文摘An electrochemically pretreated silver macroporous(Ag MP) multiwalled carbon nanotube modified glassy carbon electrode(PAN-Ag MP-MWCNT-GCE) was fabricated for the selective determination of an antihyperlipidimic drug, pitavastatin(PST). The fabricated electrochemical sensor was characterized by cyclic voltammetry(CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). The fabricated electrode was employed in quantifying and determining PST through differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry(DPAdSV) and CV. The electrode fabrication proceeded with remarkable sensitivity to the determination of PST. The effect of various optimized parameters such as pH, scan rate(ν), accumulation time(t_(acc)), accumulation potential(U_(acc))and loading volumes of Ag MP-MWCNT suspension were investigated to evaluate the performance of synthesized electrochemical sensor and to propose a simple, accurate, rapid and economical procedure for the quantification of PST in pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids. 16基于膨胀实验数据获取角膜屈光手术后力学参数的方法初探显示文摘目的:基于离体膨胀实验获得的角膜顶点与压力数据,探索利用有限元方法获得屈光手术后角膜力学参数的方法。方法:取实验兔4只,左眼为手术眼,右眼为对照眼。行标准的LASIK术实验兔2只,仅制瓣未对角膜基质层消融的实验兔2只,分别于术后不同时间点实施离体角膜膨胀实验。在离体膨胀实验中,利用位移传感器、压力传感器和显微镜分别获得角膜顶点位移、角膜内压力及角膜正侧面轮廓图像。根据获得的角膜轮廓图像构建角膜几何模型,用二阶Ogden模型描述角膜的本构关系,通过有限元方法模拟膨胀实验,将计算结果与膨胀实验数据比对确定角膜的力学参数,分析屈光手术后饲养一定时间时角膜的力学特性。结果:角膜膨胀实验获得的角膜顶点位移与压力呈非线性关系。在相同压力下,术后饲养一定时间后的兔眼角膜顶点位移量比对照眼小。二阶Ogden模型可以较好地描述屈光手术后角膜的力学特性。屈光手术后角膜弹性模量较对照眼大。结论:基于整体膨胀实验数据,利用有限元方法模拟角膜膨胀实验反推屈光手术后角膜力学参数的方法是可行的。张迪 Muhammad A.Khan 秦晓 张海霞 李林 林丁 刘志成 2018中国医学物理学杂志2018,35,4:1

18Fast Online Diagnosis of Open-circuit Switching Faults in Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters显示文摘Flying capacitor multilevel(FCML)inverter is an attractive power converter topology which provides high-quality staircase output voltage waveforms by cascading flying capacitor cells.However,the large number of semiconductor devices utilized in the FCML inverters degrades the hardware reliability,which may constrain such converters from being applied in safety-critical applications.Targeting at open-circuit switching faults,a fast online fault diagnostic method for FCML inverters is presented.Conventional phase-shifted PWM(PSPWM),which can naturally balance the voltage across flying capacitors,is used as the modulation method in this work.Hence,to retain the simplicity feature of the PSPWM,the proposed diagnostic method is developed so that it does not require any voltage measurements of flying capacitors.Only the output AC voltage and current data along with the switching PWM signals from the microcontroller are needed to detect an open-circuit switching fault,and all such sensory data is typically available in the inverter,requiring no additional sensors or hardware for the implementation of this diagnostic method.The detection process takes 5% of the fundamental period of the inverter output signals to diagnose the faulty switch.Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed diagnostic method.Majid T.Fard Waqar A.Khan Jiangbiao He Nathan Weise Mostafa Abarzadeh 2020Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering2020,6,4:1

20Seismic risk assessment for developing countries: Pakistan as a case study显示文摘Modern Earthquake Risk Assessment(ERA) methods usually require seismo-tectonic information for Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment(PSHA) that may not be readily available in developing countries. To bypass this drawback, this paper presents a practical event-based PSHA method that uses instrumental seismicity, available historical seismicity, as well as limited information on geology and tectonic setting. Historical seismicity is integrated with instrumental seismicity to determine the long-term hazard. The tectonic setting is included by assigning seismic source zones associated with known major faults. Monte Carlo simulations are used to generate earthquake catalogues with randomized key hazard parameters. A case study region in Pakistan is selected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. The results indicate that the proposed method produces seismic hazard maps consistent with previous studies, thus being suitable for generating such maps in regions where limited data are available. The PSHA procedure is developed as an integral part of an ERA framework named EQRAM.
