| 1 | The importance of non-carbonate mineral weathering as a soil formation mechanism within a karst weathering profile in the SPECTRA Critical Zone Observatory, Guizhou Province,China显示文摘Soil degradation, including rocky desertification,of the karst regions in China is severe. Karst landscapes are especially sensitive to soil degradation as carbonate rocks are nutrient-poor and easily eroded. Understanding the balance between soil formation and soil erosion is critical for long-term soil sustainability, yet little is known about the initial soil forming processes on karst terrain. Herein we examine the initial weathering processes of several types of carbonate bedrock containing varying amounts of non-carbonate minerals in the SPECTRA Critical Zone Observatory, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. We compared the weathering mechanisms of the bedrock to the mass transfer of mineral nutrients in a soil profile developed on these rocks and found that soil formation and nutrient contents are strongly dependent upon the weathering of interbedded layers of more silicate-rich bedrock(marls). | 4 | Ancient fish weir technology for modern stewardship: lessons from community-based salmon monitoring显示文摘Introduction:The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples states that indigenous people have a fundamental right to contribute to the management of the resources that support their livelihoods.Salmon are vital to the economy and culture of First Nations in coastal British Columbia,Canada.In this region,traditional systems of management including weirs-fences built across rivers to selectively harvest salmon-supported sustainable fisheries for millennia.In the late-19th century traditional fishing practices were banned as colonial goverments consolidated control over salmon.Outcomes:In collaboration with the Hei ltsuk First Nation we revived the practice of weir building in the Koeye River.Over the first four years of the project we tagged 1,226 sockeye,and counted 8,036 fish during fall stream walks.We used a mark-recapture model which accounted for both pre-spawn mortality due to variation in temperature,and tag loss,to produce the first mark-resight estimates of sockeye abundance in the watershed(4,600-15,000 escapement).Discussion:High river temperatures are associated with increased en route morality in migrating adult sockeye.We estimated pre-spawn mortality ranged from 8-72%across the four years of study,highlighting the degree to which climate conditions may dictate future viability in sockeye salmon populations.These results demonstrate the power of fusing traditional knowledge and management systems with contemporary scientific approaches in developing local monitoring. | William I.Atlas William G.Houstya Audrey Beliveau Bryant DeRoy Grant Callegarie Mike Reid Jonathan W.Moore | 2017 | Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2017,3,6: | 0 |

| 8 | Nanoindentation in elastoplastic materials:insights from numerical simulations显示文摘Finite element simulations of nanoindentation were performed on an elastoplastic material using Berkovich and conical indenters to investigate the effects of geometry on the load-displacement response of the material.The Berkovich indenter,widely used in nanoindentation experiments,is typically simplified to a theoretically equivalent 70.3°conical indenter for numerical simulations,which allows for a less computationally intensive two-dimensional(2D)axisymmetric analysis.Previous studies into the validity of this equivalence assumption for indentations in elastoplastic materials have varying conclusions.Using 2D and 3D finite element simulations,the present study investigates the response of elastoplastic materials,obeying a combined isotropic and kinematic hardening,to indentation with conical and Berkovich indenters.Simulations show that there is a clear difference in the load-displacement response of the selected material to the two indenters.The Berkovich geometry is found to produce a more localized pattern of contact stresses and plastic strains,leading to a smaller mobilized force for the same magnitude of displacement.To further validate the numerical simulations,experimental results of nanoindentation into an aluminium specimen were compared to elastoplastic finite element simulation results.Comparisons suggest that machining-induced residual stresses have likely affected the experimental results. | Steven W.Moore Majid T.Manzari Yin-Lin Shen | 2010 | International Journal of Smart and Nano Materials2010,1,2: | 0 |
| 9 | FunnelCloud:a cloud-based system for exploring tornado events显示文摘Recent research has shown an increase in the number of extreme tornado outbreaks per year.The characterization of the spatio-temporal pattern of tornado events is therefore a critical task in the analysis of meteorological data.Currently,there are a large number of available meteorological datasets that can be used for such analysis.However,much of these data are distributed across multiple websites and are not accessible in a central location.This poses a significant challenge for a scientist who is interested in exploring meteorological patterns associated with tornado events.This paper presents a novel system which uses cloud-based technology for integrating,storing,exploring,analyzing,and visualizing meteorological data associated with tornado outbreaks.The system employs a novel NoSQL database schema and web services architecture for data integration and provides a user friendly interface that allows scientists to explore the spatio-temporal pattern of tornado events.Furthermore,scientists can use this interface to analyze the relationship between different meteorological variables and properties of tornado outbreaks using a number of spatio-temporal statistical and data mining methods.The efficacy of the system is demonstrated on a use case centered on the analysis of climatic indicators of large spatio-temporally clustered tornado outbreaks. | Jie Lian Michael P.McGuire Todd W.Moore | 2017 | International Journal of Digital Earth2017,10,10: | 0 |
