| 1 | Distinguished Effects of Interannual Salinity Variability on the Development of the Central-Pacific El Ni o Events显示文摘El Nio events in the central equatorial Pacific (CP) are gaining increased attention,due to their increasing intensity within the global warming context.Various physical processes have been identified in the climate system that can be responsible for the modulation of El Nio,especially the effects of interannual salinity variability.In this work,a comprehensive data analysis is performed to illustrate the effects of interannual salinity variability using surface and subsurface salinity fields from the Met Office ENSEMBLES (EN3) quality controlled ocean dataset.It is demonstrated that during the developing phase of an El Nio event,a negative sea surface salinity (SSS) anomaly in the western-central basin acts to freshen the mixed layer (ML),decrease oceanic density in the upper ocean,and stabilize the upper layers.These related oceanic processes tend to reduce the vertical mixing and entrainment of subsurface water at the base of the ML,which further enhances the warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the El Nio event.However,the effects of interannually variable salinity are much more significant during the CP-El Nio than during the eastern Pacific (EP) El Nio,indicating that the salinity effect might be an important contributor to the development of CP-El Nio events. | ZHENG Fei 1,WAN Li-Ying 2,and WANG Hui 3 1 International Center for Climate and Environment Science (ICCES),Institute of Atmospheric Physics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100029,China 2 Key Laboratory of Research on Marine Hazards Forecasting,National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center,Beijing 100081,China 3 National Meteorological Center,Beijing 100081,China | 2012 | Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters2012,5,2: | 4 |
| 2 | Dynamical framework with blocking topography coordinates for atmospheric GCM and its validation显示文摘The dynamical framework with Blocking To-pography Coordinates (hereafter, BTC), which is suited tohandle the steep topography for the atmospheric generalcirculation models, is presented in this paper, together withits validation results. The integral properties of both the dif-ferential and finite-difference equations for the BTC dy-namical core are: gross mass conservation, quadratic con-servation for advection terms, Coriolis force does not changethe kinetic energy, conservation of total available energy. Theimproved nonlinear iteration scheme is utilized for thetime-integration. The energy conservation for BTC dynami-cal core is validated by using the integration results from9-layer and 21-layer version respectively. Comparison resultsshow that, the changes of the kinetic energy and total avail-able potential energy during the integration are quite closefor both the BTC dynamical framework and the dynamicalframework of IAP 9-level and IAP 21-level AGCM, and thismay suggest that the BTC dynamical core can be used forlong-term integration with good computational stability.Furthermore, the BTC dynamical core has the advantageover the terrain following (sigma) coordinates in its betterrepresentation of the influence of the large-scale topographyon the atmospheric general circulation. | 3 | Introduction and systematic assessment for IAP numerical annual climate prediction system显示文摘The IAP numerical annual climate predictionsystem has been presented in this paper. In order to evaluatethis annual prediction system, annual ensemble hindcastexperiments over a 21-year period from 1980 to 2000 havebeen done. Systematic assessment shows that this annualprediction system has higher predictability for summer cli-mate in tropic than in extra-tropic area, and higher predict-abilities over ocean than over land for the fields of precipita-tion, sea level pressure and surface air temperature; for 500hPa geopotential height field, the predictability assuming azonal distribution decreases from tropic to middle-high lati-tudes, and in China it is the highest among those of all fields.Correlation analysis shows that the prediction ability of IAPannual prediction system to summer temperature is higherthan that to precipitation, and the prediction skill can beremarkably improved by the correction system.
