Pore Structure Regulation of Carboxyethylated Microfibrillated Cellulose Films显示文摘Carboxyethylation is a recent chemical pretreatment for preparation of microfibrillated cellulose(MFC).The carboxyethylated MFC film prepared by coating method has compact structure and high mechanical properties. In order to expand its application, three approaches including using organic solvents, different drying methods and cationic additives, have been adopted in this paper to enrich and regulate the pore structure of MFC film. The results show that all the approaches can improve the pore structure but decrease the mechanical properties of MFC film. When organic solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol and n-butanol were used to replace the water in MFC suspension or pre-dried MFC film, the pore structure of films were increased.Additionally, the film obtained by freeze-drying or air-drying after freezing in liquid nitrogen or freezer has high porosity but poor strength. The best drying process is to rewet dry MFC film, freeze in liquid nitrogen and then freeze-dry.Moreover,the addition of cationic polyelectrolytes or alkene ketone dimer(AKD)in MFC suspension can also significantly increase the film's porosity.Through the above approaches, the porosity of carboxyethylated MFC film can be regulated between 20% and 90%.Meican Li Jinghuan Chen Jingang Liu Zehong Xu Yanqun Su Ruijuan Zhang Yanfen Du 2020Paper And Biomaterials2020,5,2:5
Adverse effects of metal exposure on chemotaxis towards water-soluble attractants regulated mainly by ASE sensory neuron in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans显示文摘Chemotaxis to water-soluble attractants is mainly controlled by ASE sensory neuron whose specification is regulated by che-1 in Caenorhabditis elegans. Our data suggested that exposure to high concentrations of metals, such as Pb, Cu, Ag, and Cr, would result in severe defects of chemotaxis to water-soluble attractants of NaCl, cAMP, and biotin. Moreover, the morphology of ASE neuron structures as observed by relative fluorescent intensities and relative size of fluorescent puncta of cell bodies, relative lengths of sensory endings in ASE neurons, and the expression patterns of che-1 were obviously altered in metal exposed animals when they meanwhile exhibited obvious chemotaxis defects to water-soluble attractants. In addition, the dendrite morphology could be noticeably changed in animals exposed to 150 μmol/L of Pb, Cu, and Ag. Furthermore, we observed significant decreases of chemotaxis to water-soluble attractants in Pb exposed che-1 mutant at concentrations more than 2.5 μmol/L, and in Cu, Ag, and Cr exposed che-1 mutant at concentrations more than 50 μmol/L. Therefore, impairment of the ASE neuron structures and functions may largely contribute to the appearance of chemotaxis defects to water-soluble attractants in metal exposed nematodes.XING Xiaojuan, DU Min, ZHANG Yanfen, WANG Dayong Key Laboratory of Developmental Genes and Human Disease in Ministry of Education, Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Southeast University Medical School, Nanjing 210009, China. 2009Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,12:5
Eco-friendly PVA/Kaolin Clay Coating for Barrier Paper显示文摘The resistance of wood-fiber paper to water, grease, and water vapor is usually attained by immersing the base paper in hydrophobic oil, laminating with a plastic or metal film, or the application of a barrier coating. Oil impregnation and the addition of films may make the paper difficult to recycle or persistent in the environment owing to their strong binding force and nondegradability. Environmental concerns have attracted worldwide attention to eco-friendly barrier coatings. In this study, degradable polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) and kaolin clay pigment were used to prepare coatings that were applied to a base paper. By measuring the barrier properties of the coated paper, including the water absorptiveness(Cobb60 value), Hercules sizing degree, oil resistance(Kit rating), and water vapor transmission rate(WVTR), an optimal coating formulation and process were proposed. To examine the barrier mechanism of the PVA/kaolin clay coating, we characterized the coating microstructures using a scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and a mercury porosimeter. The results showed that the Cobb60 value and water vapor transmission rate of the coated paper decreased by 61.4% and 98.6%, respectively, compared with the base paper, for a pre-coating weight of 0.98 g/m^2 and a top-coating weight of about 3.23 g/m^2. Furthermore, the Hercules sizing degree rose by a factor of 337.2, while the oil resistance(Kit rating) increased from 0 to 12. The optimum drying temperature for a wet coating layer was found to be 170℃, and the optimum weight ratio of PVA to kaolin clay in the coating was determined to be 50∶50. It was assumed that the PVA/kaolin clay coating improved the smoothness of the paper considerably and decreased the pore size by filling the pores on the paper surface and forming an even film, thus enhancing the paper barrier performance. The coated paper also exhibited good repulpability.YanFen Du JinGang Liu JiaFu Wang YanQun Su HongCai Li BiSong wang RuiJuan Zhang 2017Paper And Biomaterials2017,2,2:3
Vascularized bone regeneration accelerated by 3D-printed nanosilicate-functionalized polycaprolactone scaffold显示文摘Critical oral-maxillofacial bone defects, damaged by trauma and tumors, not only affect the physiological functions and mental health of patients but are also highly challenging to reconstruct.Personalized biomaterials customized by 3D printing technology have the potential to match oralmaxillofacial bone repair and regeneration requirements.Laponite(LAP)nanosilicates have been added to biomaterials to achieve biofunctional modification owing to their excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity.Herein, porous nanosilicate-functionalized polycaprolactone(PCL/LAP)was fabricated by 3D printing technology, and its bioactivities in bone regeneration were investigated in vitro and in vivo.In vitro experiments demonstrated that PCL/LAP exhibited good cytocompatibility and enhanced the viability of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).PCL/LAP functioned to stimulate osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs at the mRNA and protein levels and elevated angiogenic gene expression and cytokine secretion. Moreover,BMSCs cultured on PCL/LAP promoted the angiogenesis potential of endothelial cells by angiogenic cytokine secretion.Then,PCL/LAP scaffolds were implanted into the calvarial defect model.Toxicological safety of PCL/LAP was confirmed, and significant enhancement of vascularized bone formation was observed.Taken together,3D-printed PCL/LAP scaffolds with brilliant osteogenesis to enhance bone regeneration could be envisaged as an outstanding bone substitute for a promising change in oral-maxillofacial bone defect reconstruction.Xiongcheng Xu Long Xiao Yanmei Xu Jin Zhuo Xue Yang Li Li Nianqi Xiao Jing Tao Quan Zhong Yanfen Li Yuling Chen Zhibin Du Kai Luo 2021Regenerative Biomaterials2021,8,6:3
Effects of MFC-modified GCC as Filler on the Opacity of Pulp Handsheets显示文摘Microfibrillated cellulose(MFC)was obtained by mechanical grinding of different pulps.MFC-modified ground calcium carbonate(GCC)was prepared in two different ways, designated MFC-GCC composite filler and MFC-GCC flocs filler. The opacity of pulp handsheets loaded with MFCmodified GCC was measured. The effects of MFC originated from different pulps, pretreatment method, and filler modification on the opacity of handsheets loaded with MFC-modified GCC were discussed. The results show that MFC originated from alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp(APMP)was optimal for improving the opacity of the handsheets and PFI grinding pretreatment for MFC provided a denser structure in the corresponding MFCAPMP-GCC floc filler while enzyme pretreatment was more effective in increasing the opacity of the filled paper.Under the experimental conditions, the opacity of handsheets increased from 81.0%to 82.7%when the unmodified GCC was replaced by an equivalent amount of MFCAPMP-GCC composite filler, while other properties were unchanged.Yanqun Su Junjie Liu Jingang Liu Ruijuan Zhang Jinghuan Chen Yanfen Du 2020Paper And Biomaterials2020,5,3:3
Induction of chemotaxis to sodium chloride and diacetyl and thermotaxis defects by microcystin-LR exposure in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans显示文摘Apart from the liver disruption, embryotoxicity and genotoxicity, microcystin (MC)-LR also could cause neurotoxicity. Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was explored as a model to study the neurotoxicity. In the present study, we provided evidence to indicate the neurotoxicity on chemotaxis to NaCl and diacetyl, and thermotaxis from MC-LR exposure to C. elegans. As a result, higher concentrations of MC-LR caused significantly severe defects of chemotaxis to NaCl and diacetyl, and thermotaxis. The neurotoxicity on chemotaxis to NaCl and diacetyl, and thermotaxis from MC-LR exposure might be largely mediated by the damage on the corresponding sensory neurons (ASE, AWA, and AFD) and interneuron AIY. The expression levels of che-1 and odr-7 were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) in animals exposed to MC-LR at concentrations lower than 10 μg/L, whereas the expression levels of ttx-1 and ttx-3 could be significantly (P < 0.01) lowered in animals even exposed to 1 μg/L of MC-LR. Moreover, both the chemotaxis to NaCl and diacetyl and the thermotaxis were more significantly reduced in MC-LR exposed mutants of che-1(p674), odr-7(ky4), ttx-1(p767), and ttx-3(ks5) than those in exposed wild-type N2 animals at the same concentrations.LI Yunhui YE Huayue DU Min ZHANG Yanfen YE Boping PU Yuepu WANG Dayong 2009Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,7:2
Preparation of Ultrafine Starch Particle and its Application in Paper Coating显示文摘Despite its biodegradability, adequate cohesive strength and comparatively low cost, the use of cooked starch as a paper coating binder is limited due to its high viscosity and serious negative impact on the gloss. Starch-based bio-latex with size in the nanometer or sub-micrometer range has been developed recently to overcome these shortcomings. In this study, ultrafine starch particle(UFSP) was prepared by mechanical milling using a DYNO mill in combination with light chemical pretreatment. Model coating colors containing different dosages of UFSP were applied to base paper and the properties of the coated papers were evaluated. The results showed that the UFSP was disc-shaped with a median particle diameter of 167 nm. Water retention capacity of the coating colors was improved considerably with the addition of UFSP, i.e., the water retention value decreased by nearly 40% when styrene-butadiene latex was replaced by UFSP at a dosage of 3 pph(per hundred parts of pigment). The high shear rate viscosities of the coating colors containing no more than 2 pph of USFP were similar to that of the control coating color at shear strain rate higher than 2000 s^(-1). The properties and performances of the coated papers were comparable to the control coated paper with single synthesized latex binder. The gloss and the print gloss of paper samples with or without USFP were 59.7% and 58.2%, 79.0% and 78.8%, respectively. Surface strength of paper samples with or without USFP were 0.96 and 0.90 m/s, respectively, while the ink absorptivity values were 34% and 33%. This study demonstrates a promising approach to obtain submicrometer sized starch for paper coating.JinGang Liu JiaFu Wang YanFen Du BiSong Wang HongCai Li YanQun Su JingHuan Chen 2017Paper And Biomaterials2017,2,1:2
An infrared thermographic analysis of the sensitization acupoints of women with primary dysmenorrhea显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To explore the sensitization acupoints of women with primary dysmenorrhea(PD)by comparing infrared radiation temperatures between acupoints and non-acupoints.METHODS:We tested 10 acupoints of every woman with PD and healthy subjects on premenstrual, menstrual, and postmenstrual days using an infrared imaging device. The primary outcome was the absolute value of body surface temperature difference(AVTD)between the left and right sides of the same testing point.RESULTS:A total of 58 PD patients and 57 healthy volunteers completed the test from May 2016 to May 2017.Compared with the healthy group,we observed a significant reduction and increase in the AVTD in Taichong(LR3)and Sanyinjiao(SP6),respectively,during menstrual days in the PD group(P=0.01;P=0.04);while during postmenstrual days, all AVTDs of Shuiquan(KI5),Diji(SP8),and Xuehai(SP10)were diminished in the PD group(P=0.01;P=0.03;P=0.01,respectively).No significant differences in AVTD were detected at any other points or testing times.CONCLUSIONS:Compared with the healthy group, the AVTDs of Taichong(LR3),Sanyinjiao(SP6),Shuiquan(KI5),Diji(SP8),and Xuehai(SP10)at menstruationrelevant points of PD patients were sensitized, providing a reference for the selection of acupoints in the treatment of PD.FAN Xisheng DU Xiaoyi PAN Lijia SONG Xiaodan LIU Jun ZHANG Juncha CHEN Hao GAO Yayu ZHANG Mingjian SHI Xuliang SHE Yanfen 2022Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2022,42,5:2
Unimodal productivity-biodiversity relationship along the gradient of multidimensional resources across Chinese grasslands显示文摘Resources can affect plant productivity and biodiversity simultaneously and thus are key drivers of their relationships in addition to plant-plant interactions. However, most previous studies only focused on a single resource while negle cting the nature of resource multidimensionality. Here we integrated four essential resources for plant growth into a single metric of resource diversity(RD)to investigate its effects on the productivity-biodiversity relationship(PBR)across Chinese grasslands. Results showed that habitats differing in RD have different PBRs—positive in low-resource habitats, but neutral in medium-and high-resource ones—while collectively,a weak positive PBR was observe d.However, when excluding direct effects of RD on productivity and biodiversity, the PBR in high-resource habitats became negative, which leads to a unimodal instead of a positive PBR along the RD gradient.By integrating resource effects and changing plant-plant interactions into a unified framework with the RD gradient, our work contributes to uncovering underlying me chanisms for inconsistent PBRs at large scales.Yanfen Wang Jianqing Du Zhe Pang Yali Liu Kai Xue Yann Hautier Biao Zhang Li Tang Lili Jiang Baoming Ji Xingliang Xu Jing Zhang Ronghai Hu Shutong Zhou Fang Wang Rongxiao Che Di Wang Chaoting Zhou Xiaoyong Cui Nico Eisenhauer Yanbin Hao 2022National Science Review2022,9,12:2
Effect of arotinolol on right ventricular function in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy显示文摘Objective Dilated cardiomyopathy(DCM) is generally considered to be accompanied by both left and right ventricular dysfunction, but most studies only analyze the left ventricular function. In this study,we evaluated the effect of arotinolol on right ventricular function in patients with DCM. Methods Right ventricular ejection fraction(RVEF) and right ventricular diameter(RVD) were measured by two-dimensional echocardiography(2-DE) in 33 DCM patients;RVEF measured by first-pass radionuclide angiography(FPRA) was compared with that by 2-DE. Results The treatment with arotinolol for one year resulted in a reduction in the right ventricular diameter(baseline,23.0 ± 8.3 mm vs after one-year treatment,20.7 ± 5.4 mm;P=0.004 ) and an associated increase in ejection fraction(baseline,36.9 ± 10.3% vs after one-year treatment,45.8 ± 9.6%;P < 0.001 ) ;there is a high correlation between the 2-DE method and radionuclide ventriculographic method. The correlation coefficient is 0.933(P<0.001) . Conclusion Arotinolol therapy could not only improve left ventricular function, but also improve right ventricular function in DCM patients.Hong Yang Li Xu Yongkang Tao Zhimin Xu Xiuqing Du Naqiang Lu Kefei Dou Jinglin Zhao Xianqi Yuan Yanfen Zhao Rongfang Shi Chaomei Fan 2007Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2007,4,3:1
Evenness is important in assessing progress towards sustainable development goals显示文摘Sustainable development goals(SDGs)emphasize a holistic achievement instead of cherry-picking a few. However,no assessment has quantitatively considered the evenness among all 17 goals. Here,we propose a systematic method, which first integrates both the evenness and the overall status of all goals,to distinguish the ideal development pathways from the uneven ones and then revisit the development trajectory in China from 2000 to 2015.Our results suggest that, despite the remarkable progress,a bottleneck has occurred in China since 2013 due to the stagnant developments in some SDGs.However, many far-reaching policies in China have been targeting these deficiencies since then, providing a perspective on how a country approaches sustainable development by promoting evenness among all SDGs.Our results also indicate that regions with the slowest progress are the developed provinces, owing to the persistent uneven status of all goals. Our study demonstrates the importance of adopting evenness in assessing and guiding sustainable development.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Yanfen Wang Xiaoyong Cui Jichang Dong Yanbin Hao Kai Xue Hongbo Duan Anquan Xia Yi Hu Zhi Dong Bingfang Wu Xinquan Zhao Bojie Fu 2021National Science Review2021,8,8:1
Can Digital Intelligence and Cyber-Physical-Social Systems Achieve Global Food Security and Sustainability?显示文摘Plants sequester carbon through photosynthesis and provide primary productivity for the ecosystem. However, they also simultaneously consume water through transpiration, leading to a carbon-water balance relationship. Agricultural production can be regarded as a form of carbon sequestration behavior. From the perspective of the natural-social-economic complex ecosystem, excessive water usage in food production will aggravate regional water pressure for both domestic and industrial purposes. Hence, achieving a harmonious equilibrium between carbon and water resources during the food production process is a key scientific challenge for ensuring food security and sustainability. Digital intelligence(DI) and cyber-physical-social systems(CPSS) are emerging as the new research paradigms that are causing a substantial shift in the conventional thinking and methodologies across various scientific fields, including ecological science and sustainability studies. This paper outlines our recent efforts in using advanced technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence(AI), digital twins, metaverses, and parallel intelligence to model, analyze, and manage the intricate dynamics and equilibrium among plants, carbon, and water in arid and semiarid ecosystems. It introduces the concept of the carbon-water balance and explores its management at three levels: the individual plant level, the community level, and the natural-social-economic complex ecosystem level. Additionally, we elucidate the significance of agricultural foundation models as fundamental technologies within this context. A case analysis of water usage shows that, given the limited availability of water resources in the context of the carbon-water balance, regional collaboration and optimized allocation have the potential to enhance the utilization efficiency of water resources in the river basin. A suggested approach is to consider the river basin as a unified entity and coordinate the relationship between the upstream, midstream and downstream areas. Furthermore, establishing mechanisms for water resource transfer and trade among different industries can be instrumental in maximizing the benefits derived from water resources. Finally, we envisage a future of agriculture characterized by the integration of digital, robotic and biological farming techniques. This vision aims to incorporate small tasks, big models, and deep intelligence into the regular ecological practices of intelligent agriculture.Yanfen Wang Mengzhen Kang Yali Liu Juanjuan Li Kai Xue Xiujuan Wang Jianqing Du Yonglin Tian Qinghua Ni Fei-Yue Wang 2023IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2023,10,11:1

Water resource conservation promotes synergy between economy and environment in China’s northern drylands显示文摘Water resource availability is the major limiting factor for sustainable development in drylands.Climate change intensifies the conflicting water demands between people and the environment and highlights the importance of effective water resource management for achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection. In 2008,Inner Mongolia, typical dryland in northern China, proposed strict regulations on water exploitation and utilization aimed at achieving sustainable development. Our study is the first to investigate the effectiveness and performance of these long-standing water conservation regulations. Our analyses found that the regulations drove industrial transformation, evidenced by the decreasing proportion of environmentally harmful industries such as coal and steel, and the increasing proportion of tertiary industries(especially tourism).Following industrial transformation, economic development decoupled from industrial water consumption and subsequently led to reduced negative environmental impacts.Based on these results, adaptive strategies were developed for 12 cities by revealing and integrating their development pathways and relative status in achieving sustainable development.Integration and cooperation between cities were proposed,e.g.,a water trade agreement between eastern Inner Mongolia(an economically underdeveloped region with relatively abundant water resources)and central Inner Mongolia(an economically developed region with high water stress).Such an agreement may enable the holistic achievement of sustainable development across regions.By integrating the findings of our research, our study presents a reproducible framework for water-management-based sustainable development strategies in drylands.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Boyang Ding Yuexian Liu Wenjun Liu Anquan Xia Ran Huo Qinwei Ran Yanbin Hao Xiaoyong Cui Yanfen Wang 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,3:0
