| 1 | Climate and litter C/N ratio constrain soil organic carbon accumulation显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) plays critical roles in stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the mechanistic controls on the amount and distribution of SOC on global scales are not well understood. In turn, this has hampered the ability to model global C budgets and to find measures to mitigate climate change. Here, based on the data from a large field survey campaign with 2600 plots across China’s forest ecosystems and a global collection of published data from forested land, we find that a low litter carbon-to-nitrogen ratio(C/N) and high wetness index(P/PET, precipitation-to-potentialevapotranspiration ratio) are the two factors that promote SOC accumulation, with only minor contributions of litter quantity and soil texture. The field survey data demonstrated that high plant diversity decreased litter C/N and thus indirectly promoted SOC accumulation by increasing the litter quality. We conclude that any changes in plant-community composition, plant-species richness and environmental factors that can reduce the litter C/N ratio, or climatic changes that increase wetness index, may promote SOC accumulation. | 3 | Optimization of Sample Pretreatment for Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Estuarine Sediments by Gas Chromatography显示文摘This study examined levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in estuarine sediments in Licun (Qingdao, China) by gas chromatography under optimized conditions for sample pretreatment via ultrasonic extraction, column chromatography, and thin layer chromatography. Methanol and dichloromethane (DCM)/methanol (2:1, v/v) were used in ultrasonic extraction, and DCM was used as eluate for column chromatography. The developing system consisted of n-hexane and DCM at a ratio of 9:1 (v/v), with DCM as the extraction solvent for PAHs-containing silica gel scraped off the plate. When the spiking level is 100 ng, total recoveries of spiked matrices for four target PAHs (phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene and chrysene) were 83.7%, 76.4%, 85.8%, and 88.7%, respectively, with relative standard deviation (RSD) between 5.0% and 6.5% (n = 4). When the spiking level is 1000 ng, associated total recoveries were 78.6%, 72.7%, 82.7% and 85.3%, respectively, with RSD between 4.4% and 5.3% (n = 4). | 5 | Optimized One-Step Preparation of a Bioactive Natural Product,Guaiazulene-2,9-dione显示文摘We previously isolated a natural product, namely guaiazulene-2,9-dione showing strong antibacterial activity against Vibrio anguillarum, from a gorgonian Muriceides collaris collected in South China Sea. In this experiment, guaiazulene-2,9-dione was quantitatively synthesized with an optimized one-step bromine oxidation method using guaiazulene as the raw material. The key reaction condition including reaction time and temperature, drop rate of bromine, concentration of aqueous THF solution, respective molar ratio of guaiazulene to bromine and acetic acid, and concentration of guaiazulene in aqueous THF solution, were investigated individually at five levels each for optimization. Combined with the verification test to show the absolute yield of each optimization step, the final optimal condition was determined as: when a solution of 0.025 mmol m L-1 guaiazulene in 80% aqueous THF was treated with four volumes of bromine at a drop rate of 0.1 m L min-1 and four volumes of acetic acid at-5℃ for three hours, the yield of guaiazulene-2,9-dione was 23.72%. | 6 | Plant community and soil properties drive arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal diversity:A case study in tropical forests显示文摘The mutual interdependence of plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)is important in carbon and mineral nutrient exchange.However,an understanding of how AMF community assemblies vary in different forests and the underlying factors regulating AMF diversity in native tropical forests is largely unknown.We explored the AMF community assembly and the underlying factors regulating AMF diversity in a young(YF)and an old-growth forest(OF)in a tropical area.The results showed that a total of 53 AMF phylogroups(virtual taxa,VTs)were detected,38±1 in the OF and 34±1 in the YF through high-throughput sequencing of 18S rDNA,and AMF community composition was significantly different between the two forests.A structural equation model showed that the forest traits indirectly influenced AMF diversity via the plant community,soil properties and microbes,which explained 44.2%of the total observed variation in AMF diversity.Plant diversity and biomass were the strongest predictors of AMF diversity,indicating that AMF diversity was dominantly regulated by biotic factors at our study sites.Our study indicated that forest community traits have a predictable effect on the AMF community;plant community traits and soil properties are particularly important for determining AMF diversity in tropical forests. | Jing Zhang Changxin Quan Lingling Ma Guowei Chu Zhanfeng Liu Xuli Tang | 2021 | Soil Ecology Letters2021,3,1: | 0 |
