Geochemistry of rare earth elements in the mid-late Quaternary sediments of the western Philippine Sea and their paleoenvironmental significance显示文摘Based on a δ18O chronology, rare earth elements(REE) and other typical elements in sediments from core MD06-3047 in the western Philippine Sea were analyzed to constrain the provenances of the sediments and investigate quantitative changes in the Asian eolian input to the study area over the last 700 ka.Among the competing processes that might affect REE compositions, sediment provenance is the most important one.Provenance analysis suggests that the study sediments have two provenance end-members;local volcanic sources are dominant, and eolian dust from the Asian continent has a smaller contribution.During glacial periods, eolian input to the western Philippine Sea was enhanced. In contrast, material supply from local volcanics increased during interglacial periods.Changes in eolian input to the study area were probably related to the strength of the East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM) as well as aridity in the Asian continent on an orbital time scale, and were partly influenced by local control factors on shorter time scales. Therefore,we propose that the present study expands the application of the REE-based method for quantitatively estimating the eolian component from the mid-latitude northern Pacific to the low-latitude western Pacific.Additionally, the study preliminarily confirms the influence of EAWM-transported eolian material on sedimentation in the western Philippine Sea since 700 ka. | XU ZhaoKai LI TieGang WAN ShiMing YIN XueBo JIANG FuQing SUN HanJie JinYong CHOI DhongIl LIM | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,4: | 10
Focusing on the recent progress of tea polyphenol chemistry and perspectives显示文摘Myriad evidence attests to the health-promoting benefits of tea drinking. While there are multiple factors of tea influencing the effective biological properties, tea polyphenols are the most significant and valuable components. The chemical characterization and physical characteristics of tea polyphenols have been comprehensively studied over the previous years.Still the emergence of new chemistry in tea, particularly the property of scavenging reactive carbonyl species(RCS)and the newly discovered flavoalkaloid compounds, has drawn increasing attention. In this review,we summarize recent findings of a new class of compounds in tea-flavonoid alkaloids(flavoalkaloids),which exist in fresh tea leaves and can be generated during the process of post-harvesting,and also postulate the formation mechanism of flavoalkaloids between catechins and theanine-derived Strecker aldehyde.Additionally,we detail the up-to-date research results of tea polyphenols regarding their ability to trap RCS and their in vivo aminated metabolites to suppress advanced glycation ends products(AGEs).We further raise questions to be addressed in the near future, including the synthetic pathways for the generation of flavoalkaloids and AGEs in fresh tea leaves before processing and the concentrations of tea polyphenols that affect their RCS scavenging capability due to their pro-oxidant nature.More intensive research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms of action underlying the biological activity of flavoalkaloids and the pharmacological application of tea polyphenols in scavenging RCS and impeding detrimental AGEs. | Shiming Li Liang Zhang Xiaochun Wan Jianfeng Zhan Chi-Tang Ho | 2022 | Food Science and Human Wellness2022,11,3: | 10
Loss of scleraxis leads to distinct reduction of mineralized intermuscular bone in zebrafish显示文摘Intermuscular bones(IBs)are ossified from tendons and only occur in lower teleosts.Positive association between the regulation of scleraxis gene(scx)and tendon development gave us reasons to speculate that the scx gene may play a potential role in regulating the development of IBs.A phylogenetic analysis conducted for this study revealed potential functional differentiation between two scx orthologues, scxa and scxb. The scxa^(-/-) and scxb^(-/-) zebrafish were generated through CRISPR-Cas9 technology to study the role of scx in the IB and rib development. The results showed a significant reduction of the number of IBs in adult scxa-1^(-/-) zebrafish, with almost 70%reduction(15-25 IBs)compared to the wild type scxa-1^(+/+)zebrafish(76-80 IBs).In the scxa-1^(+/+)adults,IBs were observed in both dorsal and tail segments;however,in scxa-1^(-/-)fish IBs were observed only in the tail segment(none in the dorsal segment).Although scxa-1^(-/-) zebrafish had rib defects, the mutants were viable and fertile as adult fish. The scxb^(-/-) zebrafish had the same number of IBs and same skeletal phenotype as the wild-type fish. This suggests that only scxa has a crucial role in the IB development, and confirms functional differentiation of scx orthologues. To further clarify the molecular mechanism by which scxa affects the IB development,we conducted comparative transcriptome analysis of dorsal tissue samples of scxa-1^(+/+)(with IBs)and scxa-1^(-/-) (without IBs),and further verified the expression of key genes via qPCR.This is the first study to identify a gene that controls the amount of IBs in fish, and it provides a new sight into the effects of scxa on the molecular mechanism of IB development in fish. | Chunhong Nie Shiming Wan Yulong Chen Dejie Zhu Xudong Wang Xiaoru Dong Ze-Xia Gao | 2021 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,2: | 3
Enhanced weathering input from South Asia to the Indian Ocean since the late Eocene显示文摘nhanced silicate weathering induced by the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau(HTP)has been considered as the major cause of pCO_(2) decline and Cenozoic cooling. However, this hypothesis remains to be validated, largely due to the lack of a reliable reconstruction of the HTP weathering flux. Here,we present a 37-million-year record of the difference in the seawater radiogenic neodymium isotopic composition(△ε_(Nd))of Ocean Drilling Program(ODP)sites and Fe-Mn crusts between the northern and central Indian Ocean, which indicates the contribution of regional weathering input from the South Asian continent to the Indian Ocean. The results show a long-term increase in △ε_(Nd) and thus provide the first critical evidence of enhanced South Asian weathering input since the late Eocene. The evolution coincided well with major pulses of surface uplift in the HTP and global climatic transitions. Our foraminiferal eNd record suggests that tectonic uplift and silicate weathering in South Asia, especially in the Himalayas, might have played a significant role in the late Cenozoic cooling. | Zehua Song Shiming Wan Christophe Colin Christian France-Lanord Zhaojie Yu Arnaud Dapoigny Hualong Jin Mengjun Li Jin Zhang Debo Zhao Xuefa Shi Anchun Li | 2023 | Science Bulletin2023,,3: | 2
Evaluation of SARS-CoV-2-Neutralizing Nanobody Using Virus Receptor Binding Domain-Administered Model Mice显示文摘Due to the rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),there is an urgent requirement for the development of additional diagnostic tools for further analysis of the disease. The isolated nanobody Nb11-59 binds to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)reeptor-binding domain[RBD]with high afinity to neutralize the virus and block the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2-(ACE2-)RBD interaction. Here,we introduce a novel nanobody-based radiotracer named^(68)Ga-Nb1159.The radiotracer retained high affinity for the RBD and showed reliable radiochemical characteristics both in vitro and in vivo.Predinical positron emission tomography(PET)studies of Ga-Nb1159 in mice revealed is rapid dearance from circulation and robust uptake into the renal and urinary systems.Fortunately,^(68)Ga-Nb1159 could speifcally reveal the distribution of the RBD in mice. This sudy also helped to evaluate the pharmacodynamic efects of the neutralizing nanobody.Moreover,^(68)Ga-Nb1159 may be a promising l0ol lo explore the distribution of the RBD and improve the understanding of the virus. In particular, this study identified a novel molecular radioagent and established a reliable evaluation method for speifially investigating the RBD through noninvasive and visual PET technology. | Song Liu Guanghui Li Lei Ding Jin Ding Qian Zhang Dan Li Xingguo Hou Xiangxing Kong Jing Zou Shiming Zhang Hongbin Han Yakun Wan Zhi Yang Hua Zhu | 2022 | Research2022,,2: | 2

Evolution of Asian drying since 30 Ma revealed by clay minerals record in the West Pacific and its tectonic-climatic forcing显示文摘As the second largest dust source on the globe, the tectonic and climatic evolution of continental Asia has an important impact on regional and global climate change. The West Pacific is the main sediment sink for eolian dust transported eastward from the Asian interior.Clay minerals,as the major fine-grained weathering products of continental rocks, can be readily transported by wind or currents over long distances and thus have been widely used in the reconstruction of paleoclimate and weathering history. However, the overall evolutionary tendency and response mechanism of clay mineral records over large spatial and long timescales across Asia remain unclear. Here, two continuous and high-resolution clay mineral records since 30 Ma were reconstructed from sediments at Deep Sea Drilling Program(DSDP)Sites 292 and 296 in the Philippine Sea.Clay minerals and Sr-Nd isotope compositions were used to constrain provenance and reconstruct the drying history of the dust source region since the Oligocene. The results show that the clay-sized detrital sediments in the Philippine Sea are a mixture of Asian eolian dust and volcanic materials from the West Pacific arcs.Based on the clay mineral compositions and eolian flux,we reveal that the Asian interior has been continuously drying since the late Oligocene and that stepwise enhanced aridification occurred at approximately 20,14,7,and 3 Ma.Compared with other regions of the world, the relative contents of illite and chlorite increased more dramatically in Asia during the late Cenozoic, and the inconsistency became more obvious at approximately 20 Ma.Since 3 Ma,illite and chlorite have increased consistently across the globe.Combined with the Asian tectonic and climatic history,we suggest that the increase in illite and chlorite from Asia between 20 and 3 Ma was mainly in response to the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, whereas after 3 Ma,it was primarily controlled by global cooling driven by the expansion of the Arctic ice sheet. | Yi TANG Shiming WAN Debo ZHAO Zhaojie YU Zhaokai XU Jin ZHANG Zehua SONG Mengjun LI Hualong JIN Wenjun JIAO Hongkun DONG Anchun LI | 2023 | Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,6: | 0
Enhancing hydrogen storage properties of MgH_(2) using FeCoNiCrMn high entropy alloy catalysts显示文摘Herein,we report the successful preparation of the FeCoNiCrMn high entropy alloy(HEA)loaded MgH_(2) and HEA’s effect on the hydrogen storage properties of Mg/MgH_(2).The HEA shows high catalytic activity toward hydrogen dissociation and recombination reaction, and successfully suppressed activation energy of dehydrogenation reaction from 151.9 to 90.2 kJ mol-1.Moreover,part of Co and Ni can react with Mg,and produce Mg_(2) Co/Mg_(2) CoH 5 and Mg_(2) Ni/Mg_(2) NiH_(4) during the hydrogen storage processes, further en-hancing dehydrogenation reaction through the“hydrogen pumping”mechanism.Asa result, the MgH_(2)-5 wt%HEA composite can release 5.6 wt%of H_(2) at 280℃ within 10 min,and absorb 5.5 wt%H_(2) within 0.5 min at 150℃.The loaded HEA shows robustness against particle aggregation, leading to stable re-versible hydrogen storage processes at least 50 times. These findings show the synergistic effects of HEA on Mg-based hydrogen storage materials, providing an additional degree of freedom for catalyst design. | Haiyi Wan Xiu Yang Shiming Zhou Lei Ran Yangfan Lu Yu’an Chen Jingfeng Wang Fusheng Pan | 2023 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,18: | 0
The genetic basis of the leafy seadragon's unique camouflage morphology and avenues for its efficient conservation derived from habitat modeling显示文摘The leafy seadragon certainly is among evolution’s most“beautiful and wonderful”species aptly named for its extraordinary camouflage mimicking its coastal seaweed habitat. However, limited information is known about the genetic basis of its phenotypes and conspicuous camouflage. Here,we revealed genomic signatures of rapid evolution and positive selection in core genes related to its camouflage, which allowed us to predict population dynamics for this species.Comparative genomic analysis revealed that seadragons have the smallest olfactory repertoires among all ray-finned fishes, suggesting adaptations to the highly specialized habitat.Other positively selected and rapidly evolving genes that serve in bone development and coloration are highly expressed in the leaf-like appendages, supporting a recent adaptive shift in camouflage appendage formation.Knock-out of bmp6 results in dysplastic intermuscular bones with a significantly reduced number in zebrafish, implying its important function in bone formation.Global climate change-induced loss of seagrass beds now severely threatens the continued existence of this enigmatic species. The leafy seadragon has a historically small population size likely due to its specific habitat requirements that further exacerbate its vulnerability to climate change. Therefore, taking climate change-induced range shifts into account while developing future protection strategies. | Meng Qu Yingyi Zhang Zexia Gao Zhixin Zhang Yali Liu Shiming Wan Xin Wang Haiyan Yu Huixian Zhang Yuhong Liu Ralf Schneider Axel Meyer Qiang Lin | 2023 | Science China(Life Sciences)2023,66,6: | 0
TMEM106A transcriptionally regulated by promoter methylation is involved in invasion and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Expression of transmembrane protein 106A(TMEM106A)has been reported to be dysregulated in several types of cancers. However, the role of TMEM106A in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is still unknown. In the present study,we demonstrate that TMEM106A is markedly downregulated in HCC compared with normal liver tissue. In particular,tumor-specific DNA methylation of TMEM106A is frequently observed in tumor tissues from HCC patients.Immunohistochemistry and pyrosequencing reveal a significant relationship between TMEM106A methylation and downregulation of protein expression.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis reveals that methylation of TMEM106A in tumor samples is different from that in non-malignant adjacent tissues of HCC patients. Moreover,HCC patients with TMEM106A hypermethylation have a poor clinical prognosis.5-Aza-2′-deoxycytidin treatment of hypermethylated TMEM106A in highly metastatic HCC cells increases the expression of TMEM106A.Functional assays reveal that overexpression of TMEM106A significantly suppresses the malignant behavior of HCC cells in vitro and decreases tumorigenicity and lung metastasis in vivo.Mechanistically,TMEM106A inhibits epithelial mesenchymal transition(EMT)of HCC cells through inactivation of the Erk1/2/Slug signaling pathway. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that TMEM106A is an inhibitor of HCC EMT and metastasis, and TMEM106A is often transcriptionally downregulated by promoter methylation, which results in reduced levels of TMEM106A protein and predicts poor survival outcomes for HCC patients. | Shiming Shi Biao Wang Jinglei Wan Lina Song Guiqi Zhu Junxian Du Luxi Ye Qianqian Zhao Jialiang Cai Qing Chen Kun Xiao Jian He Lei Yu Zhi Dai | 2022 | Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2022,54,7: | 0
East Asian monsoon intensification promoted weathering of the magnesium-rich southern China upper crust and its global significance显示文摘The Oligocene-Miocene boundary Asian climatic reorganization linked to the northward migration of the East Asian monsoon into subtropical China is a potentially important but poorly constrained atmospheric CO_(2) consumption process. Here,we performed a first-order estimate of the CO_(2) consumption induced by silicate chemical weathering and organic carbon burial in subtropical China related to this climatic reorganization. Our results show that an increase in long-term CO_(2 )consumption by silicate weathering varies from 0.06×10^(12)to 0.87×10^(12)mol yr^(-1)depending on erosion flux reconstructions, with an~50%contribution of Mg-silicate weathering since the late Oligocene. The organic carbon burial flux is approximately 25%of the contemporary CO_(2) consumption by silicate weathering. The results highlight the significant role of weathering of the Mg-rich upper continental crust in East China, which would contribute to the rapid decline in atmospheric CO_(2) during the late Oligocene and the Neogene rise in the seawater Mg content. If this climatic reorganization was mainly induced by the Tibetan Plateau uplift, our study suggests that the growth of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau can lead to indirect modification of the global carbon and magnesium cycles by changing the regional hydrological cycle in areas of East Asia that are tectonically less active. | Yibo YANG Albert GALY Xiaomin FANG Christian FRANCE-LANORD Shiming WAN Rongsheng YANG Jian ZHANG Ran ZHANG Song YANG Yunfa MIAO Yudong LIU Chengcheng YE | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,7: | 0
