| 1 | Intestinal microbiota in health and disease: Role of bifidobacteria in gut homeostasis显示文摘The pool of microbes inhabiting our body is known as 'microbiota' and their collective genomes as 'microbiome'. The colon is the most densely populated organ in the human body, although other parts, such as the skin, vaginal mucosa, or respiratory tract, also harbour specific microbiota. This microbial community regulates some important metabolic and physiological functions of the host, and drives the maturation of the immune system in early life, contributing to its homeostasis during life. Alterations of the intestinal microbiota can occur by changes in composition(dysbiosis), function, or microbiota-host interactions and they can be directly correlated with several diseases. The only disease in which a clear causal role of a dysbiotic microbiota has been demonstrated is the case of Clostridium difficile infections. Nonetheless, alterations in composition and function of the microbiota have been associated with several gastrointestinal diseases(inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, or irritable bowel syndrome), as well as extra-intestinal pathologies, such as those affecting the liver, or the respiratory tract(e.g., allergy, bronchial asthma, and cystic fibrosis), among others. Species of Bifidobacterium genus are the normal inhabitants of a healthy human gut and alterations in number and composition of their populations is one of the most frequent features present in these diseases. The use of probiotics, including bifidobacteria strains, in preventive medicine to maintain a healthy intestinal function is well documented. Probiotics are also proposed as therapeutic agents for gastrointestinal disorders and other pathologies. The World Gastroenterology Organization recently published potential clinical applications for several probiotic formulations, in which species of lactobacilli are predominant. This review is focused on probiotic preparations containing Bifidobacterium strains, alone or in combination with other bacteria, which have been tested in human clinical studies. In spite of extensive literature on and research into this topic, the degree of scientific evidence of the effectiveness of probiotics is still insufficient in most cases. | 4 | Juvenile hominoid cranium from the terminal Miocene of Yunnan,China显示文摘Fossil apes are known from several late Miocene localities in Yunnan Province,southwestern China,principally from Shihuiba(Lufeng)and the Yuanmou Basin,and represent three species of Lufengpithecus.They mostly comprise large samples of isolated teeth,but there are also several partial or complete adult crania from Shihuiba and a single juvenile cranium from Yuanmou.Here we describe a new,relatively complete and largely undistorted juvenile cranium from the terminal Miocene locality of Shuitangba,also in Yunnan.It is only the second ape juvenile cranium recovered from the Miocene of Eurasia and it is provisionally assigned to the species present at Shihuiba,Lufengpithecus lufengensis.Lufengpithecus has most often been linked to the extant orangutan,Pongo pygmaeus,but recent studies of the crania from Shihuiba and Yuanmou have demonstrated that this is unlikely.The new cranium reinforces the view that Lufengpithecus represents a distinct,late surviving lineage of large apes in the late Miocene of East Asia that does not appear to be closely affiliated with any extant ape lineage.It substantially increases knowledge of cranial morphology in Lufengpithecus and demonstrates that species of this genus represent a morphologically diverse radiation of apes,which is consistent with the dynamic tectonic and biotic milieu of southwestern China in the late Miocene. | JI XuePing JABLONSKI Nina G SU Denise F DENG ChengLong FLYNN Lawrence J YOU YouShan KELLEY Jay | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013，58，31： | 8 |

combinations are proposed where necessary to improve our traditional species concepts and provide updates on their classification.In addition to extensive morphological descriptions and appropriate asexual and sexual connections,DNA sequence data are also analysed from concatenated datasets(rDNA,TEF-a,RBP2 and b-Tubulin)to infer phylogenetic relationships and substantiate systematic position of taxa within appropriate ranks.Wherever new species or combinations are being proposed,we apply an integrative approach(morphological and molecular data as well as ecological features wherever applicable).Notes on 125 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper,including eight new genera,101 new species,two new combinations,one neotype,four reference specimens,new host or distribution records | 9 | Mechanical Properties and Permeability of Mortar Modified with Metakaolin显示文摘This paper deals with the mechanical properties and permeability of mortar modified with Metakaolin. Comparisons were made to normal mortar without metakaolin in order to determine its influence of addition and replacement percentage. Cement was replaced on a mass basis of 5%~20% for metakaolin. The permeability determined by the electric flux and water absorption was investigated as well as mechanical properties. Technique of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the microstructure of the new mortar system. The experimental results obtained reveal that Metakaolin contributed to lower the water absorption rate and the electric flux and yield a good mechanical property. Moreover,there exists an optimal displacement percentage of metakaolin,15%,in the mortar system. SEM pictures illustrate that Metakaolin makes mortar more compacted. Fe3C formed on the surface of γ-Fe will stop the growth of carbon fiber if they cannot be reduced at once. | 13 | Neighboring optimal control for periodic tasks for systems with discontinuous dynamics显示文摘We propose a trajectory-based optimal control method for periodic tasks for systems with discontinuous dynamics. A general method, dynamic programming, suffers from the problem of dimensionality. We use local models of the optimal control law to construct a local controller. We combine a parametric trajectory optimization method and differential dynamic programming (DDP) to find the optimal periodic trajectory in a periodic task. By formulating the optimal control problem with an infinite time horizon, DDP generates time-invariant local models of the optimal control law. For DDP, the value function at dynamics discontinuities is approximated by a second order Taylor series. The utility of the proposed method is evaluated using simu- lated walking control of a five-link biped robot.
