Stochastic modeling the effect of wind gust on dust entrainment during sand storm显示文摘After the passage of a cold front, spring in northern China the outbreak of strong wind is often accompanied by dust emissions.Owing to the coherent structure of wind gust, dust particles can effectively overcome the systematic descending air motion and penetrate into the middle and upper levels of the atmospheric boundary layer, and then propagate further and diffuse into the troposphere where ascending air motion prevails. Here,we consider the coherent structure of wind gust in LS models, and construct a model suitable for the dust entrainment under the dust-storm canopy. With the parameter of gust,we simulate the dust entrainment during dust storms, and test that the coherent structures of wind gust make the sand particles to reach the upper of the boundary layer.CHENG XueLing ZENG QingCun HU Fei 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,27:10
Recent Advances in Monsoon Studies in China显示文摘This review provides a synopsis of the major progress that has been made in monsoon studies in China and to further bridge the gap between the Chinese and international meteorological community. It consists of seven major sections. After the introduction, the second section begins with the global monsoon systems and their seasonal variation, based on some new methods proposed in recent years. Besides, some major intraseasonal features of East Asian monsoon, including the onset of South China Sea summer monsoon are discussed. In the third section, we review the interactions between ENSO and the East Asian monsoon, focusing in particular on the results of Chinese meteorologists that indicate the influence of ENSO on the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) is obviously different from that on the tropical monsoon. Besides the tropical Pacific, other ocean basins, such as the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, are also important to the East Asian monsoon, and this topic is discussed in the fourth section. In the fifth section, we address the role of land surface processes in East Asian monsoon. For example, we describe work that has shown more snow cover in spring on the Tibetan Plateau is followed by a weakened EASM and more summer rainfall in the Yangtze River valleys. The sixth section focuses on the influence of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere(SH) on EASM, demonstrating how the signal from the SH is likely to provide new clues for the seasonal forecasting of summer rainfall in China. Finally, in the seventh section, we concentrate on the interdecadal variations of EASM. In particular, we look at a significant interdecadal variation that occurred at the end of the 1970 s, and how our understanding of this feature could affect forecasting ability.XUE Feng ZENG Qingcun HUANG Ronghui LI Chongyin LU Riyu ZHOU Tianjun 2015Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2015,32,2:7
Formulation of a new ocean salinity boundary condition and impact on the simulated climate of an oceanic general circulation model显示文摘The salinity boundary condition at the ocean surface plays an important role in the stability of long-term integrations of an oceanic general circulation model(OGCM) and in determining its equilibrium solutions. This study presents a new formulation of the salt flux calculation at the ocean surface based on physical processes of salt exchange at the air-sea interface. The formulation improves the commonly used virtual salt flux with constant reference salinity by allowing for spatial correlations between surface freshwater flux and sea-surface salinity while preserving the conservation of global salinity. The new boundary condition is implemented in the latest version of the National Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics/Institute of Atmospheric Physics Climate Ocean Model version 2(LICOM2.0).The impact of the new boundary condition on the equilibrium simulations of the model is presented. It is shown that the new formulation leads to a stronger Atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC) that is closer to observational estimates. It also slightly improves poleward heat transport by the oceans in both the Atlantic and the global oceans.JIN JiangBo ZENG QingCun WU Lin LIU HaiLong ZHANG MingHua 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,3:7
Simulation of wind gust structure in the atmospheric boundary layer with Lattice Boltzmann Method显示文摘Cold fronts occur in northern East Asia during winter and spring. After cold frontal passage, airflow is downward and accompa-nying strong winds fluctuate significantly;this is termed wind gusts.Analysis of observation data shows that wind gust structure has coherent characteristics. This is important for entrainment of spring dust storms into the upper boundary layer, where they are transported great distances. The Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) is a computational fluid technique based on the Boltzmann transport equation. The LBM has been used to study complex motion such as turbulence, because it describes motion at the micro level. In this paper,Large eddy simulation is introduced in the LBM,enabling simulation of turbulent flow in the atmospheric boundary layer. The formation and development of wind gusts are simulated, and a coherent structure with a combination of wave and vortex is obtained. This explains the mechanism of soil erosion and sand entrainment by the coherent structure of wind gusts.CHENG XueLing HU Fei ZENG QingCun 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,10:7
Stability of weak solutions to climate dynamics model with effects of topography and non-constant external force显示文摘In this paper, a climate dynamics model with the effects of topography and a non-constant external force, which consists of the Navier-Stokes equations and a temperature equation arising from the evolution process of the atmosphere, was considered.Under certain assumptions imposed on the initial data and by using some delicate estimates and compactness arguments, we proved the L^1-stability of weak solutions to the atmospheric equations.LIAN RuXu ZENG QingCun JIN JiangBo 2018Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,1:6

Optimal reduction of anthropogenic emissions for air pollution control and the retrieval of emission source from observed pollutants Ⅰ. Application of incomplete adjoint operator显示文摘The ultimate solution to anthropogenic air pollution depends on an adjustment and upgrade of industrial and energy structures. Before this process can be completed, reducing the anthropogenic pollutant emissions is an effective measure. This is a problem belonging to 'Natural Cybernetics', i.e., the problem of air pollution control should be solved together with the weather prediction; however, this is very complicated. Considering that heavy air pollution usually occurs in stable weather conditions and that the feedbacks between air pollutants and meteorological changes are insufficient, we propose a simplified natural cybernetics method. Here, an off-line air pollution evolution equation is first solved with data from a given anthropogenic emission inventory under the predicted weather conditions, and then, a related 'incomplete adjoint problem' is solved to obtain the optimal reduction of anthropogenic emissions. Usually, such solution is sufficient for satisfying the air quality and economical/social requirements. However, a better solution can be obtained by iteration after updating the emission inventory with the reduced anthropogenic emissions. Then, this paper discusses the retrieval of the pollutant emission source with a known spatio-temporal distribution of the pollutant concentrations, and a feasible mathematical method to achieve this is proposed. The retrieval of emission source would also help control air pollution.Qingcun ZENG Lin WU 2018Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,7:3
Stochastic method to determine the scale and anomalous diffusion of gusts in a windy atmospheric boundary layer显示文摘In the atmospheric boundary layer, especially during strong wind period, the coherent structures are obvious and related to the direct interaction of the air masses with the ground. In this paper, we used the observation data during dust weather in Northwest Gansu to study the coherent structure and their ‘‘anomalous diffusion''. The structures in the atmospheric boundary layer included turbulent fluctuations and gusty wind disturbances, and could be denoted as ‘‘critical events' '. Their fractal dimensions were expressed by the complex index l of waiting times. Although the complex index can indicate the ability of the system to generate coherent structures, it has a strong dependence on the threshold marking the‘‘critical events' '. Hence, the continuous time random walk method was used to analyze the coherent structures. The scaling law of anomalous diffusion of coherent structures was obtained, and the diffusion scaling exponent H that indicated the ability of diffusion of different structures was analyzed. The exponents changed with structure scales which were affected by velocities and heights. At small scales, it was almost isotropic, and at large scales, the coherent structures were obvious and the diffusion was anomalous.Xueling Cheng Fei Hu Qingcun Zeng 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,34:3

Dynamical framework with blocking topography coordinates for atmospheric GCM and its validation显示文摘The dynamical framework with Blocking To-pography Coordinates (hereafter, BTC), which is suited tohandle the steep topography for the atmospheric generalcirculation models, is presented in this paper, together withits validation results. The integral properties of both the dif-ferential and finite-difference equations for the BTC dy-namical core are: gross mass conservation, quadratic con-servation for advection terms, Coriolis force does not changethe kinetic energy, conservation of total available energy. Theimproved nonlinear iteration scheme is utilized for thetime-integration. The energy conservation for BTC dynami-cal core is validated by using the integration results from9-layer and 21-layer version respectively. Comparison resultsshow that, the changes of the kinetic energy and total avail-able potential energy during the integration are quite closefor both the BTC dynamical framework and the dynamicalframework of IAP 9-level and IAP 21-level AGCM, and thismay suggest that the BTC dynamical core can be used forlong-term integration with good computational stability.Furthermore, the BTC dynamical core has the advantageover the terrain following (sigma) coordinates in its betterrepresentation of the influence of the large-scale topographyon the atmospheric general circulation. Finally, the correct-ness and reasonableness of the BTC dynamical core has beenfurther proved by the numerical simulation of the topogra-phy influence on the quasi-stationary planetary wave with21-layer version of BTC dynamical framework.LIN Zhaohui~1, ZHANG Ming~(1,2), LIANG Danqing~(1,2) WANG Aihui~1, ZHANG Dongling~1 & ZENG Qingcun~1 1. 11Introduction and systematic assessment for IAP numerical annual climate prediction system显示文摘The IAP numerical annual climate predictionsystem has been presented in this paper. In order to evaluatethis annual prediction system, annual ensemble hindcastexperiments over a 21-year period from 1980 to 2000 havebeen done. Systematic assessment shows that this annualprediction system has higher predictability for summer cli-mate in tropic than in extra-tropic area, and higher predict-abilities over ocean than over land for the fields of precipita-tion, sea level pressure and surface air temperature; for 500hPa geopotential height field, the predictability assuming azonal distribution decreases from tropic to middle-high lati-tudes, and in China it is the highest among those of all fields.Correlation analysis shows that the prediction ability of IAPannual prediction system to summer temperature is higherthan that to precipitation, and the prediction skill can beremarkably improved by the correction system. Furthermore, the comparison between annual and extraseasonal hindcastsindicates that precipitation hindcasted extraseasonally isbetter than that done annually, and the major discrepancyexists in middle-high latitudes.CHEN Hong, LIN Zhaohui & ZENG Qingcun International Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ICCES), Institute of Atnlospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Bcijing 100029, China 2003Chinese Science Bulletin2003,48,S2:2
