| 2 | Temporal and Spatial Variations of Abundance of Phycocyaninand Phycoerythrin-Rich Synechococcus in Pearl River Estuary and Adjacent Coastal Area显示文摘Three surveys were carried out in Pearl River Estuary and adjacent coastal area in May, August, and November, 2013, to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of abundance of phycoerythrin-rich Synechococcus(PE-rich SYN) and phycocyanin-rich Synechococcus(PC-rich SYN). The effects of environmental factors on the alternation of the different Synechococcus groups were also elucidated. PE-rich SYN was detected in three surveys, whereas PC-rich SYN was detected in May and August, but not in November. The highest abundances of PE-rich SYN and PC-rich SYN were recorded in August and May, with mean values of 74.17×103 and 189.92×103 cells m L-1, respectively. From May to November, the relative abundance of PE-rich SYN increased, whereas that of PC-rich SYN declined. PE-rich and PC-rich SYN presented similar horizontal distributions with high abundance in the southern estuary in May, and in the western estuary in August. The abundances of PE-rich and PC-rich SYN were high at 27–32℃and salinity of 10–20. PC-rich SYN was not detected at < 24℃, and PC:PE-rich SYN decreased in abundance with salinity increase. When less than 20 mg L-1, suspended particulate matter(SPM) was helpful for Synechococcus growth. PE-rich SYN decreased in abundance when the concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen increased in May and November, and the concentration of phosphate increased in November. However, PC-rich SYN abundance and nutrients showed no correlation. | 3 | Who is the“murderer”of the bloom in coastal waters of Fujian,China,in 2019?显示文摘On May 24-29,2019,a bloom occurring in Pingtan coastal areas of Fujian Province caused mass mortality of cage-cultured fish(Plectorhinchus cinctus and Pagrosomus major).During the bloom,two major causative organisms were present:Prorocentrum donghaiense(at a concentration of 1.46×10^7 cells/L)and an unknown naked dinoflagellate(4.58×10^6 cells/L).The naked dinoflagellate was isolated and cultured in this study,and its morphological features were examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.The large subunit(LSU)of the rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer(ITS)region of the naked dinoflagellate were also sequenced for field bloom samples and lab culture strains(PT-A and PT-B).On the basis of its morphological characteristics and molecular sequences,the unknown naked dinoflagellate was identified as Karlodinium digitatum.According to the phylogenetic analysis,the Karl.digitatum was most closely related to Karlodinium australe and Karlodinium armiger,and the three species clustered into a single clade of Karlodinium with bootstrap/posterior probability values of 95%/0.99 and 86%/0.99 inferred from LSU and ITS sequences,respectively.Karl.digitatum was first reported as Karenia digitata,a new harmful algal species bloomed in Hong Kong,China,in 1998.In present study,we gave a detailed morphological and phylogenetic description of Karl.digitatum and submitted the molecular sequences of this species to GenBank for the first time. | CEN Jingyi WANG Jianyan HUANG Lifen DING Guangmao QI Yuzao CAO Rongbo CUI Lei Lü Songhui | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,3: | 5 |

| 5 | Spatio-temporal variations of harmful algal blooms along the coast of Guangdong,Southern China during 1980–2016显示文摘Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a recurring problem, posing severe impacts on marine ecosystems, fisheries, mariculture industry, and even public health. In this study, the geographic information system (GIS) was utilized to determine spatial and temporal characteristics of HAB events in the coastal waters of Guangdong from 1980–2016. We analyzed distribution patterns and characteristics of HABs by dividing the coast of Guangdong into well-known bays, estuary and coastal waters. Results showed that there were a total of 337 HABs recorded in Guangdong coastal waters. Spatial and temporal distributions varied among diff erent regions. Most HABs occurred in the Mirs Bay, followed by the west coast of Daya Bay, while a few occurred in the west and east coasts of Guangdong but with an increasing trend in the past two decades. HABs occurred mostly in warmer months of March to May in the western coast of Guangdong, March and April in Mirs Bay, April in Zhujiang (Pearl) River estuary, November in eastern coast of Guangdong. For Daya Bay, most HABs were reported between March and September. The most frequently occurring HABs species were Noctiluca scintillans , Phaeocystis globosa , Skeletonema costatum and Scrippsiella trochoidea , occurring mostly in Mirs Bay, western Guangdong coast area, eastern Guangdong coast area and Zhujiang River estuary and Daya Bay, respectively. Ichthyotoxic blooms were more common than toxic blooms, and Heterosigma akashiwo , Chattonella marina , Karenia mikimotoi and P haeocystis globosa were the most common ichthyotoxic species. | 7 | Seasonal variation of size-fractionated phytoplankton in the Pearl River estuary显示文摘To investigate the dynamics of phytoplankton size structure in the Pearl River estuary, concentrations of size-fractionated chlorophyll a (Chl a) were determined during four cruises carried out in 2008 and 2010. The distribution of Chl a in this geographical location showed a high degree of temporal variation. Chl a concentrations were highest in autumn, approximately three times higher than those in summer and winter. Microphytoplankton was the dominant contributor, accounting for 66.9% of the Chl a concentration in autumn 2008. In summer and spring 2008, nano-sized cells dominated the phytoplankton population throughout the study region. During the winter cruise, two different areas of water were found, characterized by (1) low salinity and high nutrient content and (2) high salinity and low nutrient content; nano- and picophytoplankton co-dominated the first area, while microphytoplankton dominated the second. It is arguable that grazing could have played a role in determining phytoplankton community size structure in winter. Nutrient concentrations were assumed not to limit phytoplankton growth during the investigation period. Size-differential capacity in competing for the resources available under different hydrodynamic conditions seemed to be the major factor in determining seasonal variation in the structure of the phytoplankton communities. High N:P ratios in the Pearl River estuary had major implications for nutrient pollution control. | 8 | Response of size-fractionated phytoplankton to environmental factors near the Changjiang Estuary显示文摘Size-based partitioning of phytoplankton is a useful tool for monitoring key phytoplankton traits, and it provides a better understanding of phytoplankton dynamics. Our aim is to determine the variation in the different size classes of phytoplankton to the total phytoplankton biomass during the spring and autumn of 2010 and examine the relationship between phytoplankton size structure and environmental variables and zooplankton community structure near the Changjiang Estuary. In the spring, phytoplankton populations were predominantly consisted of nanophytoplankton throughout the study region. In the autumn, picophytoplankton and nanophytoplankton collectively dominated the phytoplankton community. A Pearson correlation analysis highlighted the role of temperature and trophic conditions on the contributions of nanophytoplankton and picophytoplankton. | 14 | Effects of Ultraviolet(UV)Radiation on Outdoor-and Indoor-Cultured Prorocentrum lima,a Toxic Benthic Dinoflagellate显示文摘The effects of different types of ultraviolet(UV)radiation(UVR,wavelength=280-400 nm)and light intensities on cell growth,pigment composition,UV-absorbing compounds(UVACs),and chlorophyll a(Chl a)fluorescence were studied in dinoflag-ellate Prorocentrum lima cultured outdoors for 16 days and indoors for 18 days.In the outdoor experiment,UVA radiation(320-400 nm)increased the growth rate of this dinoflagellate when solar light intensities were<12%;decreased growth rates were observed when intensities were>12%.Exposure to UVB radiation(280-320 nm)alleviated the negative effects of UVA.In the indoor ex-periment,UVA and low doses of UVB enhanced growth rates.Addition of low doses of UVB to UVA exposure resulted in higher contents of Chl a and photoprotective pigments compared with UVA exposure only.The results of both experiments showed that UVB is the primary signal of UVAC synthesis.High-dose UVB exposure accelerated growth rates when UVAC contents were maintained at high levels,suggesting that the latter plays a key role in UVR damage protection.Furthermore,the repair rate was en-hanced by UVB exposure after 16 days of culture.This study confirms the positive effects of UVA and UVB on the growth of P.lima,with the latter enhancing the photoprotective and recovery pathways of the species. | CHEN Heng HUANG Kaixuan LIU Shasha LU Songhui | 2021 | Journal of Ocean University of China2021,20,3: | 1 |

| 19 | Characterization of Amphidinium(Amphidiniales,Dinophyceae)species from the China Sea based on morphological,molecular,and pigment data显示文摘Amphidinium species are amongst the most abundant benthic dinoflagellates in marine intertidal sandy ecosystems.Some of them are able to produce a variety of bioactive compounds that can have both harmful effects and pharmaceutical potentials.The diversity of Amphidinium in shallow waters along the Chinese coast was investigated by isolating single cells from sand,coral,and macroalgal samples collected from 2012 to 2020.Their morphologies were subjected to examination using light microscopy(LM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).A total of 74 Amphidinium strains were morphologically identified,belonging to 11 species:A.carterae,A.gibbosum,A.operculatum,A.massartii,A.cf.massartii,A.fijiensis,A.pseudomassartii,A.steinii,A.thermaeum,A.theodori,A.tomasii,as well as an undefined species.The last seven species have not been previously reported in Chinese waters.Amphidinium carterae subcladesⅠ,Ⅱ,andⅣwere found in the South China Sea,while subcladeⅢwas only found in the Yellow Sea.Threadlike body scales were observed on the surface of subcladesⅢ and Ⅳ,supporting the idea that A.carterae might contain several different species.Large subunit ribosomal RNA(LSU rRNA)sequencesbased phylogeny revealed two groups(GroupsⅠandⅡ)within Amphidinium,which is consistent with the relative position of sulcus(in touch with cingulum or not).In addition,large differences in morphology and molecular phylogeny between A.operculatum(the type species of Amphidinium)and other species,suggest that a subdivision of Amphidinium might be needed.The pigment profiles of all available strains were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Eleven pigments,including peridinin,diadinoxanthin,diatoxanthin,pheophorbide(and pheophorbide a),antheraxanthin,β-carotene,and four different chlorophylls were detected.The high pheophorbide/pheophorbide a ratio in Amphidinium implies that it may be a good candidate as a natural source of photosensitizers,a well-known anticancer drug. | Zhaohe LUO Hua ZHANG Qun LI Lei WANG Hala F MOHAMED Songhui LÜ Haifeng GU | 2022 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,3: | 1 |
