1Cancer stem cell markers CD133 and CD24 correlate with invasiveness and differentiation in colorectal adenocarcinoma显示文摘AIM:To verify that CD markers are available for detecting cancer stem cell populations and to evaluate their clinical significance in colon cancer.METHODS:Immunohistochemistry for CD133,CD24 and CD44 was performed on the tissue microarray of 523 colorectal adenocarcinomas.Medical records were reviewed and clinicopathological analysis was performed.RESULTS:In colorectal adenocarcinoma,128 of 523 cases(24.5%) were positive and 395 cases(75.5%) were negative for CD133 expression.Two hundred and sixty-four of 523 cases(50.5%) were positive and 259 cases(49.5%) were negative for CD24 expression.Five hundred and two of 523 cases(96%) were negative and 21 cases(4%) were positive for CD44 expression.Upon clinicopathological analysis,CD133 expression was present more in male patients(P = 0.002) and in advanced T stage cancer(P = 0.024).Correlation between CD24 expression and clinicopathological factors was seen in the degree of differentiation(P = 0.006).Correlation between CD44 expression and clinicopathological factors was seen in the tumor size(P = 0.001).Survival was not significantly related to CD133,CD24 and CD44 expression.CONCLUSION:CD markers were related to invasiveness and differentiation of colorectal adenocarcinoma.However,CD expression was not closely related to survival.Dongho Choi Hyo Won Lee Kyung Yul Hur Jae Joon Kim Gyeong-Sin Park Si-Hyong Jang Young Soo Song Ki-Seok Jang Seung Sam Paik 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,18:14
2Brain-derived neurotrophic factor mediates macrophage migration inhibitory factor to protect neurons against oxygen-glucose deprivation显示文摘Macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF)is a chemokine that plays an essential role in immune system function.Previous studies suggested that MIF protects neurons in ischemic conditions.However,few studies are reported on the role of MIF in neurological recovery after ischemic stroke.The purpose of this study is to identify the molecular mechanism of neuroprotection mediated by MIF.Human neuroblastoma cells were incubated in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium under oxygen-glucose deprivation(OGD)for 4 hours and then returned to normal aerobic environment for reperfusion(OGD/R).30 ng/mL MIF recombinant(30 ng/mL)or ISO-1(MIF antagonist;50μM)was administered to human neuroblastoma cells.Then cell cultures were assigned to one of four groups:control,OGD/R,OGD/R with MIF,OGD/R with ISO-1.Cell viability was analyzed using WST-1 assay.Expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),microtubule-associated protein 2(MAP2),Caspase-3,Bcl2,and Bax were detected by western blot assay and immunocytochemistry in each group to measure apoptotic activity.WST-1 assay results revealed that compared to the OGD/R group,cell survival rate was significantly higher in the OGD/R with MIF group and lower in the OGD/R with ISO-1 group.Western blot assay and immunocytochemistry results revealed that expression levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly higher,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly lower in the MIF group than in the OGD/R group.Expression levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly lower,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly higher in the ISO-1 group than in the OGD/R group.MIF administration promoted neuronal cell survival and induced high expression levels of BDNF,MAP2,and Bcl2(anti-apoptosis)and low expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax(pro-apoptosis)in an OGD/R model.These results suggest that MIF administration is effective for inducing expression of BDNF and leads to neuroprotection of neuronal cells against hypoxic injury.Su Hwan Bae Mi Ran Yoo Ye Yeong Kim In Kyung Hong Mi Hee Kim Seung Hak Lee Dae Yul Kim 2020Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,8:11
3Design and Implementation of Paired Pectoral Fins Locomotion of Labriform Fish Applied to a Fish Robot显示文摘In present,there are increasing interests in the research on mechanical and control system of underwater vehicles.Theseongoing research efforts are motivated by more pervasive applications of such vehicles including seabed oil and gas explorations,scientific deep ocean surveys,military purposes,ecological and water environmental studies,and also entertainments.However,the performance of underwater vehicles with screw type propellers is not prospective in terms of its efficiency andmaneuverability.The main weaknesses of this kind of propellers are the production of vortices and sudden generation of thrustforces which make the control of the position and motion difficult.On the other hand,fishes and other aquatic animals are efficient swimmers,posses high maneuverability,are able to followtrajectories,can efficiently stabilize themselves in currents and surges,create less wakes than currently used underwater vehicle,and also have a noiseless propulsion.The fish’s locomotion mechanism is mainly controlled by its caudal fin and paired pectoralfins.They are classified into Body and/or Caudal Fin(BCF)and Median and/or paired Pectoral Fins(MPF).The study of highlyefficient swimming mechanisms of fish can inspire a better underwater vehicles thruster design and its mechanism.There are few studies on underwater vehicles or fish robots using paired pectoral fins as thruster.The work presented in thispaper represents a contribution in this area covering study,design and implementation of locomotion mechanisms of pairedpectoral fins in a fish robot.The performance and viability of the biomimetic method for underwater vehicles are highlightedthrough in-water experiment of a robotic fish.Patar Ebenezer Sitorus Yul Yunazwin Nazaruddin Edi Leksono Agus Budiyono 2009Journal of Bionic Engineering2009,6,1:10
4Early treadmill exercise increases macrophage migration inhibitory factor expression after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion显示文摘The neuroprotective function of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in ischemic stroke was rarely evaluated.This study aimed to investigate the effects of early treadmill exercise on recovery from ischemic stroke and to determine whether these effects are associated with the expression levels of MIF and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) in the ischemic area.A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the ischemia and exercise group [middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)-Ex,n = 10),ischemia and sedentary group(MCAO-St,n = 10),sham-surgery and exercise group(Sham-Ex,n= 10),or sham-surgery and sedentary group(Sham-St,n = 10).The MCAO-Ex and MCAO-St groups were subjected to MCAO for 60 minutes,whereas the Sham-Ex and Sham-St groups were subjected to an identical operation without MCAO.Rats in the MCAO-Ex and Sham-Ex groups then ran on a treadmill for 30 minutes once a day for 5 consecutive days.After reperfusion,the hanging time tested by the wire hang test was longer and the relative fractional anisotropy determined by MRI was higher in the peri-infarct region of the MCAO-Ex group compared with the MCAO-St group.The expression levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region were upregulated in the MCAO-Ex group.Increased MIF and BDNF levels were positively correlated with relative fractional anisotropy changes in the peri-infarct region.There was no significant difference in the levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region between the Sham-Ex and Sham-St groups.Our study demonstrated that early exercise(initiated 48 hours after the MCAO) could improve motor and neuronal recovery after ischemic stroke.Furthermore,the increased levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region(penumbra) may be one of the mechanisms of enhanced neurological function recovery.All experiments were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in Asan Medical Center in South Korea(2016-12-126).Min Cheol Chang Chae Ri Park Seung Hwa Rhie Woo Hyun Shim Dae Yul Kim 2019Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,7:7

6Microbiology and risk factors for gram-positive Cocci bacteremia in biliary infections显示文摘Background:The rapid antibiotics treatment targeted to a specific pathogen can improve clinical outcomes of septicemia.We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of biliary septicemia caused by cholangitis or cholecystitis according to causative organisms.Methods:We performed a retrospective cohort study in 151 patients diagnosed with cholangitis or cholecystitis with bacterial septicemia from January 2013 to December 2015.All patients showed clinical evidence of biliary tract infection and had blood isolates that demonstrated septicemia.Results:Gram-negative,gram-positive,and both types of bacteria caused 84.1%(127/151),13.2%(20/151),and 2.6%(4/151)episodes of septicemia,respectively.The most common infecting organisms were Escherichia coli among gram-negative bacteria and Enterococcus species(Enterococcus casseliflavus and Enterococcus faecalis)among gram-positive bacteria.There were no differences in mortality,re-admission rate,and need for emergency decompression procedures between the gram-positive and gram-negative septicemia groups.In univariate analysis,previous gastrectomy history was associated with gram-positive bacteremia.Multivariate analysis also showed that previous gastrectomy history was strongly associated with gram-positive septicemia(Odds ratio=5.47,95%CI:1.19–25.23;P=0.029).Conclusions:Previous gastrectomy history was related to biliary septicemia induced by gram-positive organisms.This information would aid the choice of empirical antibiotics.Ik Hyun Jo Yeon-Ji Kim Woo Chul Chung Jaeyoung Kim Seonhoo Kim Eun Sun Lim Honggeun Ahn Seong Yul Ryu 2020Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2020,19,5:4
7The role of vasoepididymostomy for treatment of obstructive azoospermia in the era of in vitro fertilization:a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘This study comprises a systematic review and meta-analysis of micmsurgical vasoepididymostomy outcomes in epididymal obstructive azoospermia.A comprehensive literature search was performed using Medline,Embase,and the Cochrane library that included all studies related to microsurgical vasoepididymostomy.Keywords included “vasoepididymostomy,”“epididymovasostomy,”“epididymal obstruction,”and “epididymis obstruction.”Event rate and risk ratio (RR)were estimated.Patency rate and pregnancy rate were investigated.The analysis comprised 1422 articles,including 42 observational studies with 2298 enrolled patients performed from November 1978 to January 2017.The overall mean patency rate was 64.1%(95%confidence interval [CI]:58.5%-69.3%;F=83.0%),and the overall mean pregnancy rate was 31.1%(95%CI:26.9%-35.7%;I^2=73.0%).We performed a meta-analysis comparing the patency rate of bilateral microsurgical vasoepididymostomy and unilateral microsurgical vasoepididymostomy and found an RR of 1.38%(95%CI: 1.21%-1.57%;P <0.00001).A comparison of the site of microsurgical vasoepididymostomy showed that caudal or corpus area was favorable for patency rate (RR =1.17%;95%CI: 1.01%-1.35%;P =0.04).Patients with motile sperm in epididymal fluid exhibited an RR of 1.53%(95%CI:1.11%-2.13%;P =0.01)with respect to patency rate. Microsurgical vasoepididymostomy is an effective treatment for epididymal obstructive azoospermia that can improve male fertility. 10Shape Estimation of Soft Manipulator Using Stretchable Sensor显示文摘The soft robot manipulator is attracting attention in the surgical fields with its intrinsic softness,lightness in its weight,and safety toward the human organ.However,it cannot be used widely because of its difficulty of control.To control a soft robot manipulator accurately,shape sensing is essential.This paper presents a method of estimating the shape of a soft robot manipulator by using a skin-type stretchable sensor composed of a multiwalled carbon nanotube(MWCNT)and silicone(p7670).The sensor can be easily fabricated and applied by simply attaching it to the surface of the soft manipulator.In its fabrication,MWCNT is sprayed on a teflon sheet,and liquid-state silicone is poured on it.After curing,we turn it over and cover it with another silicone layer.The sensor is fabricated with a sandwich structure to decrease the hysteresis of the sensor.After calibration and determining the relationship between the resistance of the sensor and the strain,three sensors are attached at 120°intervals.Using the obtained data,the curvature of the manipulator is calculated,and the entire shape is reconstructed.To validate its accuracy,the estimated shape is compared with the camera data.We experiment with three,six,and nine sensors attached,and the result of the error of shape estimation is compared.As a result,the minimum tip position error is approximately 8.9 mm,which corresponded to 4.45%of the total length of the manipulator when using nine sensors.Jinho So Uikyum Kim Yong Bum Kim Dong-Yeop Seok Sang Yul Yang Kihyeon Kim Jae Hyeong Park Seong Tak Hwang Young Jin Gong Hyouk Ryeol Choi 2021Cyborg and Bionic Systems2021,,1:2
11Development of a Powder Extruder System for Dual-pore Tissue-engineering Scaffold Fabrication显示文摘In this study,we developed a powder extruder system that can extrude and deposit powder mixtures to overcome the reported limitations of conventional dualpore scaffold manufacturing methods.To evaluate the extrusion and deposition capability of the powder extruder system,3D tissue-engineering scaffolds with dual-pore characteristics were fabricated with a PCL/PEO/NaCl(polycaprolactone/polyethylene oxide/sodium chloride)powder mixture.In addition,to evaluate the fabricated scaffolds,their compressive modulus,morphology,and in-vitro cell activity were assessed.Consequently,it was confirmed that the proposed powder extruder system can fabricate dual-pore scaffolds with well-interconnected pores as well as arbitrary 3D shapes shown by the fabrication of a 3D femur-shape scaffold similar to the femur model.The results of the cell proliferation and Cell Counting Kit-8(CCK-8)assays,DNA content analysis and viability assays confirm that the dual-pore scaffold fabricated by the powder extruder system improves cell attachment,proliferation,and viability.Nae-Un Kang Myoung Wha Hong Young Yul Kim Young-Sam Cho Seung-Jae Lee 2019Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,4:2
