| 1 | Angiogenic peptide hydrogels for treatment of traumatic brain injury显示文摘Traumatic brain injury(TBI)impacts over 3.17 million Americans.Management of hemorrhage and coagulation caused by vascular disruption after TBI is critical for the recovery of patients.Cerebrovascular pathologies play an important role in the underlying mechanisms of TBI.The objective of this study is to evaluate a novel regenerative medicine for the injured tissue after brain injury. We utilized a recently described synthetic growth factor with angiogenic potential to facilitate vascular growth in situ at the injury site.Previous work has shown how this injectable self-assembling peptide-based hydrogel(SAPH)creates a regenerative microenvironment for neovascularization at the injury site.Supramolecular assembly allows for thixotropy;the injectable drug delivery system provides sustained in vivo efficacy. In this study,a moderate blunt injury model was used to cause physical vascular damage and hemorrhage. The angiogenic SAPH was then applied directly on the injured rat brain. At day 7 post-TBI,significantly more blood vessels were observed than the sham and injury control group,as well as activation of VEGF-receptor 2,demonstrating the robust angiogenic response elicited by the angiogenic SAPH.Vascular markers von-Willebrand factor(vWF)andα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)showed a concomitant increase with blood vessel density in response to the angiogenic SAPH.Moreover, blood brain barrier integrity and blood coagulation were also examined as the parameters to indicate wound recovery post TBI.Neuronal rescue examination by NeuN and myelin basic protein staining showed that the angiogenic SAPH may provide and neuroprotective benefit in the long-term recovery. | Xiaotang Ma Agnieszka Agas Zain Siddiqui KaKyung Kim Patricia Iglesias-Montoro Jagathi Kalluru Vivek Kumar James Haorah | 2020 | Bioactive Materials2020,5,1: | 3 |
| 2 | Parameter Control of Genetic Algorithms by Learning and Simulation of Bayesian Networks——A Case Study for the Optimal Ordering of Tables显示文摘Parameter setting for evolutionary algorithms is still an important issue in evolutionary computation. There are two main approaches to parameter setting: parameter tuning and parameter control. In this paper, we introduce self-adaptive parameter control of a genetic algorithm based on Bayesian network learning and simulation. The nodes of this Bayesian network are genetic algorithm parameters to be controlled. Its structure captures probabilistic conditional (in)dependence relationships between the parameters. They are learned from the best individuals, i.e., the best configurations of the genetic algorithm. Individuals are evaluated by running the genetic algorithm for the respective parameter configuration. Since all these runs are time-consuming tasks, each genetic algorithm uses a small-sized population and is stopped before convergence. In this way promising individuals should not be lost. Experiments with an optimal search problem for simultaneous row and column orderings yield the same optima as state-of-the-art methods but with a sharp reduction in computational time. Moreover, our approach can cope with as yet unsolved high-dimensional problems. | Concha Bielza Juan A. | 4 | Disordered eating behaviors in type 1 diabetic patients显示文摘Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus are at high risk for disordered eating behaviors (DEB). Due to the fact that type 1 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic illnesses of childhood and adolescence, the coexistence of eating disorders (ED) and diabetes often affects adolescents and young adults. Since weight management during this state of development can be especially diff icult for those with type 1 diabetes, some diabetics may restrict or omit insulin, a condition known as diabulimia, as a form of weight control. It has been clearly shown that ED in type 1 diabetics are associated with impaired metabolic control, more frequent episodes of ketoacidosis and an earlier than expected onset of diabetes-related microvascular complications, particularly retinopathy. The management of these conditions requires a multidisciplinary team formed by an endocrinologist/diabetologist, a nurse educator, a nutritionist, a psychologist and, frequently, a psychiatrist. The treatment of type 1 diabetes patients with DEB and ED should have the following compo- nents: diabetes treatment, nutritional management and psychological therapy. A high index of suspicion of the presence of an eating disturbance, particularly among those patients with persistent poor metabolic control, repeated episodes of ketoacidosis and/or weight andshape concerns are recommended in the initial stage of diabetes treatment, especially in young women. Given the extent of the problem and the severe medical risk associated with it, more clinical and technological research aimed to improve its treatment is critical to the future health of this at-risk population. | Alejandra Larraaga Ricardo V García-Mayor María F Docet | 2011 | World Journal of Diabetes2011,2,11: | 2 |
