Effects of heavy metal pollution of highway origin on soil nematode guilds in North Shenyang, China显示文摘Soil samples were collected with distance at 5,20,40,80,160,and 320 m from the Shen-Ha(Shenyang-Harbin) Highway,Northeast China,to investigate the effect of heavy metals of highway origin on soil nematode guilds. The contents of soil Pb,Cu,Zn,and the nematode community structure were analyzed. The results showed that the contents of total and available Pb,Cu,Zn varied significantly with the different distances from the highway.Pb was the main pollutant in the soils in the vicinity of Shen-Ha Highway. The zone from 20 to 40 m away from the highway was the most polluted area. The highest abundance of soil nematodes was found at 5 m while the lowest at 20 m away from the highway.Thirty six genera of nematodes belonging to 23 families were identified.Nematode guilds having different responses to soil heavy metals were classified into four types.Soil nematode guilds may act as a prominent indicator to heavy metal pollution of highway origin. | HAN Dechang ZHANG Xiaoke TOMAR Vijay Vikram Singh LI Qi WEN Dazhong LIANG Wenju | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,2: | 10
Species diversity, regeneration and dominance as influenced by canopy gaps and their characteristics in tropical evergreen forests of Western Ghats, India显示文摘Canopy gaps play a significant role in maintaining structure and composition of tropical forests. This study was carried out in tropical evergreen forests of central Western Ghats in India to understand the influence of canopy gap size and the relationship of gap regime attributes to diversity measures and regeneration. The average gap size in the study area was found to be 396 m2 and around half of gaps were 4–8 years old. Gaps created by natural single tree fall were smaller in size but significantly higher in number. Diversity and regeneration of woody species were compared with canopy gaps and intact vegetation. Species richness and diversity was higher in gaps than in intact vegetation. Macaranga peltata, a shade intolerant species dominated gaps while intact vegetation was dominated by shade tolerant Kingiodendron pinnatum.Gap size significantly influenced species diversity and regeneration. Gap area and age were significantly and negatively correlated with diversity measures but positively correlated with regeneration. Among all the attributes of gaps, regeneration was significantly positively correlated with light intensity. Gaps maintained species diversity and favored regeneration of woody species. In addition to gap size and age, other gap ecological attributes also affected species diversity and regeneration. | Guddappa Mahalingappa Devagiri Anil Kumar Khaple Siddagangaiah Mohan Puttanaik Venkateshamurthy Sanjay Tomar Arkalgud Nagaraja Arunkumar Geeta Joshi | 2016 | Journal of Forestry Research2016,27,4: | 9
Dengue:epidemiology, prevention and pressing need for vaccine development显示文摘Dengue fever is a mosquito born viral infection, and the complicated form of dengue is dengue hemorrhagic fever(DHF).In the recent decades incidence and distribution of dengue has increased dramatically.Dengue viruses belong to family flaviviridae with four serotypes and are transmitted mainly by mosquito Aedes aegypti.Today almost two-fifth of world’s population (2.5 million) is at risk of dengue and no specific antiviral drug or vaccine is available against it.Uncontrolled population growth in Africa and South East Asia has increased number of susceptible hosts in urban and semi urban areas.About 40%of world population resides in the high risk area for dengue transmission.According to latest estimates by WHO,yearly 50 to 100 million infections occur globally, this includes around 500 000 DHF and 22 000 deaths, mostly among children.Only symptomatic treatment in the form of analgesic, antipyretics and body fluid management is provided to the patient.Prevention strategies mainly focus on two approaches, firsdy on activities to control vector and secondly on activities to protect human from mosquito bite but there is always concerns regarding their sustainably and effectiveness.Theoretically development of an effective dengue vaccine is feasible and production of an effective and affordable vaccine could be a viable option to save humans from this dreadful disease. Conceptually vaccine production is possible, but it has to be tetravalent, providing immunity against all serotypes.Few candidate vaccines are in advance stage of their development:however international cooperation is needed to make these vaccines available on cheaper rates to the poor and vulnerable countries. Objective of this review is to discuss various aspects related to dengue, its epidemiology, available preventive methods, need for vaccine and challenges in its development. | Kuldeep Kumar Pankaj Kumar Singh Juhi Tomar Swati Baijal | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,12: | 2
Does black hole spin play a key role in the FSRQ/BL Lac dichotomy?显示文摘Blazars are characterized by large intensity and spectral variations across the electromagnetic spectrum It is believed that jets emerging from them are almost aligned with the line-of-sight. The majority of identified extragalactic sources in γ-ray catalogs of EGRET and Fermi are blazars. Observationally, blazars can be divided into two classes: flat spectrum radio quasars(FSRQs) and BL Lacs. BL Lacs usually exhibit lower γ-ray luminosity and harder power law spectra at γ-ray energies than FSRQs. We attempt to explain the high energy properties of FSRQs and BL Lacs from Fermi γ-ray space telescope observations. It was argued previously that the difference in accretion rates is mainly responsible for the large mismatch in observed luminosity in γ-ray. However, when intrinsic luminosities are derived by correcting for beaming effects, this difference in γ-ray luminosity between the two classes is significantly reduced. In order to explain this difference in intrinsic luminosities, we propose that spin plays an important role in the luminosity distribution dichotomy of BL Lacs and FSRQs. As the outflow power of a blazar increases with increasing spin of a central black hole, we suggest that the spin plays a crucial role in making BL Lac sources low luminous and slow rotators compared to FSRQ sources. | Debbijoy Bhattacharya Parameswaran Sreekumar Banibrata Mukhopadhyay Ishan Tomar | 2016 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2016,16,4: | 2
Moisture regime influence on soil carbon stock and carbon sequestration rates in semi-arid forests of the National Capital Region, India显示文摘Understanding the dynamics of soil carbon is crucial for assessing the soil carbon storage and predicting the potential of mitigating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the biomass and soil. The present study evaluated variations of soil carbon stock in semi-arid forests in India under diff erent moisture regimes.Soil organic carbon(SOC)and soil inorganic carbon(SIC)stocks were determined in diff erent moisture regimes i.e.monsoon,post-monsoon,winter and pre-monsoon seasons at 0–10 and>10–20 cm depths.SOC stock showed signifi cant variations under different moisture regimes. The highest SOC stock was during winter(22.81 Mg C ha−1)and lowest during the monsoon season(2.34 Mg C ha−1)among all the ridge forests under study.SOC and SIC stock under diff erent moisture regimes showed signifi cant negative correlation with soil moisture(p<0.05),as a sudden increase in soil moisture after rainfall results in an increase in carbon loss due to microbial decomposition of accumulated carbon during the dry period. There was an increase in annual SOC stock and a decrease(or no change in some cases),in SIC stock at both the depths during the study period. The SOC and SIC sequestration rates were estimated as any increase/decrease in the respective stock during each successive year.SOC sequestered ranged between 0.046 and 0.741 Mg C ha−1 y−1.Similarly,SIC sequestration ranged between 0.013 and 0.023 Mg C ha−1 y−1 over all ridge forests up to 20 cm depth. The Delhi ridge forests, which accounts to 0.007%of the semi-arid regions of India, contribute 0.25–0.32%of the national potential(semi-arid region)for SOC sequestration up to 20 cm depth. The estimates of the rate of C sequestration in this study provide a realistic image of carbon dynamics under present climatic conditions of semi-arid forests, and could be used in developing a database and formulating new strategies for carbon dioxide mitigation by enhancing soil C sequestration rates. | Urvashi Tomar Ratul Baishya | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,6: | 2
