| 1 | Application of a ^(137)Cs fingerprinting technique for interpreting responses of sediment deposition of a karst depression to deforestation in the Guizhou Plateau,China显示文摘Deforestation to reclaim land often triggers severe soil erosion in the Guizhou Karst Plateau. 137Cs dating of the deposited sediments in the karst depression bottom was used to estimate soil losses by surface erosion since deforestation started in 1979 on hillslopes in the Shirenzhai catchment, Puding County, Guizhou Province. The catchment has a drainage area of 0.054 km2. The average 137Cs contents of the top and peak layers in five cores of the depression bottom (with an area of 2652 m2), collected in 2009, were 2.35 and 7.25 Bq kg-1, respectively. The medium depths in the depression (which ranged between 84 cm and 113.5 cm with a mean value of 92.1 cm) showed the presence of sediments deposited in 1979. The total volume and weight of the deposited sediments since 1979 were estimated to be 1965 m3 and 2496 t, respectively. The depression bottom can be treated as a temporary impoundment and its sediment trapping efficiency was estimated to be 0.7. The relevant average soil erosion rate on the hillslopes was 2315 t km-2 yr-1 since 1979. The mean 137Cs inventory of the five cores was 7693 Bq m-2, which was ~10 times the local reference inventory of 782 Bq m-2. The total 137Cs activity of the sediments in the bottom was 20.4×106 Bq, and the relevant 137Cs inventory loss from the hillslopes was 358 Bq m-2 (since 1954), which accounted for 45.8% of the reference inventory. Lanzhou is a large industrial city in North-west China. Street dust samples representing different temporal and spatial scales were collected for magnetic properties study. Magnetic measurements indicate a high concentration of magnetic minerals in Lanzhou street dust, dominated by pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite. The concentration of magnetic materials is distinctly high in winter and spring, low in autumn. | 8 | Leaky modes and the first arrivals in cased boreholes with poorly bonded conditions显示文摘The generation mechanism of the first arrivals in the cased boreholes for the poorly bonded conditions is investigated. Based on the analyses of the Riemann surface structure of the characteristic function, the dispersion features, excitation spectra and contributions of modes excited in the cased boreholes with different cementing types are studied. The phase velocity dispersion studies of leaky modes show that high-order modes form 'plateau' regions with one approximate velocity denoted by v separated by their cutoff frequencies, in which the phase velocity changes little with a considerable frequency range, while the group velocity keeps a relatively constant high value. Usually, the operation frequency range of a specific cementing evaluation acoustic logging tool is covered by such a 'plateau' region. Mode excitation and contribution analyses show that the first arrivals in the cased boreholes for the poorly bonded conditions are the contributions from leaky modes, where the traveling velocity of the first arrivals processed by slowness time coherence(STC) method is equal to the approximated velocity v. | 9 | A rotated staggered grid fi-nite-difference with the ab-sorbing boundary condition of a perfectly matched layer显示文摘A rotated staggered grid finite-difference (FD) method with a perfectly matched layer (PML) method is proposed for numerically solving elastic wave equations in inhomogeneous elastic and poroe- lastic media. Compared with a standard staggered- grid FD, the former has the advantage over the latter in that its physical variables need only to be defined at two locations. In the rotated staggered grid, stress and strain components (or particle velocity and dis- placement components) are defined at elementary cell centers, and the velocity or displacement com- ponents (or the stress and strain components) are defined at vertexes. In this way, no elastic moduli need to be interpolated or averaged. Numerical re- sults from the proposed method have been compared with the standard staggered FD method. The results are in good agreement with each other. Our numeri- cal results show that the proposed algorithm can handle much stronger impedance contrast. This is especially true when simulating fractured medium filled with fluids such as water or gas without giving special treatment. On the other hand, the imple- mented PML absorbing boundary condition works well in efficiently reducing reflected waves from the artificial interfaces. It generates almost no reflection at artificial interfaces with a boundary of PML thick- ness of half a wavelength. Our theoretical analysis and numerical tests proved that the PML absorbing algorithm in the rotated staggered grid is almost identical to those in the standard staggered grid. | 10 | Prediction of median survival time in sepsis patients by the SOFA score combined with different predictors显示文摘Background:Sepsis is the leading cause of intensive care unit(ICU)admission.The purpose of this study was to explore the prognostic value of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)score,the Acute Physiological and Chronic Health Evaluation Ⅱ(APACHE Ⅱ)score,and procalcitonin(PCT),albumin(ALB),and lactate(LAC)levels in patients with sepsis.Methods:Consecutive adult patients with suspected or documented sepsis at ICU admission were recruited.Their basic vital signs and related auxiliary examinations to determine their PCT and ALB levels and APACHE Ⅱ score were recorded at ICU admission,and their LAC levels and SOFA scores were recorded for one week after admission.The influence of these variables on hospital mortality was evaluated.Logistic regression was used to derive the Sepsis Hospital Mortality Score(SHMS),a prediction equation describing the relationship between predictors and hospital mortality.The median survival time was calculated by the Kaplan–Meier method.In the validation group,the kappa value was calculated to evaluate the stability of the derived formula.Results:This study included 894 sepsis patients admitted to 18 ICUs in 16 tertiary hospitals.Patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group(626 cases)and validation group(258 cases).In addition,a nonsurvival group(248 patients)of the experimental group was established according to the outcome at the time of discharge.The hospital mortality rate in the experimental group was 39.6%(248/626).Univariate and multivariate regression analyses revealed that the APACHE Ⅱ score(odds ratio[OR]=1.178),△SOFA(OR=1.186),△LAC(OR=1.157),and SOFA mean score(OR=1.086)were independently associated with hospital mortality.The SHMS was calculated as logit(p)=4.715–(0.164×APACHE Ⅱ)–(0.171×△SOFA)–(0.145×△LAC)–(0.082×SOFA mean).A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to further investigate the accuracy of the SHMS,with an area under the curve of 0.851(95%confidence interval[CI]0.821–0.882;p<0.001)for hospital mortality.In the low-risk group and high-risk groups,the corresponding median survival times were 15 days and 11 days,respectively.Conclusion:The APACHE Ⅱ score,△SOFA,△LAC and SOFA mean score were independently associated with hospital mortality in sepsis patients and accurately predicted the hospital mortality rate and median survival time.Data on the median survival time in sepsis patients could be provided to clinicians to assist in the rational use of limited medical resources by facilitating prudent resource allocation.Trial registration:ChiCTR-ECH-13003934,retrospectively registered on August 03,2013. | Wen Li Meiping Wang Bo Zhu Yibing Zhu Xiuming Xi | 2020 | Burns & Trauma2020,8,1: | 7 |

Classical methods such as the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) method can have numerical problems with ill-conditioned sets which are common in practical applications. This paper describes an azimuth-GLS method that provides a solution to the ill-conditioning problem while maintaining reasonable accuracy compared with the classical GLS method. The mean square error is given for both methods as a criterion to determine when to use this azimuth-GLS method. Furthermore, the separation boundary between the azimuth-GLS favorable region and that of the GLS method is explicitly plotted. | 15 | Acoustic wave propagation simulation in a poroelastic medium saturated by two immiscible fluids using a staggered finite-difference with a time partition method显示文摘Based on the three-phase theory proposed by Santos, acoustic wave propagation in a poroelastic medium saturated by two immiscible fluids was simulated using a staggered high-order finite-difference algorithm with a time partition method, which is firstly applied to such a three-phase medium. The partition method was used to solve the stiffness problem of the differential equations in the three-phase theory. Considering the effects of capillary pressure, reference pressure and coupling drag of two fluids in pores, three compressional waves and one shear wave predicted by Santos have been correctly simulated. Influences of the parameters, porosity, permeability and gas saturation on the velocities and amplitude of three compressional waves were discussed in detail. Also, a perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition was firstly implemented in the three-phase equations with a staggered-grid high-order finite-difference. Comparisons between the proposed PML method and a commonly used damping method were made to validate the efficiency of the proposed boundary absorption scheme. It was shown that the PML works more efficiently than the damping method in this complex medium. Additionally, the three-phase theory is reduced to the Biot's theory when there is only one fluid left in the pores, which is shown in Appendix. | 16 | Evaluation of the four potential Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundaries in the Nanxiong Basin based on evidences from volcanic activity and paleoclimatic evolution显示文摘Determining the location of the Cretaceous-Paleogene(K-Pg) boundary in terrestrial strata is highly significant for studying the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems at the end of the Cretaceous(especially the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs). At present, research on terrestrial K-Pg boundaries worldwide is concentrated in the middle and high latitudes, such as North America and Northeast China. Although many studies have also been carried out in the Nanxiong Basin, located at low latitudes(which has become the standard for dividing and comparing the continental K-Pg stratigraphy in China), many researchers have proposed four possible boundaries from different perspectives. Therefore, the exact location remains to be determined. In this study, the total mercury(Hg) content, environmental magnetism, geochemistry, and other parameters for the samples collected near the four boundaries were determined and compared with existing records. Results indicated that: 1) The total Hg content significantly increased in the upper part of the Zhenshui Formation and Pingling part of the Shanghu Formation with sharp fluctuations. As per latest dating results of Deccan Traps, the significantly high Hg value was attributed to the Deccan Traps eruption. Boundary 1 was located in the middle of the Hg anomaly interval, which was consistent with the relationship between the global K-Pg boundary and time of volcanic eruption. 2) The reconstructed paleoclimate evolution curve revealed that the red sediments in the basin recorded the late Maastrichtian warming event(66.2 Ma). | 20 | Effects of organic mineral fertiliser on heavy metal migration and potential carbon sink in soils in a karst region显示文摘Heavy metal pollution in karst mountainous area of Guizhou has spread due to the long-term exploitation of mineral resources and the improper disposal of environmentally hazardous waste. Heavy metals are characterised by non-degradation, strong toxicity, and constant accumulation, posing a grave threat to karst mountain fragile soil ecosystem. To reduce the harm caused by heavy metal pollution and damage to agricultural products, research was undertaken on the basis of previous work by simulating pot experiments on pak choi cabbage(Brassica rapa chinensis)planted in Cd-contaminated soil: different amounts of organic mineral fertilisers(OMF) compared with chemical fertiliser(CF) were used and by detecting the amount of heavy metal in the mature vegetable, a better fertilisation strategy was developed. The results showed that the Cd content in vegetables grown with CF was 23.70 mg/kg,while that of vegetables grown with OMF and bacterial inoculant was the lowest at 15.13 mg/kg. This suggests that the use of OMF and microbes in karst areas not only promotes plant growth but also hinders plant absorption of heavy metal ions in the soil. In addition, through the collection of pot leachate, the detection of water chemistrycharacteristics, and the calculation of the calcite saturation index, it was found that the OMF method also induces certain carbon sink effects.
