| 2 | Are hyoliths Palaeozoic lophophorates?显示文摘The phylogenetic position of hyoliths has long been unsettled,with recent discoveries of a tentaculate feeding apparatus('lophophore')and fleshy apical extensions from the shell('pedicle')suggesting a lophophorate affinity.Here,we describe the first soft parts associated with the feeding apparatus of an orthothecid hyolith,Triplicatella opimus from the Chengjiang biota of South China.The tuft-like arrangement of the tentacles of T.opimus differs from that of hyolithids:suggesting they collected food directly from the substrate.A reassessment of the feeding organ in hyolithids indicates that it does not represent a lophophore and our analysis of the apical structures associated with some orthothecids show that these represent crushed portions of the shell and are not comparable to the brachiopod pedicle.The new information suggests that hyoliths are more likely to be basal members of the lophotrochozoans rather than lophophorates closely linked with the Phylum Brachiopoda. | Fan Liu Christian B Skovsted Timothy P Topper Zhifei Zhang Degan Shu | 2020 | National Science Review2020，7，2： | 5 |
| 3 | Distribution of pericellular matrix molecules in the temporomandibular joint and their chondroprotective effects against inflammation显示文摘The objectives of this study were to(1) determine the distribution and synthesis of pericellular matrix(PCM) molecules(collagen VI, collagen IV and laminin) in rat temporomandibular joint(TMJ) and(2) investigate the effects of PCM molecules on chondrocytes against inflammation in osteoarthritis. Four zones(fibrous, proliferating, mature and hypertrophic) of condylar cartilage and three bands(anterior, intermediate and posterior) of disc were analysed by immunohistochemistry for the presence of PCM molecules in rat TMJs. Isolated chondrocytes were pre-treated with PCM molecules before being subjected to interleukin(IL)-1β treatment to stimulate inflammation. The responses of the chondrocytes were analysed using gene expression, nitric oxide release and matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-13 production measures. Histomorphometric analyses revealed that the highest areal deposition of collagen VI(67.4%), collagen IV(45.7%) and laminin(52.4%) was in the proliferating zone of TMJ condylar cartilage. No significant difference in the distribution of PCM molecules was noted among the three bands of the TMJ disc. All three PCM molecules were expressed intracellularly by chondrocytes cultured in the monolayer. Among the PCM molecules, pre-treatment with collagen VI enhanced cellular proliferation, ameliorated IL-1β-induced MMP-3, MMP-9, MMP-13 and inducible nitric oxide synthase gene expression, and attenuated the downregulation of cartilage matrix genes, including collagen I, aggrecan and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein(COMP). Concurrently, collagen VI pretreatment inhibited nitric oxide and MMP-13 production. | 6 | Total pancreatectomy: Short- and long-term outcomes at a high-volume pancreas center显示文摘AIM To identify the current indications and outcomes of total pancreatectomy at a high-volume center. METHODS A single institutional retrospective study of patients undergoing total pancreatectomy from 1995 to 2014 was performed.RESULTS One hundred and three patients underwent totalpancreatectomy for indications including: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(n = 42, 40.8%), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(n = 40, 38.8%), chronic pancreatitis(n = 8, 7.8%), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(n = 7, 6.8%), and miscellaneous(n = 6, 5.8%). The mean age was 66.2 years, and 59(57.3%) were female. Twenty-four patients(23.3%) underwent a laparoscopic total pancreatectomy. Splenic preservation and portal vein resection and reconstruction were performed in 24(23.3%) and 18 patients(17.5%), respectively. The 90 d major complications, readmission, and mortality rates were 32%, 17.5%, and 6.8% respectively.
