Epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics and management of childhood cardiorenal syndrome显示文摘Cardiorenal syndrome(CRS) is a new term recently introduced to describe the acute or chronic comorbid state of the heart and kidney that has been long known and frequently managed in very sick individuals. The tight and delicate coordination of physiological functions among organ systems in the human body makes dysfunction in one to lead to malfunction of one or more other organ systems. CRS is a universal very common morbidity in the critically ill, with a high mortality rate that has received very little research attention in children. Simultaneous management of heart and renal failures in CRS is quite challenging; the therapeutic choice made for one organ must not jeopardize the other. This paper reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics and management of acute and chronic CRS in children.Wasiu A Olowu 2012World Journal of Nephrology2012,1,1:2
Pre-treatment considerations in childhood hypertension due to chronic kidney disease显示文摘Hypertension(HTN) develops very early in childhood chronic kidney disease(CKD). It is linked with rapid progression of kidney disease, increased morbidity and mortality hence the imperative to start antihypertensive medication when blood pressure(BP)is persistently > 90 th percentile for age, gender, and height in non-dialyzing hypertensive children with CKD. HTN pathomechanism in CKD is multifactorial and complexly interwoven. The patient with CKD-associated HTN needs to be carefully evaluated for co-morbidities that frequently alter the course of the disease as successful treatment of HTN in CKD goes beyond life style modification and anti-hypertensive therapy alone. Chronic anaemia, volume overload, endothelial dysfunction, arterial media calcification, and metabolic derangements like secondary hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphataemia, and calcitriol deficiency are a few co-morbidities that may cause or worsen HTN in CKD. It is important to know if the HTN is caused or made worse by the toxic effects of medications like erythropoietin, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Poor treatment response may be due to any of these co-morbidities and medications. A satisfactory hypertensive CKD outcome, therefore, depends very much on identifying and managing these co-morbid conditions and HTN promoting medications promptly and appropriately. This review attempts to point attention to factors that may affect successful treatment of the hypertensive CKD child and how to attain the desired therapeutic BP target.Wasiu Adekunle Olowu 2015World Journal of Nephrology2015,4,5:1

Discontinuities effect on drilling condition and performance of selected rocks in Nigeria显示文摘The study examined joint discontinuity spacing effect on drilling condition and performance in selected rocks in Ilorin and Ibese areas, Nigeria. Five samples for each rock type(gneiss and limestone) were tested in the laboratory for chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Dip direction and joint spacing were measured using compass clinometers. The chemical composition was determined using X-ray Fluorescence(XRF) spectrometer. The results show that gneiss has SiO2 of 61.88% and limestone has CaO content of 52.3%. The average dry density of gneiss and limestone are 2.6 and 2.39 g/cm3, respectively. The uniaxial compressive strength of gneiss and limestone are 195 and 93.83 MPa, respectively. These rocks are classified as strong and moderately strong rock. Gneiss and limestone have mean joint discontinuity spacing of 0.79 and 0.25 m, which classified them as moderate and wide joint spacing respectively. Joint spacing was correlated with specific energy, bit wear and uniaxial compressive using Statistical Package for Social Science(SPSS). The regression model has multiple coefficient of correlation of R2= 0.791 and R2= 0.995 for gneiss and limestone, respectively. The variation in joint spacing could be attributed to specific energy, bit wear and uniaxial compressive strength which affect drilling condition and performance.Ultimately, as joint spacing gets closer, the drilling velocity increases, drill string will be stable.Adebayo Babatunde Bello Wasiu Ademola 2014International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2014,24,5:1

Assessment of Noise Exposure of Sawmill Workers in Southwest,Nigeria显示文摘Economic wood processing employs the use of industrial machines for cutting, shaping, milling, and sawing timber, thereby leading to the generation of high levels of noise.Published data from empirical studies have categorized noise as an environmental hazard of global significance.Furthermore, noise exposure limits for different industries and all the industrial machines available has not been formally established as it presently exists in developed nations around the world. Therefore, this study assessed the daily exposure of sawmills workers to noise in Southwestern Nigeria.Reconnaissance surveys were first carried out in Osun,Oyo,Ondo,Ekiti,Lagos, and Ogun States to select sawmills that were fully operational and fit for the study. Two fully functional sawmills in two cities of each State were eventually selected for data collection, making a total of 24 sawmills, while the Circular Machines(CM),Planer Machines(PM),and Band-saw Machines(BM)were the machines in each sawmill considered. Two machines each of CM,PM,and BM were considered in each sawmill, making a total of forty-eight(48)machines each of CM,PM,and BM.Sound data were collected between 7 am and 7 pm each day for six days(between Monday and Saturday)using Extech 407732 sound level meter and all stabilized measurements were taken three times at different intervals. The data collected were in three different periods:Machine No-work Period(NPm),Machine Idle Period(IPm),and Machine Working Period(WPm).A two–way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA)was carried out at P<0.05 to determine whether there is a significant difference in the sound level average before and after the break, for both the idle and working periods of the three machines considered. This was also done to determine whether there is a signifi-cant difference between the sound level average of the results collected during idle and working periods of the three machines.Noise Pollution Levels(Lnp)ranged from 83.20 dB(PM)to 107.65(BM)and 93.42(CM and PM)–116.00(BM)respectively,while IPm also gave the least noise pollution level of 95.79 dB and WPm gave the highest level of 102.88 dB.The results revealed that all the machines’Lnp values in the working period are more than the 90 dB acceptable limit the recommendation value of 90 dB while 89.6%of CMs,75%of PMs,and 89.6%of BM had their Lnp above 90 dB in the idle period respectively. The minimum and the maximum noise dose levels for IPm,WPm and overall are 0.09(BM)and 2.37(CM),0.50(CM),and 4.77(PM)and 0.69(BM)and 6.64(PM)respectively.The study found out that the fundamental contributing factors to the high noise levels in sawmills are poor machine maintenance, use of old and obsolete machines, poor housekeeping strategy, limited space, workers’negligence, lack of PPE,and lack of occupational safety training. The study recommends that proper workplace practices such as use of personal protective equipment, new and modern machines, training, and occupational safety programmes be implemented in the considered sawmills.Abiola O.Ajayeoba Adewoye A.Olanipekun Wasiu A.Raheem Oluwaseun O.Ojo Ayowumi R.Soji-Adekunle 2021Sound & Vibration2021,55,1:1

Aeromagnetic Interpretation of Basement Structures and Geometry in Parts of the Middle Benue Trough,North Central,Nigeria显示文摘The research of an analysis of aeromagnetic data collected in the middle Benue Trough in north-central Nigeria is presented.A detailed analysis of basement structures is conducted in order to identify regions with high hydrocarbon potential that is different from those discovered by earlier researchers.Aeromagnetic data were filtered by using the Butterworth and Gaussian filters, transformed by engaging the reduction to the equator technique, and subsequently enhanced. To estimate magnetic basement depths at various places throughout the basin, the Euler deconvolution depth weighting approach was used.Eleven(11)sub-basins with depths ranging from-2000 m to-8000 m were also identified by Euler’s findings. The sub-basins trend in the NE-SW direction while the average sediment thickness is found to be more than 3 km.The extracted structural features indicate areas like Kadi Blam and Kado areas in the southeastern part and Ogoja and Obudu in the southern part of the study area as regions with high structural densities. These areas coincide with the areas delineated as the sub-basins.The cross-sections generated reveal depressions caused by the action of some tectonic activities in the area. This study identified undulating basement topography believed to be due to tectonic activities as well as five areas that are possible targets for hydrocarbon exploration.Esho Oluwaseyi Olatubosun Osisanya Olajuwon Wasiu Ibitoye Taiwo Abel Ajibade Femi Zephaniah Tokunbo Sanmi Fagbemigun 2022Advances in Geological and Geotechnical Engineering Research2022,4,4:0
